    Who are the Kharadron Overlords? Just why is their new battletome so awesome? And what does that new guy do? In today’s Faction Focus, we’re going to answer all of these questions – and more.

    Who are the Kharadron Overlords?
    Duardin are doughty, short humanoids, known for their stubborn nature, fine craftsmanship and iron discipline. Once a single united race, the duardin were fractured by time and scattered across the Mortal Realms. Some duardin dwell in the Cities of Sigmar. Others worship Grimnir, and wield the primal power of fire. And then there are the Kharadron Overlords.

    Driven to the skies in the Age of Chaos, the Kharadron Overlords created a technologically advanced empire in the clouds. By leveraging the substance known as aether-gold, they have developed incredible skyvessels, innumerable scientific discoveries and utterly deadly weaponry.

    The culture of the Kharadron Overlords is mercantile, meritocratic and pragmatic. They’re notorious for their moral flexibility – it is not for nothing that the Dispossessed say “Never sign a Kharadron writ without reading it ten thousand times.”

    Aether-gold Shares
    The first big, shiny, thematic change to the Kharadron Overlords is the aether-gold system. Aether-gold is miraculous stuff, much more useful than conventional gold, capable of being applied to all manner of industrial and military purposes.

    In battle, this is represented by each Kharadron Overlords Hero, skyvessel and unit with more than 10 models starting the battle with a share of aether-gold. Once per phase, any 1 unit from your army can tap into their aether-gold shares. In exchange for their sacrifice of profit, they’ll get to use a triumph – a powerful one-time enhancement usually only available to armies in matched play games that are smaller than their rivals.

    In practice, this makes your Kharadron Overlords incredibly adaptable. Any unit with a share of aether-gold is a threat, and any triumph you use will have a massive effect. From re-rolling to wound during key shooting attacks, to re-rolls to save for desperate defences, every triumph has a place – and lets every Kharadron Overlords unit perform when the chips are down!

    The Kharadron Code
    All Kharadron Overlords live their life according to the Kharadron Code – a vast and ever-evolving set of principles that cover trade, warfare and beyond. However, the Kharadron are cannier than most duardin, and each sky-port has its own interpretation of the Code.

    In the game, you can represent this by picking your own interpretation of the Code, choosing a guiding Artycle, Amendment and Footnote, letting you tailor your army even further.

    Sub-factions
    The Kharadron Overlords were one of the first Warhammer Age of Sigmar armies to have their own sub-factions. Representing the Kharadron Overlords’ most famous (and infamous) nations, each sky-port offers new ways to play your army with their own abilities, versions of the Kharadron Code, command traits and artefacts. Take Barak-Zon – with Deeds Not Words, they’re the deadliest melee fighters among the Kharadron Overlords, turning an army usually known for its shooting into a savagely effective force on the charge.

    Barak-Zilfin forces, on the other hand, can take gun-laden Arkanaut Frigates as their Battleline choice, meaning you can pack more of these massive skyvessels into your army than anyone else!

    One of the most flexible sky-ports is Barak-Thryng. Forces dedicated to the City of the Ancestors are allowed to include Duardin from other armies in their force. Need a point held? A big brick of Hearthguard Berzerkers will do the trick! Struggling with enemy Wizards? Why not throw in a Runelord? Whatever kind of Kharadron Overlords army you want to play, chances are, it’s represented in Battletome: Kharadron Overlords.

    Big Warscroll Changes
    Some of the most exciting news for Kharadron Overlords can be found in their updated Warscrolls. While you’ll have to wait until next week to see these for yourself, there are some really big changes you won’t want to miss. Skyvessels have been tweaked considerably. Now, units embarked upon them count as a garrison. In practice, this allows you to shoot out of your skyvessels as you fly by or repel boarders in melee.

    What’s more, Kharadron Overlords skyvessels now all possess the Fly High rule, which allows them to disengage and redeploy to the battlefield, giving Kharadron Overlords forces a control of the battlefield unmatched by any other faction. Your ships will be impossible to lock down in close combat, while objectives will be yours to seize.

    Grundstok Thunderers, meanwhile, have been streamlined and up-gunned, and are a particularly terrifying unit to face in melee thanks to their new Drive Them Back! Rule, which offers an additional attack against enemies in melee range.

    The battletome, of course, features a brand-new warscroll, covering the Endrinmaster with Dirigible Suit. Like his ground-based counterpart, this Endrinmaster is great for keeping your skyvessels in fighting shape, but is fast enough to keep pace with them while bombarding foes with a barrage of aethermatic fire.
