I mean you can probably fast forward through the books that are like “And then Odysseus decided to just bang this hot chick for ten years and if I had been there, I would have said ‘Aw yeah, that’s pretty sweet.’”
Frankly I think that the main problem is that they usually try to impose our modern values into the story and it almost never works. And Guy is right when he points out that with Rome they tend to be more successful. That's probably why (hot take moment) personally I can't think of any famous Oedipus' drama adaptation from Hollywood. It's a story that is so insane that it can't be bent to our modern taste for main character' features and plot structure.
I never made it out to see The Return, but that should be available on streaming soon. Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus was unexpected casting.
I mean I really hope he goes for all the filthy bits. I'm sick to the tits of all this puratinism we've been getting lately.
Will Nolan have the courage to show Odysseus flat out slaughtering the Suitors even though they were unarmed, defeated and just begging for forgiveness and willing to run away for good?
He was inspired to do this by the part where Odysseus has to plug his ears and row past the sirens, because now he’ll have an in-universe explanation for a bunch of loud sound effects that drown out all the dialogue.
