I've heard Cardinal Tagle of the Philippines might be best set-up as the next Pope, and he actually seems more similar to Francis than not. I'd guess they'll also go back to a traditional Pope name, as one small nod to the unhappy traditionalists. There hasn't been a Leo, Pius, Clement, or Nicholas in a while. Gregory, Urban, or Innocent would be weird. If another new name, maybe Thomas, Augustine, or Luke.
I hope you're right, @Ghost even though I've long since stopped being a believer, I do want the religion of my childhood to grow in the right direction.
He appointed an impressive 79% of all cardinal electors. Now not all of them are gonna be as liberal as him but even if the next pope is even half as liberal as him basically anything above “gays are the devils children” or some bull****. It would be better than my fears. Francis has problems. But the Catholic Church exists and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. I’d rather have popes like him than basically any other pope we have had in the last couple of centuries. Possibly ever. I see some people not here but elsewhere that are like “can’t wait to see him die” as if Catholicism will magically disappear with him. Again for all his faults he is definitely something the catholic church needed. if they’ll ever catch up to the rest of the world it will be under having several popes being progressively more well progressive. even if they stay at the level of liberal Francis is that’s still a step up compared to the Benedict edit: if Francis pulls through I wonder if he resigns regardless. I would think it would be better if that became more common place. Perhaps a pope could have more say over thier successor
Re-reading the 1st page of this thread is an interesting mind **** for me: the TV pictured in the OP was one I bought at Walmart (in October of '04), where I haven't worked there now for 12+ years, and I was still 2+ years away from getting hired at Target, where I'm now approaching my 10th anniversary (this July). Goddamn.
https://bsky.app/profile/noahs.bsky.social/post/3lis4q2zyus2t Pope Pizzabella would be interesting for several reasons. @DarthTunick And you are correct. Time comes for us all. I look at that picture of your TV and thought, we didn't have our house yet (townhome), our daughter (who is going to be nine in two months), my wife was still teaching kindergarten (now is the school principal), and the boys were still toddlers. Now they graduating 8th grade in May. Absolutely insane.
I am here for pope Pizzabella he called for a ceasefire on October 11th 2023 he’s the dude that runs or did run catholic affairs in the holy land. He’s also young as hell. Being a boomer. Honestly a younger pope who’s in their 60s wouldn’t be that bad. As long as they weren’t terrible see the above for why he probably wouldn’t be the worse choice I for one hope Pizzabella becomes the next pope. Sure it probably makes sense to not have the next pope be Italian and the next pope will almost certainly not even be from Europe but you get my point.
Potential Alexander 7th is on hold! Looks like Francis is on the mend for now so that's good. I would expect more medical circumstances are looming soon though. He is probably pretty fragile atm. Pizza with pineapple! And bacon And red bell peppers And Canadian bacon
Things were looking on the up but the Pope had another setback today. Its probably not going to be a quick recovery with bumps along the way.
I mean, yeah, that's what everyone's talking about. None of this would make sense if he wasn't there.
I’m going to be honest, and I apologise if you’re Catholic, but there isn’t going to be a recovery. Those bumps are on the way down.
yeah this is the typical expensive intervention with end of life care for a person who doesn't have a legally binding DNR in place for, let's say, religious reasons.
