Absolutely it should be addressed in any future film. And if it is addressed, and if done well, it could actually make that creative choice in TROS appear less problematic in retrospect. To use your example, I can imagine Rey being rejected by her students when they find out she's Palpatine's granddaughter... that would create a potentially very interesting plot point. It would add drama and provide a reason for 'conflict' that's as a result of stuff that happened in the ST... However, and it's a big however.... I'm not sure DLF will want to go anywhere near some of the poor creative narrative decisions in the sequels. I imagine they'll just want to avoid them, pretend they don't matter and move on. We'll see...

    Not really.

Anakin living on and or having relatives is only a 'problem' retroactively. Its introduced in TPM. In the OT, he has no reason to believe that he even has a son to search for. As Vader, he refuses to accept that he's Anakin. That life is gone. It's torture for him to even think about it. But that PT trilogy also solves that issue at the same time. Its a place he despises and would never return to, even knowing that Obi-wan is alive and 'well'.

Lucas will simply far more careful with making it up as he went, and retroactively changing the story. Is it perfect? No. But certainly better than Somehow Palpatine Returns, on oh by the way Rey is a Palpatine, oh and by other way, Rey takes the name Skywalker even though her own parents who she's been desperate to see again fro 3 movies, were actually pretty good people and sacrificed their lives to save her and get jack from her in the end.

I don't think it will be addressed. They would likely rather people just accept it rather than making a big deal out of it. Even if its just a quick explanation and moving on.

Plus the whole learning she isn't a Skywalker thing actually wouldn't mean anything to her students, Unless they were watching Star Wars like us and seem very aware of the Skywalkers history and legacy. Otherwise who is going to care?

Its also fair to say the chances of anyone knowing her connection to Palpatine probably died with the Skywalkers. And Its unlikely to be in birth records or anything.

They probably won't want to make a big deal out of it. she is now a Skywalker by name and move on.

They did and they are. Remember in TFA how Rey & Finn reacted to meeting Han & Chewie, and it was crystal clear that they knew who Luke was. And at the end of TLJ, the kids are playing with their action figures and obviously reenacting the battle of Crait. We don't know how word got out to the galaxy at large, and we don't know how accurate the retellings are, but there's no doubt that the common people know about the Skywalker story.

Personally i see the last scene in TROS as classic Hollywood «show dont tell» trap ending. Abrams should have just cut the scene where Rey gets the question from the old woman, or cut to where Rey just watching the force ghosts of Luke and Leia - and then her in front of the twin suns of Tatooine. We did not need her to say anything at all.

Or, it does not even mean that much as some fans claim it does. I have never seen as many grown up Star Wars fans overreacting over one single scene. Maybe Rey just watches Luke and Leia, and for a few seconds decides that she would make a symbolic statement for herself.

Maybe thats whats the name means to her. Not, that its her legacy name or have anything to do with ancestry. Maybe, it mirrors the ending of the The Last Jedi ( God forbid, JJ and Rian hated each other, but finally they did match up in a narrative way). And its not meant to be taken literally - that she keeps the name Skywalker.

Maybe, its also a typical Abrams/ Hollywood cheesy ending - like the hero giving a fxxx finger to Palpatine. For the audience sake. Because, in Hollywood, even the heroes are sometimes a bit dumb you know.

    Dont take everything so serious.

I suspect it's more that it's emblematic of the extremely poor creative choices that the ST excelled in.

I love when characters make huge symbolic statements that change the course of the saga based on a few seconds random meaningless reflection.

As i wrote. Overreacting. What major course change of the saga did it make. Like midiclorians? Its all in your head. I bet the 12 year old version of you would have loved it.

Why was I credited with the "overreaction" quote? That was from Othini, not me (not that I entirely disagree with it, but it wasn't something I wrote.)

Isn't there a whole Sequel Trilogy forum where this tired old discussion can go?

True. Even if i only discuss things in the «Future Films forum» these days. Sometimes in the Television threads as well. I guess things like this comes up when there is little to discuss about Reys character for the upcoming films. Anyway, i am done with the discussion.

    Yes.

I understand the need to occasionally discuss aspects of Rey's character in her New Films thread. But, it should not be to regurgitate the same arguments as in the ST threads.

Let's keep it about the NEW films.

The most we know about this film, as far as I know, is that *somebody* (the villain) does not want the Jedi to exist. Personally I hope this means that we’ll get to see the underworld a bit, as I can Imagine that many galactic criminal organisations such as the Hutts would not want the Jedi back.

I keep thinking Rey's plot in this film is basically the same as the Jedi Search novel from Legends, her bouncing around and finding Force adepts to eventually train, stuff happens

Rey finds and trains new young force sensitives, with a villain fearing the return of the Jedi

Very likely. Although I was personally hoping she’d have some older students, I think somebody who came to the Jedi way later in life could be an interesting story in it’s own right.

There was an older rumor that LFL were looking to cast two younger actors, one male and one female, to presumably play Rey's padawans. Not sure how accurate that is as we haven't heard anything more since then. If I had to guess I think Rey will have a couple of students who already have some proficiency with the Force and will be dealing with whatever threat there is, rather than searching the galaxy for force potentials.
