    yeah.

but still it's good they are deviating from 'good and evil' even if it's just a bit. 'morally grey' might seem like a 'trend' but not really. 'good vs. evil' only really allows for one type of story that reflects backwards cold war style thinking. well, I think star wars was better than that with the philosophy but in any case 'shades of grey' allows for more 'combinations' and a wider variety of storytelling you can do even if I get the temptation to pass it off as a 'trend'. it's really the logical thing to do for the st in the context of what we got in the ot and pt.

And if anything, JJ almost made it seem that Luke plays an important role in TFA, when he really doesn't have a role at all. By saying that he decided to take the job because of the question 'who is Luke Skywalker", it makes it seem as though we're going to find out that answer in TFA, when the truth is that we really won't. We will just catch a couple of glimpses of him...no way we are going to find out who Luke has become, unless the answer is simply, a hermit like Obi-wan and Yoda. :(

So it seems the EW article is beginning to prepare people for the possibility that Luke won't have much screentime in TFA, which fits exactly with what MSW has been reporting:

So TFA will possibly only focus on Luke's fate -- which I read as filling us in on what made Luke go "missing." And I think this also fits with the idea that we'll only see Luke at the very end. The film will leave us literally seeing the truth of Luke's fate.

As for the comment about "less" in regard to Luke, that's specifically asking what if we don't know as much about Luke as we thought we did:

So there are possibilities about Luke that we may not have considered. This is an interesting statement because it could refer to any number of possibilities.

At the very least, this article makes it clear that those who were saying that Luke would stop changing after ROTJ, that his identity was set in stone were clearly wrong.

I've argued for a long time now that experience changes people, and not always in a positive, progressive way. I don't think Luke will be evil, but I do think he'll be more complex and grey than many supposed. That's good because the essence of good art is defamiliarizing what we think we know.

I don't think anybody expected the same Luke after the whole he's "waiting" while there is war and Han dies and has been gone for 10+ years while there are problems in the Galaxy or that if it's his Academy that he would be unaffected by the murders.

I'm sure this has been said before, but after this EW article im certain.
When Snoke is saying: "There has been an awakening, have you felt it? The dark side, and the light." Snoke is talking to Kylo Ren about Luke Skywalkers awakening. Luke, after years of exil is a master of both the dark- and light side. Snoke can feel his presence - a disturbance in the force.

I recall people arguing incessantly that the "real Luke" wouldn't hide or fail to create a successful Jedi Order. That the Luke we got at the end of ROTJ was Luke as he will always be.

That anything else was "out of character" or "character assassination" if Luke was not ROTJ Luke, or even more ideal.

So anyone who claimed to know the real Luke was only ROTJ Luke were clearly wrong. :)

Many of us have been pointing out that 30 years is a long time and that there was never any necessity for Luke to always remain ROTJ Luke.

This article suggests that war distorts and changes people for the worse. I'm happy JJ is going for a more realistic Luke, and not the ideological fantasy of a hero who can never fail.

I don't think anyone will convince anybody of anything, the only thing that can convince anybody are each ST movie and that's all folks.:p

I'm looking forward in around 3 weeks for that Luke book which will be my first Journey book I read for those hints/clues.:)

    Kathleen: Who's Luke Skywalker
    JJ : (gets chills)

This says enough about how JJ thinks about the Luke character, he is(was?) an important figure in the Galaxy, what happened? Maybe TFA creates more questions then it answers, interesting. I see a broken Luke, tormented, still an incredible powerful mind but he can't handle/control his thoughts.
Yes, I can really see this working. Hopefully they pull this off in such a way that it complements Luke's (known) arc so far ^:)^

yeah not only is the luke stuff you posted good but kind of a good thing that star wars isn't straight up glamorising war eh?

"wars not make one great" or however he said it. could be accidental foreshadowing.

I have my problems with things concerning the Luke rumors but a changed/different Luke aren't them, I have even speculated numerous times about a different Luke, I would only have problems if we go for evil Luke.:p

but even changed Luke needs a good/logical explanation.

Yeah a broken Luke who overcomes all of this in the ST is fine for me, but the explanation why he is broken is very important. Only a failed academy with some dead students, doesn't make sense for a broken Luke in my opinion. [face_dunno]

It has to be a struggle to accept the extent of his own potential. Luke must be setting up mental barriers for himself and must be fearful of his own strength, because he knows that it is possible that he could fall to the dark side.

yes, this is what we speculated long ago, but it would be the traditional often used reason why a former hero is broken. But we may see how it plays out. ;)

have to say, I can't wait for the movie to come out to move on from speculation which are nothing but possibilities that can easily be wrong. And then more speculation for VIII and then IX, kinda tempts me to leave this forum after VII so I don't ever see or think about speculation.:p

I could see it. He would feel like he failed to protect them and/or to teach them to protect themselves. That he brought them to the training only for them to be slaughtered. That's a lot of guilt and that kind of guilt would eat at someone.

one thing I really hope to see is Luke having a plan even Yoda/Kenobi had them but this whole EW article, kinda makes me have doubts he has a plan or maybe I'm reading too much into it...[face_thinking]

Edit: the more I think about it the more it makes sense, Luke is hurt, he's balancing between light and dark. If the right people find him he will get more towards the light side, if he come's in contact with the wrong people he might turn to the dark side (and then all h... breaks loose).
