Agreed. I don't know if anyone noticed, but in AOTC in the droid factory, Anakin literally slices a Geonosian in half with his lightsaber. More than once I think...But I think generally people aren't bothered cos they're like insects. If he were to slice a human in half vertically like that, imagine the reaction we'd have-it would be similar to something we've seen in bloody horror movies...

Peter Jackson still had to avoid the use of "red" blood into order to avoid an R rating for the LOTR and TH films, even though those films were set in a fantasy world. So the MPAA seems to have gotten a bit more strict.

Also, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru were perfectly human, as were their brutally torched skeletons. I'm pretty sure that scene alone might have earned Episode IV an R or a strong PG-13, in today's market.

It’s funny, though, because here in the UK the entire OT and TPM are all rated U, which is actually lower than a PG. To put that into context all of the old Disney 2D animated movies are rated U. AOTC is a PG and ROTS is a 12 (the British equivalent to PG13).

Given the amount of heads rolling in Jackson's films, I can certainly understand them having to skirt using red blood.

I can understand why Lucas toned it down for the reason these films were marketed to all ages, but IV would be a PG-13. There's no cursing or nudity. (Man, I miss 70s filmmaking in so many ways.)

Every mainstream action blockbuster movie ever for the last 5 or more years has pretty much exactly been PG-13. I don't expect Star Wars to be any different. It's basically a rubber stamp at this point for the blockbuster films. PG is now basically entirely for animated family movies.

Also every single one of JJ Abrams movies = PG-13.

I am not hoping or thinking there ever will be an R-rated Star Wars movie but I would watch one, if only outta curiosity. How about a remake of Showgirls with Oola?

    Rated - R.

Apparently in a flashback we get to witness the moment the Solo offspring was conceived.

I'm pretty confident it'll be PG-13, for mainly the reasons listed above regarding most mainstream blockbusters. It allows the filmmakers some storytelling/action sequence breathing room, and seems to be a good middle ground for maximum audience appeal these days. Not too much for middleschool age kids to handle, not too uncool for teens to be seen showing up for, but adult enough for adults to enjoy.

PG-13 is a given. Edgy PG-13 (my favorite)... maybe. Sith could provide.

It isn't that Star Wars is a fantasy world, it is how the violence is presented - the lack of gore, blood and injured/dead is how Star Wars has maintained it age rating.

Yes, there is blood when we see Walrus Man's arm lying on the floor but it is a very quick image.

RotS's rating - I don't know how they got away with it :p

Assuming MakingStarWars ' rumour is true and assuming that JJ was trying to keep it under wraps as a big twist a la his infamous "John-Harrison-is-really-Khan" surprise, I wonder how our beloved director is feeling right now...

Then let's just hope there is something worth watching even if we know the entire plot and ending to the movie. A good movie does not rely on you not knowing the ending to make it enjoyable to the audience.

... and, yet, I can watch those films over and over and over, again.

But, I fast forward through the "I am your father" scene in Empire Strikes Back just like everybody else does once they've watched it once. Shock us once, Darth Vader, shame on you... shock us twice, shame on us...

That's the point. It's not about what is the plot twist, but the manner in which it was revealed. Which is why people can rewatch ESB or other good movies again and again.

The problem can become what has happened to Doctor Who whereby the show runner Steven Moffat has been so obsessed to have a "surprise" each and every year that he centers the entire series around it. Once back in 1982 there was a great surprise reveal which is one of the best in TV history. He loved that so much that he not only wanted to do that once but over and over again every season.

So the question becomes "What is this year's 'surprise' going to be?" It's get really silly to the point of parody as people are waiting for the "surprise."

JJ fell into that trap with STID. It's not that you should give all your secrets away but when simply a character that you know is going to appear is still held secret then it just gets foolish.

    http://www.mtv.com/news/1718246/jj-abrams-star-trek-into-darkness-regret/

“The truth is I think it probably would have been smarter just to say upfront ‘This is who it is.’ It was only trying to preserve the fun of it, and it might have given more time to acclimate and accept that’s what the thing was,” he said.
The idea to keep Khan on the D.L. apparently came from the studio, which, according to Abrams, didn’t want to give the impression that a comprehensive knowledge of “Star Trek” cannon was required in order to enjoy the latest installment.
“The truth is because it was so important to the studio that we not angle this thing for existing fans. If we said it was Khan, it would feel like you’ve really got to know what ‘Star Trek’ is about to see this movie,” he said. “That would have been limiting. I can understand their argument to try to keep that quiet, but I do wonder if it would have seemed a little bit less like an attempt at deception if we had just come out with it.”

Now presumably he has more say in this film and it's still 10 months to the premiere so it's not like right now is exactly the time to start giving things away but the real test will be what happens at Celebration and going forward from there.
