I’m curious how much you could “subtract” from Arcane’s development cycle for stylistic and budget reals before the loss would be too great; given the sheer detail, craft and nuance in even the less artistically explosive scenes, I’m inclined to think that much of the cost is genuine “man hours” rather than tech and software. Even something like how the Jinx and Powder personas had slightly different face-builds to help facilitate storytelling would still absorb plenty of work time to try and get both personas perfect on a scene-by-scene basis. On the other hand, there’s probably some comparatively less expensive but still high quality aesthetic changes that could fit different areas around Runeterra - Noxus could be portrayed in a less detailed and more brutalistic Gothic horror type of way, Demacia could use some austere and clean marble-like designs to cut some costs, and the Freljord could have a simplistic but cold beauty just like Shurima can have a warm but desolate appeal. On the other hand, Bildgewater has almost as many steam-punk attributes as Arcane Season 1 Zaun, and Ionia is sort of conceptually Zaun’s opposite as a land of glorious nature and wild magic, as is Ixtal; those areas might be hard to adapt without Arcane-levels of detail. But, since they suggested that they have *one* show in the pipeline next but are looking at *three* stories, i found myself wondering what stuff could fit either as a full show or as an entry in an anthology series (both of which would benefit from the three-episode-release schedule). For shorter anthology tales or possible season ideas, I’d like to see: - Swaim getting humbled by Irelia in Ionia, encountering the demon Raum, and conquering him to uncover the dark horrors of Noxus and rise to become its visionary leader (anthology friendly.) - The feuding feudal warlords of Freljord leading to a young Ashe and Sejuani falling out as battle sisters, Tryndamere joining Ashe as a politically advantageous if barbaric husband, and any or all of them uncovering the terrible secret about Lissandra, the Watchers, and the Void (series friendly.) - Demacia’s mix of utopian and dystopian storytelling, with Garen and Lux navigating a mix of sometimes righteous and sometimes bigoted politics, with Silas as the rising and justified rebel leader challenging their world within while Noxus challenges it from without thanks to Darius and Katarina (series friendly.)
Again, I know really nothing about the LOL lore; but I've read in various places that there's a lead character from another region of whom is somehow closely associated with Jinx. No promises, but it would open up for some potential surprises.
I thought I read when she show started that it was supposed to be a canonical prequel to the League of Legends game. But I am pretty sure you can't get the game out of what happens here
What I’ve heard is that RIOT Games is sending mixed messages, and is notorious for being slow to update lore consistently anyways - that they’ve at different times said that Arcane is its own canon, is the new canon, etc., but regardless has still not updated some characters’ lore while still releasing Arcane-referenced variant skins and redesigns that clash with the original designs. They’re other attempts at storytelling have apparently been mixed-messaging examples as well; they had apparently two or three variations on “The Ruined King makes his move and gets defeated!” intended as a crossover both with LOL proper (primarily just as skins), some tie-in stories trying to make a narrative with some cutscenes, then a separate video game with its own story, than a novelization doing its own thing as well. If they’re smart... they’ll probably just let it remain ambiguous and allow whatever the most popular lore work is remain the most popular lorework.
The problem with making a statement that YES THIS IS A PREQUEL TO THE FAMILIAR GAME is that you're essentially married to what goes on in the lore. There won't be any major surprises with the familiar characters' fate as they'll be known to appear. What's cool about Arcane is that it's not only been flexible with the lore, but they're actually adding new champions based on the popular series. It's not going to get me to play the game, though. Funny thing was that I recently watched a reaction video of a former LOL player who was reluctant to watch the series because he'd been disenfranchised by the game...and he absolutely loved the series.
I saw a comment on the Netflix Geeked account of Change dot org petition to make a series about the time bomb alt universe ahaha. I'd love to link to the posts but they're reels and we can't play reels on here, TFN admins! Anyway same energy
I just had to share this in appreciation after watching it on YouTube. Among the things that were so awesome about Arcane was the fluid hand-to-hand combat in animation. No swords. No guns. Nothing but bare hands; and there's several professional fighters (boxing/MMA) on YouTube commenting about it like this one.
Just for fun, here’s one of the YouTube nerds breaking down one idea for potential Arcane spinoffs. Minor language warning: Spoiler
I won’t try… I finished watching Season 2 but I was honestly so lost the entire season. There seemed to be too many missing scenes to transition characters and storyline or provide reminders/clarity. I think I need to do a full rewatch of both seasons relatively close together. The animation is fantastic, and it’s clearly a true passion project of its makers.
I definitely had rewatched Season 1 a week before I started watching the Season 2 episodes. Of course they tie together.
I've watched Season 1 twice, but I have to say S2 kind of lost me. Fantastic animation, but I have no idea what was going on. I guess I'll have to go back and watch s1 and 2 back to back.
I liked Season 2, but each of its arcs needed at least one more episode to let things breathe a little.
There is a lot of talk about deleted/cut scenes that the French studio suggests may eventually be released at some point (maybe the physical Blu-Ray/4K release).
Sorry for the DP but couldn't wait to share this as I just came across it a little while ago. It's a fan edited tribute, with music, featuring scenes from Season 2. Spoiler
I just watched season 2, i watched season 1 maybe half a year ago. And wow this show is fire. It shows what you can really do with animation in storytelling. Know nothing about the video game. My favorite characters, are Jinx, Mel, Jayce and Vi. Sad its ending with season 2, but looks like we get three more shows set in the world after this show. I was shocked they killed maybe one of the best characters in Jayce and Victor, and glad Jinx survive. Maybe Vander too. Loved the Caitlyn and Vi romance, and Mel Coming into her own. Seems like first spin off will focus mostly on black rose with Mel, maybe Jinx and Ekko will be involved.
I'm not sure how much Jinx and Ekko would be involved in future stories; if at all. But the Black Rose scenario is definitely a possibility for the future shows. It wasn't really fully explained in Arcane.
They will probably work as second guest characters, but how soon will Caitlyn tell Vi and both come into the new shows.
"Ma Meilleure Ennemie" already has like 16 million views for just the audio in like 2 weeks and is already third most viewed on their page ahaha where is the video already, Riot Music? I did see a funny comment that while Ekko is doing all of this Jace is stuck speeedrunning Dark Souls
Arcane, still too gosh darn expensive. If those spinoffs ever happen wonder what they'll look like? Arcane went way over budget. Riot invested unprecedented sums and years developing the project. In addition to the production costs, the company put tens of millions of dollars more into marketing the show, as well as on a campaign for awards. All told, Riot spent about $250 million on two seasons of the series, League of Legends Executive Producer Paul Bellezza said in an interview with Bloomberg. Netflix paid Riot about $3 million an episode to air the show, with Tencent Holdings Ltd., the Chinese technology giant that owns Riot, paying an additional $3 million for the rights to show it in China, according to Variety. Those payments amounted to less than half the total cost. ... Yet interviews with Riot Games employees and industry analysts indicate it was a commercial failure for the company. Riot spent so much of its own money developing and marketing the show that it didn’t make money from the production. The show also failed to convert many new players or get existing players to spend more money on League of Legends. Leaders on Arcane’s first season didn’t give Riot’s in-game item designers enough time to make new, Arcane-themed items or characters for sale in the game. While new players signed up for free League of Legends accounts, not very many stuck around, according to two people with knowledge of signups. The game is famously complicated to learn and its community can be hard on new players. “We were really surprised with the success of season one,” Bellezza, the League of Legends executive producer, said. That’s “why we probably missed an opportunity to do some in-game activations around it.”
There’s like a 90% chance the showrunner was talking to some suit jockey excitedly explaining he was signing off on a huge budget out of a conviction it would create massive video game buy-in, and just nodding their head out of half-bewilderment and half delight at being given waaaaaay to much cash to generate the reaction the company wanted. Plus, this helps explain how the process for the game skins based off Arcane are so expensive. Just got to hope that any spinoffs still get made with good execution, even if they don’t have the monstrous budget.
