Godzilla Minus One Minus Color will hit Netflix soon, excuse to rewatch!

 

Seen this moment more times than I can count, and it gives me chills every single time.

 

Well I redeemed one of those 3 free months of Apple TV deals and with all the content available the first thing I went to was Monarch Legacy of Monsters. Didn't expect all the secret family melodrama in the first episode!

 

Feels very much like Monarch is where the MonsterVerse has put / is putting almost all of its human-centric storytelling, leaving the movies free to be little more than crowd-pleasing kaiju brawls. Which totally isn't a criticism, by the way!

But yeah, I loved Monarch, and can't wait for Season 2. Am also hoping for a Blu-Ray release at some point.

 

Haven't posted in a while, got a promotion at work and been super busy.

On Monarch show- loved it except there was one episode towards the middle that seemed like 90% filler. Can't wait for season 2.

On GxK- Kinda feel the same way I did for Alien Covenant. Liked it but with a few tweaks it could've been amazing. First off it's too short. Second, to quote Star Wars shows critiques here, ''the pacing was off''. Skar was introduced way too late. And also how could he or one of his slave monkeys, destroy a Monarch outpost yet they were stuck in that Hollow Earth area? Him invading the Iwai village should've been just after the half way point or so not 20mins before the end.

It would've been awesome if some of Skar's army made it to the surface. Godzilla can beat Kong and Skar but 10 Kong's at once? That's a fight I want to see. He did smack two of them in the zero-g fight (which I loved) but that was too quick. He could've actually hit something besides a building and Shimo with his super-charged atomic fire.

Shimo- I feel it would've worked better as an outright villain instead of a good monster forced to do bad stuff. Great design though.

Godzilla- Not a fan of the evolved look but the most vocal critics online are insels who think it makes him gay somehow so I just roll with it. My biggest hope is in the next movie he is either back to normal with no explanation or the new villain somehow drains that energy from him and he reverts to blue.

Kong- Never been a Kong fan but this movie actually made me sympathize with him. Still I was so happy when Godzilla stomped him again.

The one where everybody was wandering about in the blizzard, having flashbacks? Because if so, I'd agree.

I do like how the MonsterVerse stays true to its determination that Godzilla is stronger than Kong, 'cause that's twice he's (eventually) beaten him now. Should be interesting to see what (or who) gets re-imagined to face Goji in his next standalone movie. My money's on Destoroyah.

And yeah, congratulations on your promotion!

@Happy Sando yea I meant the wandering in the snow episode. I wasn't at all curious as to how Kentaro and May met. Their dialogue in previous episodes was enough. One thing I'm hoping for that didn't happen in S1 is background/origin of the Oxygen Destroyer. It's kinda dumb how in KotM they are just like "we have a new weapon" and use it. Especially if they go with Destroya in the future.

I'm getting an itchy trigger finger, 'cause there's still no word on an official physical release in my country. Are you tempted?

 

Well, I did just find this very recent article...

...which says that Toho have announced four different physical versions for the US market, none of which contain Godzilla Minus Colour (unlike the Japanese edition you linked to). This lines up with the ten months it took them to release Shin Godzilla on Blu-Ray.

One of those new versions (the super-expensive and incredibly limited steelbook) is listed on Amazon US, but it's temporarily out of stock.

Can't see the promised pre-order pages anywhere else.

 

Apologies for the double post, but the MonsterVerse is getting its first dedicated videogame... which doesn't feature Godzilla, but still.



I'm guessing Toho have separate Godzilla game rights. It's a neat concept at least, even if gameplay looks a little janky. Uses the ORCA device to solve the problem of playing as a human whilst still getting to interact with Titans.

And the music is giving me Monarch: Legacy of Monsters vibes, which is no bad thing, either.

 

I still wish Kong's gauntlet had come with electric-grip, for absolutely no good reason whatsoever except that it would be cool, it would give him an additional combat weapon, and it would sorta/kinda harken back to the 1962 movie. And it would be cool. Now why would they have a gigantic gauntlet in Kong's size that somehow generates and channels electric shocks? Um...because it would be cool. Just saying.

 

You should be protected by their pre-order price guarantee, right...?

From what I can gather, the UK release is being done through a small company predominantly known for anime. Still no listings on any of the major retailers, or on their own site, but they made a blog post about it recently, so fingers crossed.

It's starting to feel like this might be the last scattershot handling of the I.P. though, which I'd welcome. Whilst browsing around, I noticed that Criterion are about to release a new 4K version of the 1954 original (which'll also include its Western edit) and that Funko have a new line of Godzilla variants coming soon, up to and including Shin Godzilla. Before very recently, they'd only made merchandise under the MonsterVerse licence.

Swore blind I'd never buy another blasted Funko Pop... but darn it, I need me a Shin Godzilla.

Godzilla is at peak popularity at the moment. I really hope Toho take the opportunity to globally streamline everything going forward.
