@Jedi Bluth Been doing that for awhile now both at school and work. It really bothered me at first but now I gotten to the point I make them just to annoying them a bit. If they see me as an old fart, then I will make old fart references and have fun. Meanwhile the two oldest surprised me earlier this week and brought their "non girlfriends" girlfriends to go see Spiderverse 2 this past week. They just finished sixth grade a week ago. Thought this started later in life but apparently it doesn't anymore. Odd thing was I still went with as I told them I could drop them and pick them off but they said "no it's cool". I did pay for everyone's ticket so maybe that is part of it but everyone got their own snacks/drinks but they all shared so that help with costs. I also paid for pizza later that night so maybe they were maybe just using the Old Man for his wallet in front of the girls. Really don't know what to make any of it. Not surprised that one of them is hanging out with a girl he likes since he is a little Renaissance man who does a bit of everything including poetry. But the other one? Complete and utter jock who if you threw a ball down a long sidewalk he chased it forever. Both of them are athletic and into sports I should say but one of them is just a complete and utter jock. So naturally he is seeing the basketball star who is the neighbor right behind us. I knew something was up because late on Memorial Day Weekend he wasn't home late and I went outside for something and saw him coming thru our back sliding door all flustered and blushing. Apparently they were snuggling in the dark on our fence line since they have a dog. Again not only do feel old I don't know what to make of it.
@Luke02 , sounds to me like you're raising normal kids. These days, that's a big win. Congratulations.
@Sarge Thanks *knock on wood* they are great kids so that is most important and hopefully stays that way. We did have a lengthy discussion about a few things including not to leave their buddies in the dust in order to hang out with their lady friends and so far they seem to have a good balance of it. Helps too they are all going on vacation at some point this summer so they will have time apart that way though the neighbors kid asked me (very respectfully) if she and my son could screen chat some while we are on vacation and said she will make sure they won't when we are busy. Thought was very mature and made me wonder why she is interested in my son who will just chase a ball around all day/everyday lol. My wife did make a good point that girls mature faster then boys so it makes sense she would be thinking like that instead of him who just wondering if there is a game on or can he go down to the local rec and play pick up basketball or pick up anything while he isn't playing in one league or another. Again though the whole made me feel old especially since I didn't think they be like seeing/hanging out with someone they like at such a young age as they will be just going into seven grade. Like I had a classmate I really like at that age (who still know to this day and finds it funny especially she still doesn't believe me that half our class thought the same way) but no way would I done anything about it as nobody really dated or anything like that. But my wife says it just seems to start younger now and isn't surprised they are already seeing people they like despite only being 12. Perhaps I was just kidding myself and think I wouldn't have to be dealing with this until I was older. @christophero30 A colleague of mine didn't get a Napoleon Dynamite reference I made the last week of school. Then I remember she is 24 and that movie came out when she was four though I'm surprised she didn't see it sometime growing up on home video. But if she doesn't know Napoleon Dynamite she also be completely clueless on who Farrah Fawcett is. Ditto my students who don't get either reference especially I tried with Napoleon Dynamite a bunch last year and just got blank stares. Again I gotten to the point I'm sometimes just entertaining myself in class and perfectly fine with it. @darth_gersh I hear you my oldest nephew technically graduates from college next year though is doing a 5th year to get his masters since they are giving a lot of financial aid for it. Also in two short years, I will be driving the twins to school with me. Again going to feel really old the day we all walk into school together and yes they will be driving to school with me since the way the bus schedule goes they would have to get up earlier to go on that instead of just hitch a ride with me so they already said they rather sleep in and deal with the embarrassment of walking in with me. I park in the back of the building so one told me that helps because a lot less kids go thru that door as it's mainly for staff. Gee thanks kid lol
When you see a sign on a place that says "Since 1987" or some such and think "Ha, that's nothing!" and then realize it's 36 years which, for a business, definitely ain't nothing.
For the past few months I've been dealing with anemia. Back in M arch was in hospital for 4 days and got 4 blood transfusions in order to get my blood-iron levels back to at least passing marks. Some days I'm totally fine. Others (like today) are a complete slog. No energy. Tired from going up stairs. Taking care of an 18 mo old and a 4 year old is the toughest. Can't really play with them on bad days. Makes me feel very old. Too old. Got a surgery slated for end of summer that will hopefully rectify some of this. Until...ugh.
@SHAD0W-JEDI Yeah my best friend and I were talking about something like that. If somehow they remade BTOF next year (and I will unleash holy terror if they do but luckily it isn't going to happen) and came out in 2025, Marty would go back to November 5th......1995. I was a senior in HS therefore he would be visiting my senior class from high school since George, Loraine, Biff etc were supposed to be seniors in HS, at least that is what I always assume.
I’ve been struggling with it for around a year too. Hang in! I’ve been getting infusions of venofer, and it’s working well to get my ferritin levels up.
I have a friend who was teaching a music engineering class and his students didn't know who Kurt Cobain was...and this happened ten plus years ago!!!
Hang on one second. Disney's Peter Pan came out in 1953. My age proximity to it is not that far from @Jedi Bluth's. How can he not know who Mr. Smee is?
Cause I've only seen once when I was young; so I don't remember it so well. @The Regular Mustache Not knowing who Kurt Cobain is, is unforgivable.
When you see a JCC thread about The Rocky Horror Show being 50, and you realize it came out after you were born.
I knew on Sunday when I was singing to the music of my mums 80th birthday and my daughter was frowning at me.....it was Neil Diamond............where's my walking frame?
Relatedly: I recently watched the Netflix series Maid (very good show BTW!) about a single mother and her 3-year-old daughter. One of the things the toddler daughter liked was for her mom to play "Shoop" by Salt-N-Pepa in the car. I thought it slightly odd since this would've been way before the toddler's time. But then I looked closely at the mother, figured she couldn't have been born any earlier than the mid-'90s, and realized that song came out before even she was born. Whereas I clearly remember when the song was released and watched it on MTV all the time back in middle school.
