That's not new, though. Raiders had the headpiece and staff of Ra. Crusade had the two shield markers. Kingdom had the grave search and multiple skulls. Finding the map to the final MacGuffin, and having the map be in multiple pieces is pretty standard. Only Temple had Indy thrown right into finding the stones.

I actually do like the villain being an Operation Paperclip Nazi, I think it works really well given the time period the movie is set in.

As for the CIA and stuff, I thought it was pretty clear that it was mostly the government letting Voller have his little pet project to keep him happy while he’s building rockets.
Obviously they didn’t know his plan and never would have allowed him to change history so the Nazis won the war, so Vollers betrayal was always inevitable once he felt the dial was in his reach.

The CGI wizards, just like the majority of human anatomists, still have difficulty understanding how mouth muscles work. It’s the final frontier of deepfaking.

My problem was it was definitely an 80 year old larynx, not a 45 year old larynx. Stood out every time he had a line.

    this trajectory is bad

That’s the problem I had with The Irishman. Despite being a big fan of Scorcese’s, that problem meant I couldn’t watch large stretches of the film. Young De Niro, walking stiffly like old De Niro, made him come across as some kind of Frankenstein figure. And I couldn’t look past it. My brain is too visually-oriented to look past it.

Better than a monotone, synthesized voice like Luke had in BOBF. Tweaking the existing performer's voice still allowed personality and emotion to come through. Not perfect, perhaps, but it really does pass in the moment. And you can justify it as Indy's voice having gotten deeper in the 6 years since the events of Last Crusade. All that adventurin', blood-drinking, poison-swallowing, war fightin', smokey room and smokey tomb inhalation, combined with probably getting punched a few too many times taking a toll ;).

Sry no, despite AI being an even worse angle to take, he still sounded like an 80 year old man.

the non-bad angle would be to recast, but we’re obvs way beyond that at this point.

Also he’s swinging from a rope on his neck at the start of the movie.

His first few lines are delivered when he’s calmly sitting on a chair. They’re the least convincing.

The only thing that took me out of the moment a bit was, not the deaging CGI but rather seeing how much strength and stamina this 80 year old man still has. Sure he's not moving like he did in his prime but my dad is Ford's age and is generally in good health and physical shape but he'd probably fall over from a heart attack if exerted himself as much as Ford did in Dial! It's a movie so I'll allow it but I did find it amusing to see how spry he is.

Well, that’s why he’s called Indiana Jones and not the Regular Mustache’s Dad. ;)

Indy is 70 in the movie. Ford is playing ten years younger.

Not to keep beating a dead horse but it is kinda wild that Indy got the best ending possible to his story with The Last Crusade and then they turned around and made two more movies. It really gives one the feeling that LFL just wanted to milk the franchise for more money even though the story ended in The Last Crusade.

I have to imagine they're going to reboot this series at some point, right? If so, will it be set in the 1930's and 40's or are they going to bring it into the modern era?

I assume they'll reboot at some point sure, but I'd love to see alternates. Indy does not have the market cornered for the Cliffhanger genre. Even though Chris Pratt was talked about, they could just use him for some other character. A Tales of the Gold Monkey update might work quite well with him.

EDIT: Mangold has some thoughts to share

What story? They’re all one off action and adventure movies with very little character development. It’s about the set pieces, not the pieces connecting the different movies.

c'mon , the Raiders movies have actually memorable stories. Look at these Transformers and Fast movies - they have no stories anyone can remember.

Um, yes they do. They're both stories about cars and trucks.

Transformers has got some interesting lore & stories, unfortunately the people making the movies aren't very interested in that

Good point. This is also why the Fast and Furious and Olive Garden crossover dinner theater experience makes so much sense.

again, what story? There’s a prologue, then he tracks down an artifact for whatever reason and finds a new love interest or sidekick that helps him accomplish his goal. The story is a vessel to deliver compelling setpieces. Does anyone watch Indy for some compelling plot twist or thematic message?

I was trying to think of a good response to this because there is none (seriously I've seen things that make Indy look like an angel), but this sums it up:

Crusade is the only Indy film that I think has a compelling story. The treasure hunting was a device to bring Indy and his father together. The real treasure was the family they found along the way, or something like that.

We saw the movie again earlier before going for a hike at Skinner Butte.
I think that Ford's best acting moments where when he described his son's death and his quandary with Marion on the boat, as well as his interactions with Helena and Archimedes in the past. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was also great in the movie. I liked how Jones' story about his family struggles helped make her feel bad for him. One thing is that I missed was that Teddy showed an interest in flying in the Tangier hotel where Helena was attempting to auction the dial. Good foreshadowing. I also liked Voller's line, "See you in the past, Dr. Jones." He was being humorous and serious at once. I love that Boyd Holbrook is portraying a fully biological version of a similar character he portrayed in Logan. He makes a dangerous henchman. Overall, a very fun movie.
