I mean, it clearly is, even if they don't call it that.

They could always add the Episode X retroactively, just like George.

announcing a film isn't an actual film.

As I said in the Rey movie thread, maybe this narratively leads to a new EP10-12 trilogy.

I think standalone films that expand the story are better than having another X through XII trilogy but I also have no problem with the new Rey / Jedi Order movie having a title crawl; I think it would be great actually.

I say this because I think the ST might have been better received if it wasn't called the ST and didn't have VII, VIII, and IX attached to the titles. I know that's silly to some but it was part sequel story and part epilogue IMO.

Kinda like The Godfather Part III.

I think that's exactly right... It's possible that this film is going to be used as a bit of a palete cleanser to something that stands completely separate.

I wonder if they'll drop the numbers and just use multiple layers of titles: STAR WARS: Rey's Saga: The Jedi Academy: Freshman Year: The Force Nerds.

Call me an old dude, but the only way I would be really excited for this is if they brought Luke back, like Gandalf came back in Lord of the Rings. I feel like they need to make up for the mistakes they made for what they did to his character. I highly doubt they will, but I think they could. And it would follow the progression of the Jedi learning these things… Qui-Gon was the first Jedi to bring back his physical form after death. Perhaps Luke was the first to force project his body. … A physical reincarnation would be the next step. I can dream ok?

I joke around a lot about this because I like to get on my fellow mods and ex-mods nerves but in all seriousness this is how I look at Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film. First of all it’s a film not a series, it’s going to have an opening crawl, it’s set a significant amount of time after Episode IX, you’re dealing directly with some of the most important events in the Saga with the fall of the Jedi and Republic and you’re featuring at least one of the main characters from the previous trilogy. I’m sorry but you’re Episode X.

They should skip to Episode XIII for full nostalgia effect.

I always thought they coulda blown everyone’s minds in the theatre in 2015 by putting Episode 10 in the crawl

And it's very possible you will be right. I'm really hoping that they do something with this that's different enough for it to feel like it's own story, and not Episode X. But, I'm not sure they can pull it off. It really might be Episode X in all but name. I have my doubts they will call it that, because I think they won't want to own up to it. Buy, yes, it'll walk like a duck, and swim like a duck, and quack like a duck....

I too hope they just own up to it. I don’t want an Episode X in all but name. Just call it what it is.

Yeah I think if they're serious about going big for the first new SW film in a while, then branding it Episode X is probably the biggest they could go. What a statement that would be.

Agreed. Just call it Star Wars: The Next Generation, and stop pretending it’s not that.

Indeed. Their loophole is calling the episode films the Skywalker saga. But the story will expand from there, as we are seeing already.

Look at it this way: If SOLO had been a monster hit they would probably have gone ahead with the Kenobi trilogy, which would have sort of felt like (and kind of been in a way) Episodes IV-VI of the Saga but still not have been regarded as that officially.
It's the same with this Rey movie. It is a continuation of her story and for that reason, it would make sense to call it Episode X, but at the same time, I'm guessing it'll have a somewhat different vibe and focus, as OWK does. It could still be called Episode X, but I think it'll also make sense not to call it that because it'll feel different from the Skywalker Saga.

They're essentially doing what they did in the EU days when they expanded the stories of the Saga characters in book/comic/video game form, only now they're doing it in movie form as well. This is basically just a new novel about Rey's next adventure that takes place after/in between the Saga trilogies where the greater events in the history of Skywalkers and the galaxy take place.

The next movies will undo the ST. They will start with episode IX - The Fall of Palpatine followed by VIII - Jedi Resurrection and end with VII - The force goes to sleep.

This would be my dream scenario for the franchise:

Saga I: Dawn of the Jedi

This would cover the span of time from the Prime Jedi and the founding of the Republic to the emergence of the first Sith.

    Saga II: The Force Wars

This would cover the time period from the Sith overthrowing the Old Republic to their eventual defeat by the Jedi and the establishment of the Rule of Two.

    Saga III: The Chosen One

This is the Skywalker Saga obviously.

Saga IV: The New Jedi Order

This would be set a few thousand years after the Skywalker Saga. Enough time for the Jedi Order to be restored to full strength. It would show the waning years of the Galactic Republic. By the end it would cease to exist but the galaxy would become a more diverse collection of different governments. The Jedi would be like the United Nations. They would be purely peace keepers with no allegiance to any one government.

Each Saga would be split into trilogies and each would start with Episode I. Together they would form The Journal of the Whills.
