100% agree. The guy rarely dies on any particular hill...and generally always prefaces his comments with "I have been told" OR "I have no information on this..." before launching into a subject.

There are certianly a lot of problems at LFL, even if it only comes down to indecisiveness, but we really don’t know whether this was him disagreeing with the direction/notes or, as he suggests, he simply didn’t think the was creating something at a high enough standard and didn’t want to ‘stand in the way’ as it were.

Well yes, it's obviously speculation... but writers of Lindelof's profile tend not to commit themselves to projects they believe they cannot achieve. I mean, he's not going to ever state that he believes he isn't talented or clever enough to write a SW movie (no matter what we may think)... otherwise he wouldn't be in the business... so reading between the lines, his comments seem like code for the old perennial i.e. 'creative differences'. I suspect we'll find out soon enough.

What's even more egregious is to think that ESB is not a Lucas movie in heart and soul, and because someone else directed it it turned out extremely different or something. When everything that is amazing about the movie is the story and not the direction. But to each their own for sure.

Yes. TESB is very much George Lucas... it's his creative vision... although that isn't to downplay the importance of of collaboration, and how important that collaboration was/is in elevating the material. There wouldn't be a single great film without the creative collaboration underpinning them.

Excactly. Collaboration. The perfect triangle of Lucas, Kasdan and Kershner i say. Regarding ESB i would also give the great Peter Suschitzky a big applaud. You can tell the lightning work in ESB is amazing. John Williams score ( probably his best of all SW ones) underlines the change of mood in this story with such incredible depth and fully understanding the melodrama and war aspects of this film. Kershners direction is full of nuances, which you can see especially with the way he is pacing the film + his work on the actors. Mark Hamills performance in particular. So of course ESB is Lucas true vision, but executed by people who clearly was up to the task as well.

To be clear I wasn’t trying to minimize Lucas’s role in the success of ESB. He obviously was a huge part of why it’s such a great film. But to say he ghost directed it is just inaccurate and minimizes the great Irvin Kershner’s role in it. He also was a huge part of why it is one of the best films ever made.

I’m pretty sure he says “I ended up directing the movie anyway…just like the last one” or something like that.

TESB in no way shape or form resembles a GL directed film. In no way. Kershner was an accomplished veteran with an envious career waaaaaaay before he took on SW.

And also a fellow Temple alum.

I insist on seizing every opportunity to claim him or else I'm left with Bill Cosby and Ted Bundy.

You have blasphemed against our lord and saviour George Lucas.

Your penance is to walk across a field of LEGO Star Wars until raw and listen to Anakin and Padme love dialogue until the edge of madness. Only then will you be forgiven your sins.

KK’s m.o. is to get rid of the younger talent and replace them with an older Hollywood veteran. See Gareth Edwards and Tony Gilroy, Lord and Miller replaced with Ron Howard, etc.

As long as the movie gets made, at this point, my mom could write it and I wouldn’t care. And for the record, my mom is still a little confused over whether little Anakin is little Luke, which is frustrating due to the efforts I contributed to burning out our VHS tape| of The Phantom Menace and the OT.

Eastern Promises and Peaky Blinders are legitimately great. He gets my vote of confidence just off the strength of those two projects.

I believe, although I could be wrong, he was also writing a Man of Steel sequel before the old DC universe went belly up.

Was about to say the same thing. Eastern Promises and Peaky Blinders are both great. Not sure that many have watched the «Princess Diana biopic» Spencer with Kristen Stewart ( Wright did the script). Its a really creepy take on that topic, with the British Royals almost acting like characters from a horror film, and the whole film taking place on the Queens Sandringham Castle - claustrophobic and weird. Whole film is like a metaphore for being in a royal prison, and exposing Dianas mental health state. Its good. Not for everyone i guess.

Well, at least this confirms this film is alive! Yippeee!

He certainly seems like a competent choice.

I am a little worried about the lack of big budget narrative films from the director, but I’m sure she’ll be given good guidance.

Fingers crossed this is a good first film out of the gate.

The Variety article says more information about the movie + possibly the title of the film will be announced at Celebration in London. Though Lucasfilm has not confirmed it.

Edit: Did not get to edit my earlier post. Its Steven Knight. Not Wright.

You’re right. WBD rejected his script if I remember correctly.

Probably was a good Superman script then.

Don't threaten me with a good time. That's just great dialogue there.
Definitely better than "I know" as a response to "I love you".
A line that has shaped the personality of fragile men with tiny egos since 1980.
