Now I want a show taking place between ANH and ESB more than ever, but only if it's Gilroy and the Andor team. I want to see how they decided on Hoth, what Mon Mothma was up to pre-RotJ, the Bothans. A Rogue Squadron series would be excellent, especially with the Rogue One name connection.

Right there with you. I just have to hold out one more week... and decide if I'm going to re-re-re-watch Andor season 1 and 2 beforehand or save that marathon for this summer...

I think the good thing with SW is that it has so much depth that you can do something in any direction to try and hit certain markets.

Actually one of the qualities of Star Wars is, that it has layers. Sure, most people nowadays like to see it as “leave your brain with your coat and umbrella at the wardrobe please”, but Andor actually shows it can be taken a bit more serious as an observation on facism and instructional evil.

Well Tony Gilroy wont be coming back to Star Wars for long time. But Lucasfilm sounds like want more from Beau Willingman, maybe bring in others from the Andor team. So we could get a show with Mon Mothma and others between ANH and ESB but it wont be Tony Gilroy and his Andor team. I think this is a very special show.

If SW had just been just an escapist fantasy, I doubt we'd all be here 50 years later still discussing a sci fi movie. ANH, for all its simplicity compared with more current SW shows, still engaged the minds of its fans. I feel Andor is a direct result of considering the who, whats and whys introduced in ANH. Thoughts beyond how cool the Force is. Thoughts about what it takes to rebel against an Empire.

I don’t even know if Gilroy himself necessarily needs to come back if there was a rebellion sequel series. There are plenty of talented writers and directors for this sort of show, and now that he has established this “prestige”-type show can “work” in Star Wars I think Lucasfilm might be more willing to go this direction again.

Yes Tony Gilroy says he was the first one to take the first step for Star Wars to go in all different directions. And want a procedure show

Maybe a show with one of the most annoying TCW characters. Tan Divo, Tales of the Inept.

My read on first watch was that once the mining equipment starts to arrive, they are able to piece together the fact that this was what everything has been about from the beginning. Naturally, they become suspicious of their supposed man on the inside who failed to mention this most critical piece of information at any point in time. Syril for his part does nothing to allay their suspicions even though he truly didn’t know, partially because he’s in denial about the truth to himself as well, and partially because he actually is an imperial plant as they suspect, just one that thinks he’s on a different mission.

To be honest as well I think people need to go back and watch the OT again when talking about the setting, the tone of it for me is actually much closer to Andor than it is a lot of other SW content. I feel like the OT was quite unique in that ANH took a kind of gritty 70's style space cowboy setting and added a heroic story and then ESB/ROTJ took the emerging kind of entertainment blockbuster and shot in though with quite serious adult elements.

Filoni's work does I think take a bit more of the PT tone which is that much larger than life even covering some very grim events. Still though I think Mando style tone post OT and Andor style tone during/pre OT can both co exist pretty well.

I think he's shown theres both a market for it AND that such a show can also have some genuine weight to it. It need not be the case of "doing franchise work" for the money and then doing stuff you care about more on the side, you can do some of your best work as a SW series.

This reminds me of another sort of argumentative take to have on this - namely, whether it was ever “worth it” for the Empire to take the time to try and build up this facade of an insurgence that “needed to be put down” as an excuse to displace the Ghor, or if the Rebels properly responding successfully made all the ISB’s work effectively useless after the fact.

Krennic’s stated reason was trying to keep the Empire’s violent displacement of the Ghor from causing Galactic unrest, and what he wound up with was the Rebels getting their now publicly known leader calling out the Empire’s crud where they’ve compounded an atrocity with another atrocity… all in a story that ultimately will shortly end with the Empire losing all credibility because of what Tarkin will do with the Death Star (…which is, of course, it’s entire purpose.)

There’s even a question of whether encouraging an actual local resistance was even necessary for the purposes of creating an illusion of a more malevolent one, considering how much heavy lifting the Empire’s spin doctors were doing.

…Which all makes perfect sense as a commentary on the completely unnecessary, idiotic and psychologically monstrous extra element of fascism that was shown with the Nazis false flags against Poland.

I think Syril makes a very effective character as well, someone who was a "true believer" in the Empire as a needed source of stability having its monstrous nature revealed to him. Generally I'm very impressed by the degree of dramatic payoff this season has been able to create, I think the jumping forward each "block" has worked very effectively to achieve that were as actually maing 5 seasons would likely have stretched things out too far dramatically. It asks a little of the view in terms of plot but character(and politics) wise it works very well indeed for me.

I think you could argue that really the Empires game is always a bit of a holding action until the DS is ready at which point they think they can rule more though fear/threat which I think also helps to explain quite well how they end up facing what's ultimately quite a large rebel force since they lack this threat after ANH.

Thats part of why I think more Andor style content would be interesting into the OT as you arguably dealing with a very different and dynamic environment. What does life look like in the Empire post Senate dispanding? presumably some effort is made to try and sell whats happening to the public but its likely increasingly threadbare.

The tendency in the lore to project the Empire’s logistical strength to an almost absurd degree even by Star Wars standards actually makes sense in light of the idea that the Empire had been building its strength in comparative peacetime and tolerance form the Galaxy, but that post-Yavin it has to instead invest most of its manpower and fleet strength into constant occupation of all major (and even most minor) territories since even simple belligerent non-compliance could cause massive issues in the Empire’s suddenly constantly threatened supply chain given the sheer size of their forces.

Vader’s Death Squadron, the ominous “tip of the spear” in the Empire’s hunt for the Rebels, being a sort of modestly sized fleet given the resource edge the Empire should have, makes sense of its the most formidable force the Empire can “freely” deploy without risking turning their backs on enough worlds for Rebel forces to increase exponentially.

^ Yeah, that's the problem with tyrannical regimes. They have to be strong everywhere and all at the same time. Whenever and wherever they show weakness, that's where resistance begins. The rebels may be outmatched overall, but they can pick and choose where to fight and concentrate their strength on the enemy's weak point.
