I do think the death being basically an accident makes it more impactful, horribly. I had an Army friend who survived two tours and then died in a car crash. It was... well, it was horribly unfair. I don't necessarily consider it targeting a queer character (yet) as I do expect most of the cast to be dead at some point... And I'm not one to speculate usually, but Dedra's replacement on the Axis project in the ISB - he is queer coded, to me. Or am I reading too deep into it? I am primarily curious as to whether Luthen authorised that bombing on Coruscant or not, cool as it was.
Spoiler Bix and Cassian's scenes in this arc reminded me quite a lot of the end of The Paradise Snare, with Bria and Han living on Coruscant, the former being in a bad mental state and the latter being (rightfully) paranoid. Loved Mothma and Krennic's dispute, especially since they are both established to have an interest in history. IIRC, Senate still had a limited oversight over the military (and because of that KX series were officially used as security droids instead of battle ones), Mon and Orson probably met before on hearings regarding minor things that Emperor allowed to be discussed.
Incredibly happy to report a deep cut for one of my most favorite video games of all time. Spoiler Who expected Baroonda - Grabvine Getaway to feature in Andor? Super cute to see what I assume are names of the crew as racers, also.
Spoiler Really liked the reference to ISB vs Imperial Intelligence infightings. Wonder if it would've been explored more with five seasons plan. Although that would probably have been a shameless fanservice, Ysanne's appearance in this series could've been absolutely great, with her storming ISB building to get Gorst for herself. And Kirtan and Syril's meeting could've been hilarious.
Week 3 speculation: Spoiler We saw Cassian reject the Ghormans and Vel can't be a fan. We saw Luthen suggest he doesn't care if Ghorman becomes a flashpoint. For some reason, we got Wilmon hooked in with Saw. I think this was all work towards one end: Saw ends up on Ghorman with Wilmon and everyone else - Saw suits Luthen's purposes perfectly and I think the Ghormans would think he's ideal, too (Dedra also would probably approve). Saw is kind of perfect to be the type that'll do something that makes whatever Dedra is planning go awry (and worse). As a bonus prediction, I'll say Wilmon dies (and Cass is mad at Luthen about it) and Saw loses his legs
Spoiler I saw posted on reddit, apparently the Encyclopedia from November mentions Tarkin's 'atrocity on Ghorman' from early on in the Empire. Considering how close to release of Season 2 the book was, I wonder if the writers had season 2 knowledge, or just made a mistake referencing the Legends version of the events. I'm going to go with knowledge of Season 2 since other recent books have made references as well
Saw loses his leg fairly close to the events of Rogue One though. He still has both in season 4 of Rebels which would be after the Ghorman massacure
Spoiler I wonder if Syril will die on Ghorman, when the planet core collapses from the mining, and that will spark a shift in Dedra? I really, really like we kept canon the "original" Ghorman Massacre. It's such a great and brutal bit of lore. I've seen people suggest it happen in real life (when protesters here in the US blocked a highway for a protest, I remember a lot of people saying the police should just roll over them since they're illegally blocking transportation and making people run late.) I'm still holding out hope for some kind of twist in general... Uncle Harlo being Luthen, knowing Eedy will tell him everything her son is up to as he rises in the ranks. Dedra being Cassian's long-lost sister. Something like that. There's definitely a theme of Luthen losing touch with the "individual" side of things. His conversations with Mothma, with Cassian, and how he's treated Vel and Cinta. I think Cinta's death was unique but it really worked. That kind of incident is more common in wartime in general than is depicted in fiction, and it underlines how unready the early rebel cells are. I wonder what will become of the guy who pulled the trigger, what was his name? Dilan? Or was that another character. --- Also, plenty of straight characters have and will die in this show too. They didn't make a thing of this being a queer relationship, it was a very authentic portrayal of it as just another relationship that just happens to be two women. I understand the issue of "kill the gay," but this doesn't feel like that at all. Queer characters shouldn't have plot armor just because they're queer or in a non-straight relationship, either. As a gay guy, I thought it was well-done. It's also interesting how they've really made Ghorman into France, and the mirror to the French Revolution seems very intentional. Luthen definitely gave that assignment to Cassian and Bix to kill Ghorst, probably a result of both the plans to expand his torture model as well as a result of Cassian coming to talk with him about how it's his responsibility to "fix" things. I'm afraid Bix won't actually die, but become a very ruthless killer, too ruthless even for Cassian. And her transformation is the thing that makes Cassian realize by Rogue One that he's done a lot of terrible things and now he wants to make it right. It was nice to see Mon and Perrin getting along. I'm still unsure of where that relationship will go, once she flees Coruscant. Again, I think there will be some kind of surprise there when it comes to that choice point. Either a brutal one (from either of them), or a surprising one. Her story was probably negligent this arc since it will probably be one of the main stories for the third arc. Saw is truly crazy. I guess it goes to drive home the Rebellion was made up of all types. Luthen was already showing that too, but showing he's not the only one. I'm guessing we'lll see a more radical Wilmon in the next arc... perhaps crossing paths with that girlfriend again, but not in a friendly way. What has Krennic done by this point to have earned the reputation he seems to already have, among both Luthen and the other Imperials? Spoiler I think it's heavily implied the Rebels' "inside guy" at the ISB has started sleeping with him, to get some information. They seemed to have quite a cozy relationship in the last couple episodes. Spoiler He was more effective than Mas Ammeda would have been, I think. He had such a scary charisma. That scene was truly disturbing for me, to see what the Senate has become. I'm surprised Mothma has lasted that long in it. I wonder how long Padme would have lasted, if she not only survived but also didn't resign to focus on motherhood.
By the way, does anyone think the Ghorman plot won't end with the collapse of the planet core, due to the mining? Not only does it seem like Chekhov's gun, but Vader told Krennic in Rogue One that the Empire was going to spin what happened to Jedha as a mining accident. That seems less ridiculous and more feasible if a legitimate mining accident truly does destroy Ghorman. I also wonder if it's truly kalkite they're mining, and not more kyber...
Spoiler I don't see this. I don't get the sense from their interactions, and Jung has a wife and a kid, which they make a big deal about in the first season and Kleya brings up again in the last episode. I think Jung is nervously trying to get info from Axis from a dude who used to be a syncophant of Dedra's, so their interactions are sometimes awkward, but it's not romance.
Spoiler I so wonder what would happen if Syril's mom ends up at one of the Emperor's parties and talks down Krennic, Vader, Palps and Thrawn and others with her usual charming way...
This is correct. Inspirations for Ryloth were Algeria and Morocco, as stated in The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
French Resistance is what I'm getting from Ghorman. At first I was like "is this Star Wars Les Mis," but then I started thinking about France under Nazi occupation. Now that Chandrila is raving to EDM, I need some rebel factions to be listening to Star Wars punk.
I do feel a little bad that Jyn is being left out when she was the protagonist of the movie this is a prequel to - I mean she has a book for her backstory but how many will read that compared to watching this show? - but if she was going to appear, it probably would have been as a partisan in season 1. Now she is just a thief I believe and not doing much of importance (beyond her Masters of Destiny Appearances of course. Fun to see her meet Sabine Wren) The Nihil like Wreck Punk, though they are bad guys... It would definitely be something to see more of. Especially for a rebel cell, like the Cloud Riders maybe...
Wreckpunk is one of the few problems I have with THR. That whole thing plays into the weird 80s thing of depicting dangerous degenerates and thugs as listening to metal and punk. I'd like to the have some revolutionary anarchist rebels listening to the Star Wars equivalent of Crass and Conflict.
I have expected or hoped she'd be around in Season 1 since that's 5 BBY and was abandoned that year. So unless she was deliberately kept out of sight whenever Luthen was around, it's also possible she was abandoned by the time Saw and Luthen met on Segra Milo.
The last arc is supposed to lead directly into the beginning of Rogue One, in which the Rebels know a lot about her and launch a mission to bust her out of prison. Very plausible that she could show up, although I feel like they would have advertised that she was part of the cast, so my expectations are tempered.
I've said this before, but I feel like the visual style and the speaking style in all the Disney live-action SW stuff just feels way off from the original trilogy and prequels. Like, if what I was watching in this show was in book form, I wouldn't bat an eyelash at it, but somehow when they translate it to the screen it just ends up looking and sounding wrong. I don't get this from the animated shows though.
