Not gonna lie, I was not expecting to enjoy that playlist as much as I did. Some of those really slapped. Highly enjoyable all around. Who barely edge out Back to Me which barely edges out Domodachi for me. Who - and I mean this in the highest possible complimentary way - sounds like a song I would dig hearing on open mic night at a really good coffee shop. Probably because you included the acoustic version, but full credit to you, because I think it absolutely worked in acoustic, and I'm not sure I'd like it as much otherwise.
I thought it was going to be "Standing Next To You" but when it came time to actually vote "Who" won my internal tug of war. Fun list, solojones
Chasing That Feeling seems to be a favorite and I'm not surprised. It's a great pop song with also a relatable message. Glad you liked Back to Me as well. Groin is my favorite song off that album and I'm really hoping to see it performed live someday. Domodachi being right behind for me as well. Weird fact about Domodachi, Cillian Murphy put it on his year end favorites list. Yeah the regular version of Who is definitely different, although I do love it as well..but the acoustic version is just something pure and beautiful to me. Jimin is so unique. Glad you enjoyed! Standing Next to You is a great vibey song and the dance with it to me is amazing. Who in acoustic mode though is just so heartfelt. Thanks everyone for listening with open minds again!
I haven't cast a vote yet for my own list but I'll wait until tomorrow or tonight in case any more votes come in
you've still got the rest of today, and all day tomorrow. i voted a few days ago, and really enjoyed your playlist sj - a genre that i'm slowly listening to more and more.
Well I would have voted for Groin I think, but I'm so glad so many songs got votes and also that people seemed to really like Chasing That Feeling. Definitely one of my fav actual kpop songs in the last few years!
With 33.3% of the vote, the second song on the JCC Playlist is "Chasing That Feeling (English version)" by Tomorrow x Together, from solojones' playlist. Next up is @Lord Vivec! Two links to the playlist: (YT) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtqjRCPQx0e5Z1D2ZlsLl2lD0oH8lRE88 (Spotify) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/79lo4I49RfztpHIHtLMAvR?si=e532323cfa4c4aac Voting is live, and will run for a full week. @Jedi_Sith_Smuggler_Droid, you're on deck.
Alrighty! Here's my explanation post. The themes are mostly the same with a couple of new twists: dark synth, some aggrotech, some chillwave, some breakcore. 1) Synchronize - I wanted to start the playlist strong, so I picked a song I really like with drive. The singing is very good and so is the music. At least Emotiona's singing. Swarm does try to sing a little bit in the middle and I'll be the first to admit that his singing can be an acquired taste. But overall the song is really good. 2) Fractions - Now this is a song that will make you float away. It's raining, the streets are full yet the noise is drowned out. I can get lost in this one; it reaches deep into an itch that most songs can't. Wayfloe and Jessie Frye are new to my lists, but I think this is also a strong contender for winning. 3) Tech Noir 2 - I don't think Tech Noir 1 made it onto one of these. I liked it, but it wasn't as strong as some of GUNSHIP's other offerings at the time, which did make these lists. This song, however, blows 2 out of the water. Like the first one, this song has an introduction by director John Carpenter (film buffs, take note!), and it flows way better with the music. This song is cooler. My wife and I have a joke that GUNSHIP has officially become "cool." 4) Dark Tide - You've heard Klayton before on my lists. You've heard Megan McDuffee before on my lists. Now they have a song together. This is another chill song that I can get lost to. Their voices are really good in this. They're harmonizing with themselves and each other in this. It's great. 5) Discover the Universe - Alright, so this is one of my songs with no lyrics. I know those tend to not do that great in these, but I really like this one. If I remember correctly, Fury Weekend's Thousand Lights (featuring Megan McDuffee!) won a prior one of these so I maintain the quality is there. This song really gets you pumped up and ready for action. 6) CODE - Alright, so this one's a weird one. I'm introducing you to a genre called breakcore. I did have a breakcore song in one of the prior lists, but it didn't really get much fanfare. Nedaj took a song from the Twilight soundtrack, of all places, called Decode, remixed it into an aggressive synth backing, and produced this great thing. It's weird, but I really like it. 7) Diabolic - Another vocal-less song, I love moving to this song. The perfect drive fast (safely) song. I'm listening to Dance with the Dead less and less these days it seems, but this one still stays with me. It's complex and with a strong driving force. What more can I ask for? 8) Tactical Precision Disarray - This song plays as my fleet of ships arrive and I'm standing on the lead ship's ramp as it descends onto the platform. The wind is strong and the sky is dark. I refuse to believe this is for anything else. The drop two-and-a-half minutes in is simply superb. 9) Voice of Dissent - one of the industrial songs that remain on my playlists from my college years. This album came out in 2004 and this is a protest song. You guess what this was protesting . Even without the protest, though, this is still very strong, and it's an aggrotech song I think you'll be able to enjoy. 10) Vampires - I think this is The Midnight's debut on one of my lists. This is another very chill song but it has an impressive synth composition. Also, as @Ramza says: "dat sax." 11) Blood for the Blood God - I try not to have two songs from the same album on a list, but this is more a HEALTH song than a GUNSHIP song. It's also part of the new "GUNSHIP is finally cool" album. Loosely themed off of 40k, you can't tell me you aren't ready to take on the world after this song plays. 12) Strangers - Another debut to my list, you've probably never heard of Glitbiter before. I only discovered her recently and this is my favorite of her dark synth tracks. She recently joined Dead Astronauts as a vocalist so I'm looking forward to a good career for her. I chose it to finish my playlist because I wanted to end strong as well. I hope y'all enjoy this playlist a lot and I'm looking forward to see which one wins.
awesome playlist vivec! hard to choose just one, but there is just something about perturbator for me. pretty sure I’ve voted for their song on most of your playlists. this one gave a bit of a mass effect vibe.
I will be listening to this either after work or tomorrow. Looking forward to it! Vivec you have a different vibe of music than I do but like that song Streets you shared before is still in my rotation. What I love about this project.
Definitely not my cup of tea, but thanks for both the playlist and the write-ups/backgrounds/exposition. That's pretty much why I love these threads - that I listen to stuff that's not in my norm and outside of what I'd normally put on. There was something ... familiar? almost Moonlighting-esque, I dunno, perhaps I'm so uncultured that all Saxophones sound the same to me ... about Vampires, so it got my vote. I also considered Blood for the Blood God. That one slapped pretty hard.
It's so hard to discover new music and new genres of music. The radio plays only the popular stuff while every streaming app uses an algorithm to play songs that are already in genres you like.
This list challenged me a bit more than most. The heavy leaning synth and industrial is definitely not as much for me. I thought the couple no lyrics songs were some of the strongest though, but perhaps because of dat sax I have to go with the minimal lyrics of Vampires. Also because I did like what lyrics were there a lot.
@Lord Vivec I'm going to listen either during the 2nd half of my shift today at Target, or right after... going to need the tonic, for Saturdays are always our busiest goddamn day.
First off, Vivec, congrats on being married; I know you had mentioned having a girlfriend before, and if you had made a post about getting married, I missed it. As to the playlist, much as it was for sj’s, while this sort of techno-instrumental stuff isn’t high on my list of musical enjoyment, I can understand why it’s popular for many, etc. While ‘Voice of Dissent’ featured my favorite section of music (the lead up to the lyrics, was imaging a Godzilla type battle during that ), and ‘Discover The Universe’ overall was the most musically pleasing to listen to, my vote’s going to ‘Tech Noir 2’… a John Carpenter cameo was niiiiice, but man that jazzy-sounding over the last minute or so; something about that just popped for me.
Hey John Carpenter has written a piece of iconic synth music himself too because he wrote the theme for Halloween
Yup; as insanely iconic & great as the original theme is, I prefer/enjoy the version he used as the Halloween II theme.
it was close between fractions and vampires for me. gave both tracks a couple more listens, and ultimately went with fractions. fun playlist!
Thanks! I hadn't made a post about it; I'm not much of a show-off on the important things (but I'm a show-off on the not-important things!) What's funny is my wife predicted one of those two winning so....good taste.
Decided to save this for my Sunday run in Central Park and it was a great decision! It really helped set my pace. Decided to go with Tacitical Precision Disarray. I really like Perturbator and I got the whole platform on the lead ship vibe you said in your post. A great mysterious dark song. And that drop at 2:40 was fantastic. I was absolutely flying on the Central Park loop when that hit.
