I was writing something from the perspective of Coruscant, under Disney, and I realised just how awful this is. I am going to shamelessly plug something, but you get my point.

    Coruscant.

The scintillating jewel at the heart of the galaxy.

    Well.

    Former, anyway.

Since the fall of the Empire, the once-capital of the galaxy had fallen hard, notwithstanding that it was among the first worlds to rise up against the Empire after Endor, and that it fought a year long civil war without any aide from the New Republic, which didn't care to help the world which had oppressed the galaxy free itself from it's own oppressors.

In some ways, the Rebels forgot that the first world to be taken by Palpatine was Coruscant.

That they were lied to, fed a relentless tide of fear via the news of the Clone Wars, a terror which saw the people abandon right after liberty after choice in favour of some phantom spectre of security. They had been manipulated for thirteen years by the then-Chancellor.. how could they have not embraced the tales of the Jedi Rebellion? How could you expect them to refuse to grant unlimited power to the man who had, by all accounts, saved them from the genocidal General Grievous, the depredations of Dooku, or the terror attacks masterminded by Admiral Trench?

And when they rose up, finally having realised the truth?

    Nothing.

They were abandoned, while the New Republic freed the rest of the galaxy.

The Battle of Jakku didn't save Coruscant... the end of the war simply condemned it.

For a time, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda ruled a rump Imperial state, with no powers to speak of; no notable military presence, no trade deals, no reparations... nothing. The criminals, well, they moved in with glee to ravage those hundreds of millions trapped on-world, and in short order the old capital became a failed state. By the time the New Republic Centrist Party, and later the First Order, offered to restore the world to glory, Coruscant welcomed the chance. Their teenagers joined the hungry military machine of Snoke in droves. On Coruscant, Hux and Phasma didn't need to steal children; they were handed over, with joy and tears.

Much like everyone else, the people of Coruscant grew to regret their decision, especially when Hosnian Prime was destroyed.

This wasn't Order, this was blind rage, given shape by madmen like Kylo Ren and Armitage Hux.

So when word spread that galaxy was in uprising, Coruscant too joined the fray, much as it did thirty-one years ago.

But the First Order was ready.

    They had been preparing.

For a year, they had worked the galaxies industries to create a second Mega-class dreadnought, of the same design of the Supremacy, capable of being both command centre, battleship, and shipyard all in one.

    It arrived.

Coruscant fell as quickly as it rose.

    The Supremacy was reborn.

    Coming 2021.

    https://boards.theforce.net/threads/the-road-to-episode-x-duel-of-the-fates.50054974/

How awful is it that Coruscant rises up against the Empire, just like everyone else, and the New Republic lets it burn. They literally abandon a trillion citizens (or whatever number Canon settles on), and then disarm the place and walk off.

I watch Captain America and get reminded that Germany was the first country the Nazi's took over. I read Aftermath and get reminded that Coruscant is never redeemed.

    It's just a thought.

    Great post!

Coruscant in Legends was problematic to retake and control for the New Republic too and cost it a lot of ressources that stalled the war and toppling of the Imperial Remnants prolonging the conflict quite some years or decades.

Canon took the other approach. By ignoring Coruscant the New Republic could fuel ressources to taking the rest of the galaxy and even patrol the Rim (as in Mandalorian). That ended the war way quicker, even post Jakku it allowed for a much quicker weeding out of Imperial holdouts that did not agree to the peace accords.

The thing is too, Coruscant is mostly indifferent to the wars and has many Imperial supporters. The New Republic should still free it for the minoroties alone, be it aliens or otherwise on Coruscant. But as Palpatine ignored some Rebel safe worlds like Lothal, Mon Mothma seems to copy his modus operandi and ignore some Imperial worlds like Coruscant. Worlds they deemed to costly to take and keep, and worlds they might use to have their enemies regroup and fall back there so they can take them all in one go should they do that.

Maybe the peace deals with Amedda entailed that people are allowed to leave if they want to and in return the New Republic leaves Coruscant be?

Anyway it was a NR member as a Centrist stronghold in 28ABY before the First Order separated with it. So I wonder when and how it joined up despite staying centrist always.

Hey, Palpatine threw Vader, the Grand Inquisitoir, Tarkin, Thrawn, Yularen and a number of other Admirals and ace pilots and intelligence personel at the Lothal problem. They did their very best, it just wasn't good enough.

To be honest, Coruscant's liberation would've been MY first priority. Take the capital in chaos with an uprising and Imperial factions vying for power (which is unusual that Moffs and Admirals and Council Members wouldn't have personal fleets already fighting it out for control of the capital) and annihilating each other. The Alliance/NR forces then sweep in and take or capture a multitude of ships and then convince the surface forces to surrender for without their fleet they are nothing. Jakku to me was disappointing. A final stand or a surprise attack on the Imperial capital would've made a better impact.

Apparently it was naval forces loyal to the ISB who blockaded Coruscant, but we also know Rax controlled the Palace.

With his stealthy crippling of various Imperial Remnants, it seems we can blame Rax for Coruscant as well.

I do like Jakku, though its a very odd place for a final stand. But then again, Palpatine intended to blow the planet and destroy the Empire and New Republic fleets originally. He would hardly have blown up Coruscant to achieve that.

Rax didn't lay out the terms for the Galactic Concorance though. "Even still, [Mas Amedda] is granted a provisional (and powerless) government on Coruscant, left with New Republic overseers who help confirm that he remains as little more than a figurehead, continuing his toothless rule over a troubled world."

Like, there are actually people in the New Republic that specifically have the job of ensuring Amedda continues to be unable to address the troubles that plague Coruscant. The planet is made to suffer for the crime of being the capital of the Old Republic when it fell.

By the way, what about a short story anthology about Coruscant. Something like Coruscant throughout the ages? From prehistory to the time of the ST and beyond.

Can't say how much i would looove to read something like that.

I wonder if Coruscant will form a rump FO state? Or some other new threat. Given the NR hung them out to dry and then left them to die. Or will it go the way of Zakuul.

Actually upon further thought I think there is a situation like this in real life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_Uprising

With the NR playing the Role of Soviet Russia. Which does not bode well for future Coruscantie views on the NR.

It's a point, in both matters.

Coruscant is an interesting loose end.

I don't know if the FO was long-lived enough on the galactic stage for Coruscant to see how bad it was.

    But then again; Hosnian Prime.

Hmm... do I sense the makings of a potential Eighteenth Alsakan Conflict? With both Alsaka and Coruscant creating their own power bases, each seeking to influence the rebuilding of galactic society to their own ideals?

Actually the neglection of Coruscant is what saved it... or else it would have been Hosnian Prime... they should thank the New Republic :p

I wonder how Metellos is thriving next to Coruscant ever since its fall though!

A very interesting premise. But, with Sidious and Kylo Ren both dead, whose going to take possession of the former Jedi Temple? Every Empire needs some sort of Dark Side Master behind it. Perhaps a certain former Inquisitor? One whom everyone believes to be dead......

    In the game, @Vialco?

    Well as you asked...

    STAR WARS

    EPISODE X

    DUEL OF THE FATES

The iron grip of the FIRST ORDER has spread to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Only a few scattered planets remain unoccupied. Traitorous acts are punishable by death. In order to suffocate the unrest that defeated EMPEROR PALPATINE, the mysterious SUPREME LEADER has silenced all communication between neighbouring systems. Led by POE DAMERON, the Resistance has planned a secret mission to prevent their annihilation and forge a path to freedom...

A rich tapestry of stars, reaching beyond all we know.

A world, surrounded by a dock.

    Kuat.

Two sharp points of a space station enclose us as we drift backwards into the glowing rectangular entrance of a docking bay.

A First Order transport, a TIE Marauder, touches down; a wide platform descends, revealing a variety of droids.

A black-grey BB unit carefully splits off from the group.

The graphite BB unit swerves to avoid all manner of labour droids, scraping BB's spherical side against the wall. His head tilts down, checking a scuff in his paint, revealing orange beneath. It's BB-8, deep undercover.

He lets out his almost signature 'uh-oh' beep and rotates the orange scuff beneath his head.

    ---
Coruscant, the First Order Capitol War Room

A clawed hand reaches into a silver tureen of baby shaaks, huddling together for warmth. We follow the squealing animal into the mouth of Lord Gherlid, a nonhuman with razor teeth that ruled much of the northern quadrant.

He sits at a table of Galactic Warlords - tribal, wealthy, coated in elaborate robes and stolen jewels.

Chancellor Hux speaks to them, nostrils flared at the smell. Nine years ago, he wouldn't have had to put up with these... aliens. But then again, without them, taking advantage of the chaos caused by the galactic uprising against the return of Emperor Palpatine, there would not have been a First Order left. It had been ridiculous to assume that all of the galaxies' species would unite behind a single call from Lando Calrissian. As many took advantage of the chaos, carving out fiefdoms in those difficult early days, only to find the First Order was not dead, merely humbled...

"I assure you," he continued. "The stolen Destroyer will be found. Our probe droids are scouring the galaxy as we speak."

Lord Gherlid, his mouth full, burped. "A Dreadnought just slipped through your fingers, Hux. Your words don't inspire confidence."

"A lone signal won't be difficult to fine," Hux said stiffly. "Our transmissions blockade has silenced millions of systems." Of course it had, and it was the main reason why the First Order had managed to retain supremacy - with communication cut, the galaxy had no way to even speak to each other. The First Order knew how to fight without the HoloNet, having spent decades in the Unknown Regions without such a thing. The ill-coordinated, hopeful masses? Not so much.

"You can silence planets, not people. There have been uprisings. We must not allow the seeds of revolution to take root." Gherlid huffed, and Hux responded swiftly, expecting as much, and looking to leverage this into an advantage.

"The First Order will punish those who defy your rule. Submit your youth for conditioning. They will teach their elders the rule of law."

Jor Nult, a nasty-looking dreadlocked Weequay - the Hutt representative - wagged a finger. "Its Skywalker they believe in, not the law. She's become a symbol of hope."

Raykar Shen, the Harch representative - a spider-like offshoot of the Aqualish, that ruled whole sectors of the Outer Rim. "The people believe she will destroy you, Hux - and your Master."

He seethed, remembering the voice of the man who had spoken to him in the days after Exegol, who had taken command of his successes, and returned Hux to being only the second most powerful person in the galaxy. Palpatine, Pryde, all of the other First Order leaders, dead.

But not him. Hux sneered at Shen.

"Kylo Ren is no Master, certainly not mine."

    ---
Welcome to Star Wars: Episode X: Duel of the Fates

Nine years have passed since Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

The galaxy may not look like what you expected.

The armada that went to Exegol, yes, it thrashed the Final Order, and decapitated the leadership of the First Order. Uprisings on Endor, Corellia, Jakku, Thyferra, Coruscant, Kuat, Lothal, Tatooine - they all happened, yes.

But that wasn't the end of things.

Chaos bred opportunity, and the First Order was given a chance - a chance to deploy what they had spent a year preparing - a complete communications black-out. Within days of the Battle of Exegol, the armada scattered, returning to defend homeworlds that were now isolated and exposed prey.

But that lack of galactic community... the inability the galaxy had to speak... it didn't stop the whispers of hope; of the story of Rey spreading...

Nor the rumour that Kylo Ren was not dead.

In nine years, the Supreme Leader has not been seen by the galaxy at large...

    Until now.

    ;)

    That's the opening post. Shhhh.

Counter Point, Alderaan, people still supported the Empire even after that, if they already resented the NR due to their actions would be easier for more people to stay in the FO.

That and just net setting up the Capital of the NR on Coruscant helped too.

I remember that was one of the big deals in The Thrawn Trilogy was how Luke felt really uncomfortable being on Coruscant and setting up shop in the former Imperial Palace.

Canon took a different approach by trying to make a more fair Republic even giving some importance to Mid-Rim world instead of having it be Core-Centric.

Well for one thing the Canon New Republic had a lot longer era of peace.

The Legends New Republic had powerful warlords like Zsing, Thrawn Palpatine who came back 5 years later after Endor and not 30, the Imperial Remnant then the Yuzong Vong and a whole bunch of other crisis.

The Canon New Republic while probably having smaller crisis didn't have any major wars until the First Order showed up 30 years later.

I would say the institution was weaker, but the galaxy itself was stronger.

Conversely, the government was stronger in Legends, yes, but the galaxy a great deal weaker.

In Canon, the military is largely disbanded in favour of sector-level fleets, and those are what overthrow the First Order a year after the New Republic fell.

In Legends, the galaxy falls to near-Civil War, alien invasion, and then an actual Civil War, because of how much control the Federal government seemingly held over what little fleet assets the galaxy had, and then their attempts thereafter to impose controls over the galaxy.

There's probably a message here somewhere, but I'm not smart enough to identify it.

Also it makes me wonder if in Canon there's going to be a move away from galaxy-wide governments to a more feudal set-up. Probably not but I think it could be interesting.

The thing is... I can't necessarily criticise the New Republic being more centralised in Legends. It carried on the war with the Empire for a lot longer, and it retaliated several times in major campaigns under Thrawn, the Clone Emperor, Daala and Pellaeon respectively; no give to discuss disarmament when somebody rocks up with a plan for galactic conquest every few years. They have mop-up with the Second Imperium, Diversity Alliance and Black Sun for another six years, and just as they discuss disarmament again, the Yuuzhan Vong show-up. The GA naturally comes out with a set of member states that are armed to the teeth, and as the GA starts the sensitive work of convincing the Corellians, Bothans and so on to disarm, a Sith turns up with no other plan than let's see it burn with the caveat that she doesn't even care if she lives to see her work play out... and then Daala is in-charge.

I reckon the New Republic de-centralisation was best, but the Canon version went way too far. We didn't even need to know who the Chancellor was in later years because they were utterly redundant. If the Yuuzhan Vong, a Sith, or the Empire had got it's act together and counter-attacked, the Canon Senate would have spent even longer arguing about it than it did in Legends... but then again the galactic community would have seemingly just rolled it's collective eyes and put down the threat... possibly even quicker than the Legends New Republic, judging how resoundingly the galaxy smashed the Sith Eternal armada.
