I like the idea that Bazil was needed for the forest. Adds some color to the mission. And some culture. More interesting for the Jedi to have the equivalent of a tracking dog than to just walk in the forest looking. Helps build the world out.

I don’t care if he’s essential for the plot or not. Star Wars could use some meat on the bone, rather than always stripping things down (pun not intended, re: Qimir). Not all characters or elements of the world need to be essential for the plot. Sometimes color can just be color.

I am not against this at all, hence not mentioning anything about the elephant birds because I love that kind of thing, makes the world feel more lived in.

The issue is that sniff thing is chewing up valuable screen time and it makes no sense for them to need him. Basically, they needed him to track down Kelnacca - cool I'm on board with that. Since then, they have all been running in and out of the forest and getting flung all over the place and can easily find their way now. So...if this is the case...why was he needed in the first place?

And that whole ship thing was just stupid. I might be remembering wrong but isn't he supposed to be a Jedi as well but just uses the force in a different way? If so, why does he not just go straight up to Master Sol and say, hey dude - she's not what she seems man.

Plus it just feels like we have Peter Rabbit running around in Jedi robes.

No, he wears a civilian robe, like Osha did.

I do agree that his scenes on the ship went on a bit too long, and took away from the weight of Sol’s agony and Mae’s actions, especially in the wake of the mass murder that just happened. It was tonally pretty inconsistent with that. But clearly intentional. My guess is that Headland got a note saying “too dark - add slapstick here.”

That said, I didn’t mind it much.

Bazil was awesome. His little karate moves were hilarious. [face_laugh]

I appreciate how his "assault" on Mae serves to show that she is softened. He was attempting to be an obstacle in the path of her plans for Sol but she just kinda let him karate all over her without so much as shoving him away.

you know, if Kelnacca gets to be the big hairy dude, Bazil should get to be the tiny hairy dude.

The best thing about Bazil is how much his actions confuse the audience. I think it's fascinating to see him shift alliances and people start scratching their heads wondering about his motives.

    Hilarious!

That's certainly a funny way to justify nonsense! Breaks down to: "It's funny, so, who cares about logic?" :)

I don't think Sol wasn't intending to gun down Mae, as he needed her alive to prove his point or whatever. Not to mention that Bazil previously attacked Mae, then Mae was captured, and then Mae stabbed Sol in the chest. Why would he know risk his and Sol's life to save her?

Also, I think Sol may have simply been trying to use a mini-tractor beam or something. It makes no sense that he would've been trying to gun her down.

Overused and annoying by the end.

Should have been a one time only appearance at most.

If Qimir can track people through the Force, so can the Jedi.

I heard a theory that Bazil may be Force sensitive and sensed that Sol might possibly kill Mae.

However, I think the idea is he just became concerned with Sol's behavior at a certain point, whether or not Sol was actually planning to do something deadly.

Bazil himself may have been confused by Mae since she is exactly the same as Osha and he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two. He would maybe suspect some difference but his senses wouldn't be able to isolate it as usual.

One of Headland's themes, as we all know, is ambiguity between a purely light and dark identity, and so she gives us a number of scenarios where characters shift back and forth or occupy confusing middle spaces.

Bazil actually plays into all of this, I believe.

Huh? His entire role in the last episode he appeared in revolved around knowing the difference between Mae and Osha.

He sensed something off, but I don't think he could really know for certain they were different because they are not different.

The show tells us they are identical in every way.

So whatever was going on with Bazil is more complicated than we assumed.

They were born identical. I imagine they picked up different scents along their different paths in life. Bazil knew Mae wasn’t Osha, and attacked her for it in the previous episode he was in. Remember the karate chop. Never forget the karate chop.

The karate chop is a Top 10 moment from the show. And also served to demonstrate a softening in Mae, who did nothing to stop Bazil's attempts to be an obstacle in the way of fulfilling her goal of killing Sol.

Pointless character that chewed up way too much screen time and kind of ends up being symbolic of so many of the issues with this show.
