I suspect we will, but like C-3PO in Ahsoka, I expect he'll just pop up unannounced as a surprise. If he doesn't make an appearance, I feel like he'll definitely at least be name dropped.

The most interesting (in the sense that it has the most potential) line in the trailer is "this is about power, and who is allowed to use it." It reminded me of a lengthy essay from waaaaaay back when (from when the world was still young--I think when either TPM or AOTC was released), can't be arsed to google it. The author suggested that the reason why the Jedi are institutionalized is to maintain the public trust. People with such abilities, he argued, might have a history of having been persecuted, so the Jedi institutionalized themselves to serve the public good and to have a strict code of conduct. I've always thought it'd be interesting if some EU material were to explore something like that idea.

Another thing: If we're going to Kashyyyk, I wonder if we're going to see young Chewbacca, or young Tarfful.

Yoda will definitely have a cameo, probably in the first set of episode drops. The potential social media buzz will be irresistible to LFL marketing, Baby Yoda 2.0

    Per the interview on StarWars.com

Leslye Headland decided to include some big EU lore ideas that come into play early on in the series and later in the series. I wonder what they are.

I am curious if they will touch upon Plagueis or Tenebrous. It's 100 years before TPM and that's plenty of time to set this before Plagueis or even Tenebrous (assuming he's still canonically Plagueis' master). Assuming the Sith maser is the one catching the red lightsaber, the hand just looks like a human (or near human) hand. Or with some aliens having lifespans going into the 100+ year range there's always the potential for Plagueis or Tenebrous to pop up. That seems like it would just come down to whether Leslye had any use for or interest in those characters.

But IMO, it's unfortunate that both characters are of goofy looking species that I'm not sure I could take seriously on screen.

I think she will use them but might save them for later. Maybe we only see one sith lord now and mentions he has a master.

Lesley Headland mentions the importance of recruiting non Star Wars fans to give fresh new ideas and such and thats good. Similar to how Andor had.

Somehow, some Jedi did not return!

    Some stakes at last?

I'm excited to see some more live action SW again. I also like the diversity of the cast.

The murder mystery plot is different and intriguing. Looks like some interesting world-building too.

Is this a teaser trailer? Can't expect a lot of character depth to come through if so, but I hope it eventually does in the full cut. Also, the soundtrack doesn't quite evoke the SW magic for me - again might just be because of the shortness/action-centredness of this trailer. There's still some CGI polishing to do by the looks of things also.

If the episodes are shorter, it'll still be 4h to 4h30 long (or so), which is long enough to tell a good story...

And if that's the case I think that could certainly make for some really compelling Star Wars and television in general. We all love the Dark Knight for the Joker......but we all can agree he was a psychopath.

Of all of the projects that were announced years back and wholly unique with minimal ties to protagonists we know, the Acolyte was probably the one I was most intrigued with conceptually.

This trailer only strengthens that anticipation but one aspect that puzzled me initially and still does is that the main antagonist feels fairly insignificant within Star Wars lore from what I can tell. Why?

Why not make this main villain someone with clear ties to the Sith in a big way? That’s what I don’t understand about this project and when I try to explain to casual fans of Star Wars at my work about why this series will be interesting I keep realizing how much easier it would be to pitch to people if I could even say something as easy as “It’s about the rise of the Sith and eventually Palpatine’s master” but the truth is I don’t even know if this villain is Sith.

The trailer made me think more that this villain is going to end up having the big picture significance of a Moff Gideon or Baylan Skoll at most. Which isn’t a lot. Menacing in their timeline but eventually defeated and without any significant tie to any of the most interesting lore moments and details I love. This will be particularly true if this villain isn’t even a Sith but instead is just some random user of the dark side.

Actually, I’ll go further. It may end up feeling like a wasted narrative opportunity if this villain has no actual tie to the Sith rise later on because then it will be less likely and perhaps less interesting to try and tell that tale later.

I’m of the opinion that if you tell the story of the Jedi at their peak being beaten by the rise of the dark side it basically must be Sith-involved or else you ruin those same story beats from
being used to tell that tale later.

Like imagine how much more interesting this all would be if we somehow knew this story tied into Plagueis even? Why wouldn’t they want to go there? That’s what I don’t get. It’s like they’re constantly afraid of huge lore stakes and constantly reserving the right to tell those stories later at some undisclosed time period all the time.

Further to my point is the fact that we know that there is a continual line of Sith occurring below rhe Jedi’s radar for generations. It’s not like Sidious was the first. And it’s because we know that’s occurring that it feels immediately anticlimactic to be exploring any other dark side user’s tale during the peak of the Jedi. Put simply, if you don’t tie it back to the Sith line of succession in some way it feels like a huge missed opportunity to me because nothing else any other dark side faction does and nothing else any other random dark side user does matters as much as the Sith later on.

The timeline to explore random dark side users without affiliation to the Sith is the future timelines. Not the past. The story to tell about evil rising behind the scenes at the peak of the Jedi’s powers needs to be the Sith’s or it ruins that story potential for the Sith later on.

I can only hope I’m not the only person who felt this way during the production process.

It’s one thing set a goal to tell original stories and be less reliant on the Skywalker saga but the minute you start telling stories about the Jedi at the or peak you’re inviting the question “But what about the Sith?” Because to a lot of people no other antagonistic force matters later on the way the Sith do.

The sizable contingent of fans who are mad about Disney making choices that frustrate them about characters they love has mostly campaigned for Disney to stay away from legacy heroes. Not whole factions. Not previous Sith who have never been seen in live action before.

Leslye has more-or-less said that this will come into play.

From her interview with Hollywood Reporter:

Whether any established Sith like Plagueis will appear is unknown, but she definitely alludes to this show establishing what starts to go wrong for the Jedi that ultimately leads to Palpatine’s rise 100 years later.

Trailer was …fine. Nothing especially egregious or annoying about any of the footage, but there’s also not a lot that’s necessarily catching my interest or making me truly excited.

Still, I’ll watch the show when it airs and if nothing else the visualisation of the post-HR/pre-Prequel era will be interesting to see.

The trailer was very cool. Absolutely love Carrie-Ann Moss in this role. Lee Jung-jae also looks great.

What attracted me most so far about the imagery though is how it feels like SW but also just different enough to feel like a truly different era.

The story also feels like it will be bold and dark, giving us a different look at the familiar.

Very very excited for this. This is the show I've been waiting for.

See, I read that same interview earlier today and didn’t feel the same as you after reading it. To me, it just made it sound like this show will show us the cracks in the Jedi Order that allow darkness to rise but there’s absolutely no reason to not name drop the Sith if you’re truly exploring them on some level when you’re openly talking about the Jedi at their peak and dark side adversaries but she has not mentioned the Sith in relation to this show to best of my knowledge.

In other words the forces of antagonism here may fully separate and serve no other purpose than to show how the Jedi have serious issues as an organization. This Acolyte could end up being no more to the Sith than what Moff Gideon ultimately is to the formations of the First Order and the sequel trilogy. Which, in the end, wasn’t a whole lot. His clone tech didn’t lead directly to Palpatine’s return or even the creation of Snoke. His leadership didn’t directly lead to the beginnings of the First Order. He just had very loose ties to what all of that ultimately becomes later on. He requested the use of the Praetorian Guard. He was doing clone tech for himself only himself. And then he died and no longer matters within the larger saga story. I’m just getting a bit tired of inconsequential villains who don’t tie back into major lore events. Save that stuff for the future stories where lore is not yet written but when we know where things go I think most stories set as prequels to things need to actually deliver significant story details and reveals to what we know and love later on.

The equivalent of that in this show would be like the very end of the entire saga we saw the outline of someone on a throne (Darth Tenebrous?) being updated that this one single rogue dark sider was able to sneak into the Jedi organization and do a lot of damage with him then saying something along the lines of “If one lone wolf can do all that just imagine what the Sith can accomplish.”

Which I strongly suspect they wouldn’t even do anyway since that’s pure Marvel and there’s been no embracing of that kind of tone yet.

I just find it weird. You’ve got this great hook of the rise of the dark side at the peak of the Jedi’s rule and as casual fans ask “Oh, it’s the story about how the Sith rose up in the shadows?” You have to say “No. it’s the story of an Acolyte of the Dark Side! No direct affiliation! It’s different! But we will see the cracks in the institution of the Jedi forming and no that later on the Sith do exploit those crack also!” Feels inefficient for no other reason than a fear of connecting to established lore and/or a desire for creative freedom from 1 of the 2 best known force using organizations in Star Wars but for not both. Why?

I fully expect a Sith to be named in the series.

What gets less certain is whether it will be an all new Sith.

With the Plagueis novel now being Legends, it’s unknown how much of that, if any will work its way back into canon. Plagueis is Palpatine’s master, but was he alive 100 years before TPM? Tenebrous is “canon” or at least the name is. But is he a Bith? Is he still master to Plagueis?

If Leslye wanted to redesign Tenebrous into a human, would she get any pushback? If she wants to establish that Plagueis’ master was a different Darth and not Tenebrous, would anyone tell her “no?” If it was decided that they wanted to include Darth Plagueis but didn’t want to have to have a fully animated Muun would LucasFilm have been flexible enough to retcon him as a species that worked better with practical effects and makeup?

Or maybe Tenebrous became a Sith apprentice 50 years before TPM and Leslye wanted to tell a story further back so she could use her own characters?

There’s a lot of possibilities and it’s too soon to say.

But whomever the Sith is. I feel like we’ll be given a name.

My concern remains no Sith tie at all. Your problems are problems I would welcome.
