Anyway as my Amazon still says "delivery around 28th of April", (I hope before of course) I feel like I'll come here after everything has already been discussed and miss all the discussion fun.

Oh, and about "The Swarm", the book was not really good, but I loved that quote of Thrawn about living under Imperial rule not being so bad. Reminds me of what Jyn Erso replied to Saw Guerrera in Rogue One when he asked her how she could stand living under the Imperial flag.

I’ve read The Swarm. It’s not so bad actually. Thrawn is being Thrawn in this book, except I can’t imagine he would condescend to talking to children like he did. But it’s a children book so whatever.
    I liked another quote:
"It occurs to me that there is a wild card in this sabacc deck, and I dislike wild cards.” This reminded me of the Bendu-factor in Zero Hour. Oh yes, Thrawn definitely dislikes wild cards. ;)

I'd have liked to have seen more novels that feature Thrawn in that kind of way (though obviously directed towards an older audience). Given the influences for the character, he works well straight up as a detective trying to use his keen intellect to unravel some kind of larger mystery. More mystery stories in general would be interesting to see within the GFFA.

Why not a Sherlock-Thrawn TV series :p (but I think people would have an overdose of Thrawn)[face_laugh]

Ok, just went to my local Waterstones to pass some time before cinema... And the book is sitting next to all the regular Star Wars books in the SciFi section!

Lost Stars does the same, with Tarkin, near the start.

Thrawn must have been angered an entire world of art was destroyed - Alderaan. The Arrandas are one of the few remaining Alderaanians. Thrawn will talk to them.

The more I think about the characterisation question - Thrawn is genuinely compatible with every version of himself we have seen, in my opinion, and then
they add to it. A positively brilliant and surprising layer to his story.

Yes, but in Tarkin's case it felt more natural.

So glad the initial reactions to this novel are very positive, I cannot wait for this book (as if I wasn't anticipating it enough already).

Well, Tarkin's not the sort to stand around with out a plan anyway. Also, I hope it get's reviewed in tomorrow's NY Times Book Section.

Alright Sinrebirth, here's I think a fairly innocent question.

One thing Rebels added to the Thrawn character is that, now, he's apparently very conscious of keeping in peak physical shape, and his tactical expertise extends to his self-defense as well (I got the impression from his fight with Mutton Chops that he was actively aiming to hit weak joints). I personally like the idea that Thrawn is not someone who specializes in or seeks out physical violence, but in a conflict can absolutely handle himself (a little bit of Robert Downey Jr Sherlock). Do we see any Kung Fu Thrawn in this book?

Thrawn is definitely involved in many a fray. It's not all posturing from the bridge.

I think Side Trip, Tatooine Ghost, and Outbound Flight laid the foundations for Kung-Fu Thrawn (In Side Trip, he goes undercover as the bounty hunter Jodo Kast, in Tatooine Ghost he disguises himself as one of his own stormtroopers, in Outbound Flight he leads a squad of his Chiss Troopers in a boarding action on the enemy vessel).

So in that respect, Rebels's scenes of Kung-Fu Thrawn, seem less of an addition, and more of a continuation.

Mist Encounter was basically Thrawn as John Rambo going all First Blood on the Imperials.

    Regarding the ranks:
Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral seem to be missing.

I don't recall anyone being specifically called out as having those ranks in this novel - which is why I left them out. Other sources do have them though.

    Regarding the ranks:
I'm also a bit surprised that we go from Lieutenant to Senior Lieutenant, since other sources like Adventures in Wild Space and the Visual Guide to Rogue One have established the existence of the rank of "Junior Lieutenant". I assume the Lieutenant in your list should in fact be read as Junior grade.

This will come in handy when I revamp my fanfiction into a proper serial.

Seems plausible. Same probably applies to the oldcanon rank of Junior Commander,

being roughly synonymous with Lieutenant Commander here, and "Commander" being roughly equivalent to Senior Commander. Captain as rank seems to be vastly lower than Captain as position - with Star Destroyers being commanded by Commanders, and only really small ships being commanded by Captains.

Yeah living under Imperial rule isn't bad at all. Until they blow up the planet you happen to be on.

That seems to be fairly compatible with some real world navies - the person in charge of the ship is the Captain of the ship, regardless of what other rank he might hold. As an example in SW, Thrawn was the captain of his flag ship (in Legends at least) but ALSO the Grand Admiral of the Imperial fleet as a whole. In the British navy at least the role of captain is not always synonymous with the rank of Captain.
