Some folks running around thinking Legends was universally loved and forgetting that a lot of us were very discontent with the post-NJO. After Invincible I took a break because I hated the way that story ended. Hated it. Then I let myself get suckered into FOTJ, which ended up being even more of what I hated in LOTF.
Reading through it all for myself for the first time, I know pieces of the post-Dark Empire EU, but not details. But I generally have enjoyed all Star Wars, so...
Are a lot of the people with that opinion those that liked the post NJO? When those people that were fighting to get the legends continuity going again were still active I noticed a lot of them seemed to really like the last few series of the continuity (either that or they were just trying to be as positive towards legends as possible).
I have a few DE/Legends continuity and lore questions. Are the "Dark Jedi" in DE2/3 given any other titles? Like, acolytes or Inquisitors? Do we know what Rogue and Wraith Squadron were up to? What about Mara and Kyle? I have two OneCanon questions as well: What would Mas Amedda have been up to? Would he have been on Byss? Or setting-up shop on Coruscant? And why would Palpatine not go to Exegol now? What prevents him from retreating there and trying later *before* he is defeated again?
The Dark Jedi we saw were known as the Dark Side Elite. The head of them took the title Executor. The Rogues were expanded to a hundred fighters of various types aboard the Lusankya. The Wraiths are in the shadows. I assume the Rogues and Wraiths were among the fighters at Onderon. Kyle and Mara remain off-screen protecting the Jedi Holocron as per Mysteries of the Sith. Mas Amedda withdrew to Byss after Endor, according to late Legends, and then was deployed to Coruscant when Palpatine’s Dark Empire was revealed. It’s why he avoided dying at Byss. The Sith armada at Exegol needed decades more to complete, meanwhile the Dark Empire was only years off. His cloning centre was there, and to be fair Byss is more central than Exegol. The Dark Empire is a perfect middle ground between the Galactic Empire and Sith Empire, after all. Technologically, too, the Death Star shrunk down to the Eclipse-class to the Xyston works, in terms of the superlasers being miniaturised. Exegol potentially was comprised by Vader, too…
So... Did anyone noticed the kriffing amazing new statue from Hot Toys? https://www.sideshow.com/collectibles/star-wars-luke-skywalker-dark-empire-hot-toys-913364 We now only a need DE Sheev, with the Dracula collar and all. Sent from my LYA-L29 using Tapatalk
Rise of Skywalker is more important for the Disney Universe than Dark Empire is for the EU Dark Empire in the EU and the resurrection of Palpatine is a filler story the only important thing that happens in Dark Empire is the birth of Anakin Solo Luke becoming a Jedi Master and Kam Solusar joining Luke while most of the content in the Disney Canon is trying to explain Palpatine resurrection
Which is the issue of having different companies publishing things with less central control. That being said Crimson Empire is a positively brilliant tie between Dark Empire and NJO - even if it wasn’t intentional. With Legends you can definitely see a thread running through Rogue Planet, Outbound Flight, the Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire, Crimson Empire, JAT, Hand of Thrawn and the NJO and Legacy. It’s nice. Of course Canon has the two Thrawn Trilogies, Rebels, Aftermath Trilogy, Mandoverse, Shadows of the Sith and Bloodline/Rise of Kylo Ren for essential works. But the thread tapers off at the ST and that does some harm I feel. But it’s also a work in process. Legends was doing more with Dark Empire towards the end.
Thrawn Trilogy was more important for the EU but you need to read Dark Empire to see how Anakin Solo is born and how Luke becomes a Jedi Master but i think you can skip Dark Empire unlike Thrawn Trilogy
Interesting I think the reverse. TTT is a filler arc that introduces some charaters, but DE is about Luke becoming a full jedi master and deciding to rebuild the jedi (leia also gets a great arc about coming into her own power), which leads directly into Jedi Academy Trilogy which is THE pivotal story of the post RotJ EU.
Thrawn Trilogy is more important for the Post ROTJ EU due to the introduction of Mara Jade Talon Karrde Jacen and Jaina Palpatine return in the EU is just another Villain for the New Republic
Talon and mara are just side characters, until Mara marries Luke just before NJO, while Talon is just a minor character, Booster could replace him. Jacen and Jaina are babies in the story. Palpatine leads to character arcs and growth for Luke and Leia, something TTT lacks. DE is focused on the ot3 with some side characters. It is very much a story about Luke, Leia and Han, Lando.
Dark Empire created Nar Shaddaa, is the primary reason why Boba is back from the sarlacc for good, served as a turning point in the meta narrative of the Bantam Era where all warlords were reduced to some squabbling deep core warlords and a pathetic rump state, led directly to Luke finally creating the Jedi academy with help from Vodo-Baas's holocron, Emphasized and set in stone how pathetically unstable the Empire was without palpatines guiding hand with constant fragmentation (a theme that defined the empire for much of Legends while say TTT depicts it as a stable monolith with thrawn never dealing with any rival warlords) Dismissing it as irrelevant feels petty at best.
Actually thinking about it some more, pretty sure Dark Empire is the first time the Hutts were depicted as a polity worthy of respect even by the Rebellion, rather than Jabba just being one guy. Zorba in comparison is just some guy doing mild petty nonsense. With Dark Empire who knows if we would even have the Hutt Clans as a concept.
I imagine he makes it all the way to TROS, or there abouts. Depends if you believe he was Darth Wyyrlok I or not.
I like to think he was. Would lay the ground work for the Sith working with the Empire also gives Palpatine a Legacy in the Legacy Comics.
