By your own standards, the site you're using to back up WikiLeak's credibility is, in itself, not credible.

    A credible source:

A source whose material is researched and written by experts with advanced degrees in their respective fields, whose work has been peer-reviewed by other experts with advanced degrees in their fields. Newspapers and magazines with a presence older than the World Wide Web count, as the articles in their publications go through several editorial reviews (by editors with bachelors or masters degrees) prior to publication. Encyclopedias and databases which can be found on a public library’s website are also credible, as their material has been thoroughly vetted. The academic journals themselves, which can be found using scholar.google.com , are also credible.

“A large following” does not in any way indicate that the person is not a basement dweller making stuff up, or that the person knows at all what he or she is talking about.

On a lighter note, this old SNL skit is perfect for this thread:

Pretty sure if there were any original thoughts we'd be immersed in wondrous, intricately detailed plots about time traveling martians attempting to control the US government using their dreaded epsilon rays (two steps beyond gamma). The men in black that are always seen at every major incident would be their chronoton shadows, burnt out remnants of fleeting wisps of spacetime left hanging in the air as they quickly abandoned a scene. The only hope for humanity would unfortunately rest in a tenuous alliance with the undersea kingdom of Xulima and their terror-inspiring crack dolphin suicide squads.

Instead we've got more thrice reheated bland garbage than a Burger King at 9 PM.

Nope, none of those are reliable, except for Newsweek, which told a story of some evil nut job using Satan as an excuse for his being an evil nut job., and the New York Times, which told another story about evil nut jobs using Satan as an excuse for being evil nut jobs.

Daily Mail is the UK equivalent of the National Enquirer or Star.

At least three blogs? Really? You realize any idiot with a computer can start a blog, right?

And “girls just wanna have guns”? “Satanic panic news”? [face_laugh]

No. If you are really interested in knowing what a credible source is, read what I posted in post #303 in this thread. It’s exactly the same information that I give fourth and fifth graders that I work with, and they understand it, and don’t try to cite “but this guy has this many followers” as an argument. Given that you are old enough to register here, you are older than they are.

“Number of people watching” is not credibility any more than number of people following on social media.

Expertise is credibility. Having actually studied a subject and gotten a degree or other credential in the subject is credibility.

You have put yourself forth in this thread as the passenger in the cartoon who would say that the pilot is too “out of touch” and the passengers should be able to fly the plane.

What you are doing when selecting your “sources” is called “confirmation bias.” Google that one.

I’ve been as patient as I can be with you. You would fail fifth grade where I work if you tried to cite those “sources” in any classroom.

Tucker Carlson has a BA in history and Laura Ingraham has a JD, you are correct. (Those are the only two I looked up; I had some respect for William F. Buckley back in the day, although I never agreed with him.) That said though, I’d rather watch Rachel Maddow, who has a PhD, or Joe Scarborough, who also has a JD.

If you want to get all of your information from Fox News, have at it, but you might want to present the credentials of their anchors as opposed to the number of viewers when citing their credibility.

Your other “sources”, however, remain “random people post crap on the Internet” sources, and Fox News was not one of the ones you listed in your Satanic conspiracy theory posts.

You might want to read some newspapers that existed prior to the Internet, even if the Wall Street Journal is the only one you’re willing to read.

I'm honestly trying to stay out of the thread and using a 1-on-1 approach talking with him.

What I mean is that people put a lot of stock in people with many followers. Celebrities are notorious for the fact that since they have many followers they can use their status to influence opinion when in fact they're just being used as a tool for their employers and don't think against the status quo as that would be taboo. Not to mention that they're out of touch with mainstream reality until they're no longer famous which they can't handle having a "normal" life. I understand having a platform, things you believe in, etc. But problem is they feel with their game they can say no wrong. (Although I know some have differing opinions on what they say really but keep their views silent). Sad really.

But tl;dr, for example if Ariana Grande said birds don't fly they fart to jump high without any facts or proof just because she says it doesn't mean it's true. Dalai Lama, pastors, motivational speakers, etc have many views on a video, but they fail in views to the latest music video from whatever pop band.

Even people with many degrees can be wrong. That's why things get vetted. Newspapers and news organizations can be notoriously wrong and have to change their articles based on when it gets brought up to them.

Things must be checked, sorted and vetted with a fine tooth comb. It can't be just 1 person saying it without facts. So don't get caught up on someone with many followers saying something is and it's not true. "Drink the koolaid" is an example that comes to mind.

Yes, people with degrees can be wrong, which is why the vetting process—and in academia, the peer review process—exists. Thank you for bringing that up.

And the ability to form a thoroughly researched opinion is not limited to people with degrees.

It is, however, limited to people who do not believe everything that pops up in a Google search.
