The show turned out to literally be And/Or.

And they don't overcomplicate the stories either. They are well developed, interesting characters without over doing it.

It was the same with Skeleton Crew by the end. We had the answers to the questions...but they were not over blown with excessive minutiae.

I can get behind the concept of Star Wars branding.. like the ESB logo or the Tales of ... logo. And get away from the lead character name. Ahsoka is about more than just her. Should have given it a broader title that encompases the whole story. But in other cases like the Kenobi series it should be his name.

The show has this fairly unusual structure of four chapters separated by significant time jumps.
Even though I think that they pulled it off remarkably well, there are specific subplots that had to be sacrificed. And Mothma's relationship with her family is one of the examples. The other, in my opinion, is the tension between Luthen and Yavin, which was criminally under-developed, and also -as we already discussed extensively- Dedra's investigation.

Star Wars: Rebels was taken, unfortunately. :)
I understand the critique, but “criminally?” Come now, 3. That’s too much hyperbole for you.

^ Fair enough, perhaps I was indeed a bit hyperbolic.

Anyway, Luthen vs Yavin is an interesting topic that I wanted to discuss. What is your take on this? Naively, one would assume that a well organized rebel base would make Luthen proud.

What seems to have happened, based on the information given in the show, is that Luthen became laser-focused on revolutionary tactics, and lost sight of broader revolutionary strategy. He obsessed over the ISB, and extracting from it the most damaging possible information, as well as surgical but serious and violent attacks on critical Imperial nodes across the galaxy. And that the Rebel Alliance had a broader strategic goal that Luthen determined was too anodyne and risk-averse, and so broke with it, didn’t find it to be effective, and earned a reputation as a sharp critic of it, and even a danger to it. And so he wasn’t proud of the Alliance because he thought it was an ineffectual organization that might not be helping the cause at all.

Would I have liked to see this play out? Heck yeah. But I think they approached it, with subtext, quite elegantly in the end.

Ideologically, Luthen is closer to Saw than he is to Mon Mothma. It’s not hard to imagine how there would have been friction between the 2 groups even if he was glad an organized rebellion existed.

It's worse than that, Dedra. There are sequel trilogy fans out there. Your disgust is only beginning.

After watching Andor S1 and S2, I rewatched RO. One of things I hope future creators of SW notice, is that fan service can do a real disservice to the overall story and world building. I found the occasional bits of fan service in RO distracting and the lack of it is SC and Andor refreshing. Save it for shows like Ahsoka, and look to new parts of the GFFA to continue to show the excitement of SW.

Yeah while I do appreciate some light fan service here and there I think they should have toned it down a little in RO. I could have definitely gone without the Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba cameos, they were distractingly shoe-horned in. Probably could have gone without the Princess Leia cameo as well. However I did enjoy seeing the familiar pilots from the Battle of Yavin in the Battle of Scarif, as well as the death of the pilot with the Red 5 callsign. One could also argue that Vader's scenes were fan service, but I would also argue that they are the best scenes in the film.

The Vader scenes are played as an example of escalation, especially now with Andor - Dedra is small fish compared to Partagaz, who's small fish compared to Krennic, who's small fish compared to Tarkin... who's roughly equal to Vader, except Vader represents an escalation in the type of threat, because suddenly, instead of just being opposed by overwhelming logistical and technological might, its the ******* supernatural the Rebellion has to deal with as well.

Leia's more just connective tissue, and Evazan and Baba just scream "...Gen X really can't move past a single thing from ANH, can they?", but without the grace of Tarkin (... and overhyped character in the OT and Legends, in my opinion) where he's integrated into the imperial food chain right above Krennic without comment.

Vader just feels like he's the next step up the ladder even once Tarkin's on-screen.

    I agree.

I mean, Dr. Evazan's appearance went like:

    1. He appears.

    2. He snarls at Jyn Erso (repeating the same line that he makes to Luke later).

    3. Andor takes her away before he does something bad or whatever.

    4. And Dr. Evazan just... walks away? Continues walking the other way? The guy that started a fight with Luke Skywalker over literally nothing?

    Ehhhhhh

Yeah, I think it was just... silly. And honestly, the film is not that big on fan-service, but that bit there sticks out like a sore thumb.

Honestly, the worst offender (I'm sorry ST fans, I mean no offense by this) is The Force Awakens, imho, and The Rise of Skywalker (though the latter at least has "new lore" to sort-of make it stand out). I didn't like The Last Jedi either so nobody think I'm just taking Rian Johnson's side or anything like that at all. :p

Oh, and good to see you again, Force Smuggler.

Leia also underlined the driving force of the story, with her "hope" line, so I see her as more than just connective tissue. And narratively, she was the endpoint of a baton-passing that I found very effective. And it's no wonder that baton-passing is the thing fans reenact at every Star Wars Celebration.
