Im sure that TPTB will be trying to figure out what to do with 9, whilst at the same time also trying to figure out how they need to change 8 too, as obviously leia now has to be written out. Unless of course they recast or went digital.

But tbh I don't feel right discussing the ramifications for the sw films as its inignificant when compared to the ramifications for her family and friends.

It's difficult to speculate about IX without seeing VIII first.

The thing is: Leia surely was supposed to be alive at the end of VIII (in what state, we don't know), and it seems to be too late to change that, and I also think we should be able to see Carrie Fisher final performance as Leia Organa in all it's glory.

Now, if her role in IX was big and important (and that seems to be the case, given what Colin Trevorrow said in the past), I just can't see how Leia can simply pass away between movies (even though I still find the idea of funeral very emotional).

Leia is the mother of the villain, and she seems to be the one emotional link to his past life Kylo Ren can't break. She may be the heroine's mother (she already seems to be Rey's mother figure, at the very least, after that hug). She's the leader of the Resistance against the First Order, and, who knows, the de facto leader of the free galaxy after what happened to Hosnian Prime.

On the top of that, Leia Organa is the character who has symbolized hope and continuity in this franchise for almost 40 years now. All the Star Wars movies could be a story a very old Leia was telling to her grandchildren, or to a new generation who never knew the horrors of war and tyranny.

Personally, I think it's quite difficult to find a way for such an inconic character to just disappear after the second act of this trilogy. They can minimize her role as much as possible, so she'd appear only when absolutely needed. If they have to use CGI or old footage for that, I don't care, as long as Billie and Todd agree with.

Great post MattOrgana. Sums up my line of thinking too.

I kind of hate the idea of the film makers deciding that they have to "get rid" of Leia some how because Carrie is no longer with us. I think that's disrespectful to Carrie, who I'm sure would want Leia to go on. I'm not sure how I think it best for them to do it, but whatever they do, as long as it has the blessing of Carrie's family, then I'm all for it.

Short answer, of all the available options it's the one I'm most comfortable with. This way the story group/production team can kill Leia off-screen in whatever manner makes the most sense to them. If they bring Leia back for IX via unused footage, CGI and/or a body double, it'll just feel a little convoluted to me.

Now I could be wrong, I'm willing to grant that maybe they'll find a way to have Leia appear in IX that works fabulously. I'm just not convinced it won't feel forced and fake.

Sigh. It's times like this that I really wish Lucas had decided to do the ST earlier, like he had originally intended.

We could've had at least three movies featuring the Big 3 when they were still young enough to be presented as an active trio, united, and not in the pass-the-baton position.

I think of some of these franchises that either take long breaks between filming, or rely on older cast members, as if people don't naturally run into health crisis as they get to the ages that the Big 3 are now at.

Thankfully it usually works out. But it's always a risk to revolve a franchise around actors getting into their 60s and older.

In the case of Harrison, the oldest by far of the big 3, Han's death works out perfectly. He's in great shape for his age, but I imagine nobody wanted to even tempt having Han still alive and played by a Harrison pushing 80. Yet in the Indy franchise, and I say this as someone who wants Indy V with Harrison, Lucas, and now Disney, just continue on as if Harrison isn't an elderly man, as if time just stops for this actor.

Obviously Carrie was the youngest, so nobody probably really considered the possibility of this happening so soon. Still, Carrie herself said she wished they'd done this a decade ago. So many missed opportunities to see these wonderful actors, in their legendary roles, together.

I actually like the long span of time between trilogies. However over 30 years was pushing it. 15-20 would've been perfect.

Well I can definitely agree with that. I almost feel really horrible and evil even thinking about what they are going to do because we're talking about the passing of a real person with real families and friends. I should just stop for now.

I get that. In the immediate aftermath the last thing I cared about, or wanted to consider, is this relatively inconsequential SW stuff.

At this point I'm now turning my eye to Carrie's work, the context in which I know her. That personally brings me much comfort. When I speak of the outcomes of Leia, it's about wanting to see Carrie's work featured as best as it can be.

I want Leia because Carrie is alive through her in a way that I can still connect to.

Exactly. I think so many of us are protective of her work and legacy, and all of our minds are now racing with ideas.

She is far too crucial to the story, if not the central action, to be swept away with an "oh and she died." I believe the whole outline was done for this new trilogy. I would imagine director and writing team and all of production would sit down and say what can we change to still remain true to the imagined new trilogy as a whole while honoring Fisher. What footage do we have, what can be altered with the footage to make it a new outfit in a new environment, etc. what honors and celebrates both the character and performer? What can be accomplished with far away wide shots and a body double? They just used Alec's voice for "Rey." It's all speculation, but I'm sure these are the types of questions they will be doing very soon... With the utmost tact and respect to her legacy and family.

Wasn't there allegedly a whole scene between Leia and Maz at the resistance base? I think 1 second of this (Maz handing Leia Luke's lightsaber) can be seen in one of the TFA trailers. Anyway, I wonder what this entire scene entailed and if by chance some of this footage, or perhaps footage from Rey and Leia talking at the end of TFA (if there was originally additional dialog that was ultimately cut), could be used in 8 or 9 in some way. Even if it's a brief Force vision Rey or Luke has or something.

    Serious question here...

Is anyone avoiding watching SW films right now out of fear of crying at the sight of Leia this soon after Carrie's passing? That's me at the moment...

I am. I actually want to see ANH, but I'm afraid I'll start crying at the moment Leia appears.

I'm seriously thinking about waiting until Ep. VIII to go back to the saga movies.

I promise you I'll be over it by then. Although there is May the Fourth, Celebration, and all the Comic Cons between now and then that'll throw a reminder in our faces of who is no longer with us.

Me personally, no. I rarely watch any Star Wars films and I'm not avoiding watching them at the moment due to Carrie's passing.

I actually associate Carrie more these days with her non-SW stuff. And I have slowly been watching more of her panels, shows, interviews, and those are making me smile and realize that, in a way, she will always be here with us. I'm so, so grateful that she left a lot of herself behind across a very long span of time.

Honestly, not to be cold - I love Carrie, but Carrie in the CT is like a whole other person. I remember watching a James Bond audio commentary with Roger Moore, and he commented on himself and said the same thing.

I did at first. I always go to the Star Wars movies for comfort, but since Leia is the biggest of the 'Big Three' for me and she's also Carrie, it wasn't too comforting. I'm much better now with Star Wars, although I'm not looking forward to seeing her absent from Star Wars events this year. I'm hoping that Harrison won't be in the hype for VIII later this year, because that might make it easier to see VIII and Carrie's final Leia role. Anytime I see Harrison and Mark together I'm going to be missing Carrie.

This is the perfect answer. I suspect they'll use what they can, change what they can, use a body double here and there, use a bit of CGI, and overall it will work without altering the core of the originally planned narrative. They'll make it work while still honoring Carrie.

Yeah, I don't think I can watch anything for awhile... But I too have been watching her past year media appearances, but I would do that practically every day before anyway. But I had to put away any of the SW books or trinkets... It's too sad. But I did take the 78 doll out to bars on Friday. I do have most of her novels by my bedside table, but still hard to read any of the passages.

SW was always the Han and Leia chemistry for me, and I was worried about losing the Ford ingredient in ongoing films... So now I'm a thousand times disappointed.

Chewbacca Actor Mourns Carrie Fisher with Dallas Fans

Mayhew and his wife Angie told the crowd they were happy to join the fans to share memories with their longtime friend.

“She was a princess,” Mayhew said. “She can adapt to almost any situation and she did.

Mayhew told stories of his first time meeting Carrie on the Star Wars set and of their times together through the years.

Angie got laughs from the crowd as she remembered Fisher intensely interviewing her when she first married Peter; ultimately getting Fisher’s blessing and friendship.

I haven't had a chance to watch any SW since Carrie passed, but I look forward to it. I can see how it could be difficult, but to me it's a beautiful thing to be able to see an actor live on forever through their characters.

I always forget to mention it, but with the great debate about if Fisher could reprise Leia... I think of one great example. In Empire when she says the "And you're as good as gone, aren't you?" line... Her gaze meeting his, chin lowered, no nonsense. She does it again perfectly in Force Awakens after her one on one talk about their son. An officer calls her away, and Fisher does that half beat no nonsense gaze to Ford again before departing... It's completely Leia.

Disney realized this was a possibility hence the insurance policy. Star Wars is bigger than one person and the story must go on. She would have wanted it that way.
