It is about time seeing "Yutaji" officially after all these yrs. I remember seeing an AvP book titled Prey at our K&B pharmacy in the 90's and i thought it would be a good b day gift for a friend. Said friend never got it lol. I enjoyed that book and still have it. Was 1st time i ever saw the word Yutaji.

I think I've narrowed it down to just being completely underwhelmed and confused with the Pred's visual look. Cause the trailer isn't that bad in itself. That feels kinda strange that I'd be so thrown off for this long just cause of its looks. It looks really bad though..that skin tone, hairstyle(where they have always had the forehead showing), and the lack of spot pattern on face/forehead...just ick. I think I issues with the eyes to. This is all crazy right?

That's definitely not the same breed from the "main line" Pred's of 1&2. Seriously why is that mass of hair in the spot that's supposed to be bald? It's forehead is fn tiny!!

I think he's meant to look puny even by Predator standards

I rewatched Prey the other day and I'm not thinking it holds up as much as I 1st found it. It did get a bit silly at times a gal is going toe to toe with a Alpha(?) Predator before she outsmarted him with his own device. To many 1&2 references with the trap course and then losing an arm. I think the only thing that just really shines is the time period. That said it's better by far then AvP 2, Predators or The Predator so it's definitely on the right track to bring the franchise back up.

I read issue 1 of of the Predator vs Spider-Man comic, pretty gnarly for a Spider-Man comic, JJ uses the typical Predator heatwave and killing spree to sell papers, MJ ends up trapped in a subway (shades of Predator 2!) with a Predator that wears people's faces

Careful there...you can do that...but then you realize how much better 1 is than 2.

If you watch them separately, 2 gets it's own chance to shine.

Watching them back to back...I think I'd struggle watching poor Danny Glover try to climb drain pipes and not want to flip back to muddy Arnold roaring into the Jungle.

While I definitely agree that 1 is the best, I never think it detracts from 2. The urban (Concrete Jungle) setting alone gives 2 it's own flair, and let's it stand on it's own.

I love the element of sweating heat in part 2.
And you can never go wrong with those Danny Glover pants.

It doesn't detract...it just reveals some of the lacking aspects of 2.

For example...I totally agree the urban setting does provide it's own visuals and situations.

But in the build up to the climax of the film...doesn't the city seem suspiciously empty?

It's Danny and Predator on rooftops and fire escapes and no one sees? No one shouts? No one calls the cops?

Even when they are running through the apartment building...only a few people look to see what is going on...and that is the end of it...no followup until after the ship leaves.

No helicopters from the police or media flying around?

Again, not until after the ship leaves.

It's like the city freezes for 15 minutes, and then "snap", wakes up when the ship leaves.

It's like a scene out of a Batman movie, and even those have more life in the city than Predator 2 does at that moment.

The first film, by contrast, goes to exquisite detail in setting up the isolation of our heroes in the dense jungle. By the end, Arnold has no choice but to go toe-to-toe with nothing but his ingenuity, labor, and the environment.

    -----------

Now...to balance that off...I will praise the subway scene in Predator 2...my favorite of the film, actually...as having those crowded, chaotic elements one would expect from dropping a Yautja into a city.

    -----------

    Like Predator 2.

    LOVE Predator 1.

Hmm, not sold on that trailer. I'm genuinely not sure I want a Predator to be the main character. Are they going to be able to get a good performance out of a Predator? Not sure. But Trachtenberg is a great genre director, so I'll give it a shot.

But I definitely don't like the look of the main character. And I liked the modified Predator look in Prey.

What's funny is, to your earlier point, I always think it's funny that during the subway aftermath investigation, Harrigan walks just around the corner, and there's the Predator tearing his buddy apart. Like, maybe a hundred feet away.

This story was told in the crevices. :)

So, there's two things there- one, I'm not sure if they established the exact time, but the rooftop stuff seems to be happening late at night (since the meat locker trap already happens at night beforehand), so most people are in bed and don't really wake up until a freaking spaceship takes off on its booster engines.

And two: Even if it actually is earlier in the evening, you might actually have had a really good point here if this had remained set in NYC as was originally intended by the script. But they chose to set it in LA for budget reasons so that's what we have to work with. And LA is not "the city that never sleeps" NYC. Downtown LA clocks out at 6PM (we barely had enough time for the JC crew to finish eating pizza after Celebration IV one night). So it's actually quite realistic that the city seems very empty at night- because that's what happens. Most action disperses out away from downtown into the non-skyscraper urban sprawl and suburbs after that point in the evening.
