With family visiting, I didn't get to watch this episode until tonight, but I am giving it a 10 out of 10 for KB and Fern's character development alone.

+I found it really moving to learn more about KB's strengths and weaknesses in this episode. As someone with a disability myself, a lot of what KB expressed and the challenges she encountered really resonated with me and rang true. We are seeing her doubts, her fears, and the accommodations she needs not just to succeed but to survive.

+ I appreciate that Fern needed to learn to listen to people, to be more open-minded to different options, and to be more aware of the differing strengths and ability levels of others from her time with Neel. I think that will help her be a better person and a better friend to KB in the future because she will be more sensitive and aware to when KB does need help.

+The hug between Fern and KB at the end was very sweet.

KB bascially stole this episode for me in a good way.

Looking forward to the twists and turns and growth of next episode!

I know that is not the only one from TLJ...but are they supposed to be the same characters? Or just someone of the same species?

Such cheap fan service that barely anyone noticed…

I did. But just assumed it was a member of the same species. Which isn’t cheap fan service at all. It’s just…aliens!

It’s cheap fan service to briefly show aliens that were briefly shown in another Star War? What?

These aliens don’t exactly have a massive fan following either. They were likely chosen because the setting was a luxury spa, and they are known for hanging out in luxury settings (Canto Bight).

This is a huge stretch, Darth. Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

    Yes
It's not. The whole show feels like fan service put together by copy paste rip offs from other movies. I still would not call it bad compared to what we got in the recent past and when looking at the polls here it seems to be well received. I must admit I like to watch it. Nevertheless when looking at imdb episode ratings it crawls around in the 7.x while successfull shows like Andor or Mando or other successful series outside SW were at 8.0-10.0.

Something cannot be a rip off from three completely different movies. You can have elements that are reminiscent of different movies, but you you either rip off one movie or another, not multiple ones. If anything, the most obvious inspiration - and it really is just that - would be Treasure Island.

All in all, it seems like a rather odd criticism considering where this franchise is coming from. The whole point of Star Wars was to be a love-letter to the old adventure movies. So the show is doing exactly what Star Wars had always been about, taking from old adventure stories and even some modern ones. Indiana Jones sure as heck wasn't the first movie to have booby traps, The Goonies not the first story about a bunch of kids on an adventure, and Hook not the first movie about pirates. Star Wars didn't drop from the sky either, and it most definately took inspirations from plenty of earlier movies, not just the old ones from the 30s but also Hidden Fortress and WW2 movies for the space battles.

And no, having an alien on screen for a moment who barely anyone would recognize is anything but fan service. Fan service would be to show and focus on a very familiar character. E.g. adding Boba Fett to ANH and have him look at the camera, that is fan service. Adding the two criminals from the cantina ro Rogue One and have them bump into Jyn, that is fan service. Using an alien in an unremarkable shot for a split second who looks like an alien who could be seen in a movie for a second or two most definately is not. What's next? Complaining that we saw a Rodian for a second as well, and that this was clearly fan service due to one appearing in ANH and TPM?

Yep considering the fact that one by this point of view could argue OG SW started basically as a low key rip off of Frank Herbert’s Dune…
I know, hard topic, but SW is for sure a franchise that never steered clear from heavy “inspiration” from other movies/stories so it is pretty on brand eheheh
I love SC and I love how it is a love letter to a certain era and the feelings that go with it!

    You lost me there, Darth.
Yeah. And it’s not like weird boob alien waltzed in singing opera while swinging a lightsaber and killing everyone in sight. Though admittedly, I might watch that.

And Andor had aliens from TLJ in scenes of Coruscant elite parties likely for the same reason.

This show literally feels nothing like that. If anything, it's a breath of fresh air. It's set in the Star Wars universe, so some continuity is necessary. Showing species that have appeared in other media within the same universe is the way to go. The opposite would be so weird.... Imagine having 10 movies and shows all with different aliens. It would be as if you had 10 separate universes...

Besides, this cannot be fan service anyway, since this alien is completely forgettable and appeared in a forgettable movie. Probably less than 0.1% of all Star Wars fans even noticed this. And a small fraction of them bothered enough to know his name and species.

I would also argue, if you really want to kick the fan service can, wouldn’t x-wings showing up on a proclaimed neutral planet and seemingly not really doing anything of actual note be more the thing to go for?

The X-Wings were there for a specific reason. The kids had to learn they were the "good guys".

Even though their logic could be dangerous in the galaxy! Set aside the fact that in that situation is true… they are the good guys… it is not always the case that “the enemy of your enemy is your friend”… sometimes the enemy of your enemy and your enemy team up against you and it doesn’t end well so… careful kids! The galaxies are wide and dangerous!

They were also there because the spa administrator called them to deal with violent pirates. Which they did. Shooting some pirate ships down.

I'm not sure anyone is a fan of the weird boob alien. Or that anyone on this planet was desperately asking for more of them.

I'm also not sure that reusing aliens and seeing the same species in different shows is technically 'fan service'. What? Are they supposed to reinvent every single alien species for every single show now? The whole point is that we're playing in this sandbox. We're supposed to see the same species again and again.

And they probably just used it because it hadn't been used since the movie, and they had that costume hanging around in the closet.

Fan service would be Mando and Grogo randomly walking by in the background for no reason.
