After seeing Godzilla Minus One, I wasn't really looking for forward to seeing this film. But I did, and really enjoyed it. The character of Godzilla can be artful and critic pleaser, but also fun a campy crowd pleaser; much like the character of Batman with Nolan's The Dark Knight and Adam West's Batman 66.

So my brother and I went to see GxK again, this time in both 3D and DX. DX is where your seats move, there is water spray and "snow" and light flashes and all sorts of cool features that make the experience almost like an amusement park ride. We saw MINUS ONE like this and it was great. In terms of GxK, my feeling was it was a bit much, in that GxK has so much more action, you are rarely NOT being bounced around. That is not a complaint, really, and not a knock on GxK - just saying that, in general, I think the DX experience might be better when there are more lulls where you can appreciate the effects.

I have never been all that into the modern 3D movies. I threw that "modern" in there because, as was pointed out to me, modern 3D movies generally try to create depth. Old 3D movies, not infrequently, would have things "reaching out from the screen". I suspect that has been rejected as too cheesy. Anyway, I don't feel that the 3D added anything to my experience, despite some panoramic shots of the Hollow Earth that you'd imagine would have great 3D impact. Take that for what it is worth, given that I readily admit to not being into modern 3D.

But as for the movie itself? I may have enjoyed it more on a second viewing, and I enjoyed it a lot the first time. It's a big, fun, noisy, monster brawl of a movie. It is, without a doubt, goofy and crazy, but it is those things in the best sense -- this movie intends to be a fun, spectacle-filled movie for those who want to see giant monsters fight and smash stuff. Since that describes me to a T, I had a blast. To avoid even slight spoilers I won't say when or where but there is a wonderful battle in the movie where the monsters, good or bad, don't give a #@$@$ about collateral damage and utterly devastate a city in a wonderfully escapist old-school 60s/70s Toho way. The powerful, emotional, very human (and yet very Godzilla) MINUS ONE, the occasionally slow but still worthwhile MONARCH series on APPLE TV, and then this over the top fun monster fight spectacle? Great year to be a giant monster fan!

This isn't woke. This is just bad nerding all around. Firstly, how do they not realize that those are completely different movies, and movie series, that are decades apart, with totally different Godzillas, and with 3 movies preceding this current one? Also, regardless of gender, Godzilla falling in love with Mothra would not make either of them lesbian/gay? They're completely different species. If I fell in love with a male giraffe, it would not make me gay. Wrong adjective.

Bad movie fan. Bad science. Bad sociology. Bad use of adjective.

I loved this movie. My kids loved it. It's stupid Kaiju beat down fun.

I can fully understand why critics are underwhelmed and why moviegoers are pleased.

GxK knows what kind of movie it is and sets out to be that to the best it can be. The human story is just window dressing and justification for the Main Event, and it delivers in spades. This is Kaiju WrestleMania and that's literally all I've ever wanted from these movies! It's Kaiju Big Battle w/ Godzilla and Kong!

It's not Minus One and never attempted to be Minus One, because it's hard to make Godzilla an actual franchise and "cinematic universe" while maintaining a heavy allegorical message. Showa Godzilla stopped being an allegory when Raids Again came out and started putting Godzilla against other giant monsters. The same thing happened in the Heisei era. Return of Godzilla/1985 was a more allegorical tale, followed by x Biollante and numerous classic Goji vs monsters thereafter. Millennium didn't even pretend to begin with a serious allegory and immediately started with Orgus.

If Minus One is in the vein of 1954, GxK is in the spirit of nearly every other Godzilla movie ever made.

It likely won't be this year.

They need to leave plenty of room for Godzilla x Kong + Mothra - Rodan ÷ Shimo = Mecha-King Ghidorah squared. :)

Will we ever see the Gargantuas in these films , hollow earth would be the perfect way to introduce them , have the green one try to take over but the brown one aligns with Kong against the green one and some new threat , no Godzilla involvement just call it King Kong vs The Gargantuas.

It indeed is! Minus One is on Netflix!
Really hoping we get a physical release announced soon, but this will tide me over until then.

Netflix in North America and other countries and also digital VOD, I would assume that the disc may take longer than usual, distribution of this film be wacky. But can watch right now!

I really wish that WB and Toho would have coordinated these releases between Minus One and GxK in terms of home video. I don’t know how much truth there is in the rumor that Toho and WB can’t release their own Godzilla films on video in the same year, but if true it’s head scratchingly stupid.

I remember when Peter Jackson’s King Kong came out on video. It was a big deal because not only did that movie get a video release (under Universal) , but we got brand new DVDs of the original Kong, Son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young (all WB properties), King Kong vs Godzilla and King Kong Escapes (under Universal). It was a veritable King Kong Day and I walked away that day with all of those movies, and all the studios involved were richer and happy. There’s no reason why WB and Toho can’t be making money at the same time.

    Godzilla Minus One

Holy hell, this film has a huge reputation but did it live up to it!

It manages to be both homage and re-invention of the older films. Also, when you get right down to it, Godzilla is a total bastard. Turns up, wrecks stuff, kills people, stomps off.

Setting it in post-war Tokyo and telling its tale over 3-4 years is a clever structure. It allows for both an episodic story, while examining the changing culture in Japan, as it's people moves away from the ideal if death in battle.

The ground eye view of Godzilla it adopts enables both a homage to old style effects, with new style efffects for how Godzilla's rampage would be felt.

Very smart, clever, fun and entertaining.

Watched Godzilla Minus One on Netflix for the first time.

    I was not expecting

To be happy and moved by him running to the hospital with the little girl in his arms and seeing Noriko alive.

Growing up, Godzilla 1985/Return of Godzilla was always my favorite entry. Probably since I was 7 or 8 years old.

I think I can say confidently, after a second viewing and without recency bias, that Minus One has usurped that movie for me. Such a spectacular movie.

I rewatched Minus One on Netflix, and im still feeling the shock at how much they achieved on such a small budget. It is a true movie lover’s movie.

Since Akiko cried two different times in the film to evoke emotion from the audience regarding Noriko, I was expecting a heartfelt "Mommy" to come from her lips at the end, but we didn't get that. Instead they decided to focus cryptically on the black mark on Noriko's neck to set up a potential sequel. Missed opportunity in my opinion.
