Amph The Disney/Pixar Movies Thread (for anything non-Marvel/SW)

Watched Wish for the first time as it released on Disney+ this past Wednesday.

Opening: convoluted and confusing.

After the movie was over, I re-watched just the opening sequence, essentially where they’re setting up the movie and telling you about the sorcerer and what he can do.

The problem is we never learn the why. He hints that people have been hurt before so he preventing hurt but we never get any other specifics - just a random shot of a torn banner. This premise for a villain is very weak and it seems they kept it intentionally vague so the audience doesn’t humanize or side with the villain.

Music - forgettable
Characters - unenjoyable

This movie just felt like an Easter egg hunt as the call backs to previous Disney movies is insultingly obvious.

Was Star even needed as a character? His power was to be able to make things talk. He had no other power.

It seems like Asha figured out the right thing to do on her own and then the Sorcerer figured out that he could absorb wishes and gain power from a book he happened to have.

I can see why this movie flopped. One cannot rely solely on a nostalgia trip. You actually need to write a solid story and their final product was not it.

So Timon and Pumba are in this prequel film (both of their VA are featured)? They're both as old as Mufasa is?

 

No James Earl Jones in the credits? Original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda? Same animation with no ability to emote?
This is a "wait for D+ streaming" for sure.

I'm guessing Simba and Nala will be telling their daughter Kiara the story of Mufasa.

 

The important thing is we are getting the origin of Scar’s scar. I bet he got it while he was Solo.

 

More expressionless CGI animals, doesn't appeal particularly.

But given the previous movie made $1.5billion I expect this will do well.

 

I am once again begging Disney to remember they’re allowed to stylize their talking cartoon animals.

Either that or just go all the way and do a photorealistic version of A Bugs Life.

If they plan on doing My Lullaby the way they did Be Prepared I don’t want them anywhere near it.

 

Well…I hope Barry Jenkins bought something nice with that paycheck.

 

You joke, but that could be absolutely adorable. The more realistic, loose-all-cartooniness, the better. Insects can pull it off. Mammals not so much.

 

I am a bit offended. The Lion King was the greatest treatise in favor of the divine right of kings since King James I put pen to paper. Now they are inserting random stuff into the trailer about being non-royal? Why are we retconning?

 

It's the circle of life.

 

You think the trailer is bad, just wait until you find out that kings are chosen based on microorganisms in their bloodstream called monarchlorians.

 

When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. Death and decay, that feeds new life. Warmth. Cold. Peace. Violence. Balance and energy. A force.

Don't need more sequels

 

I think it depends. Sequels can be good. Afterall, your avatar is from my favourite sequel of all time, one which surpasses the original for me.

I think the problem is lazy sequels.

 

Just let me know when it will be streaming on D+ and then I'll put it on my queue.

 

It's also oversaturation.
Even great sequels like Aliens, T2, Star Trek II etc were followed by more sequels that weren't needed & added nothing to the story.
Horror franchises do it all the time.

Pixar are renowned for their brilliant original movies like Up, Wall-E, Inside Out etc
But now they seem obsessed with making sequels nobody asked for like more Toy Story when they already had a great ending after the third movie.
We don't need more Monsters Inc or Incredibles, just as we don't need more Moana or Frozen. We need new stories, like those were when they were first released.

 

It's not so much about sequels as it is about the Live Action remakes. They're really just running out of good original stories lately.

 

Trailer was interesting but it just had generic tribal music. Comparatively, the original Moana teaser featured "We Know the Way". Let's hope they have some memorable songs in the sequel. I hope Disney realizes that the staying power of their movies is the music* (and a good story of course).

To me, the best part about Moana's legacy was a video I've seen of DJ singing to his daughter one of the familiar songs.

 

You said it yourself, really. We had three good Tory Story movies, and then a fourth that was only okay. The problem wasn’t that it was a sequel, it’s that it was only an okay film. As I said, lazy sequels are the problem.

 

Yeah but they're no longer writing them because they have a story to tell, they're writing them to cash-in on a brand name.
