Maybe not today or tomorrow, but we need to start somewhere. And the first thing that needs to be done is that we need to stop being afraid of offending Republicans. We need to attack Republicans and constantly remind swing voters who is causing the problems in this country. Once Republicans are removed from power in Congress and state legislatures, change can happen.

Start? We've been fighting for it for over a decade.

And none of us are afraid of offending Republicans.

Really? Is that why we're still proposing these milquetoast solutions and half-measures, and refusing to call out Republicans for the liars and partisan hacks that they are?

Definitely need to stop being afraid of offending Republicans, but more importantly, stop trying to ween them over.

I'm also really sick of swing voters. Who are these people? They seem to wafer back and forth, each election cycle, voting for whomever they want to have a beer with. They seem mostly fine with the status quo, and just get sick of whomever is in power. I'm done with the 3% of the population that can't stick with something. It tells me they don't really care either way.

How about dig deep and find out why 33% of the country doesn't vote at all. What to do they want? Clearly some just aren't interested and do not give 2 ****s, but maybe there's more than 3% who don't feel represented and that's why they sit out.

The Dems need to aim for something other than ... 'how can we get Republicans to vote for us'. And that's all they really seem interested in lately. I'm tired of the leadership, who just seem to want to cling to their caucus power at all costs. All the big ideas are dead. They're afraid to go after healthcare. Reforms. Or anything that makes them seem like 'leftists', instead of the centrists that they are. And they're so afraid of the leftist label that they'll do 'nothing' to prove it. And anything that is put forward is always insecure, pared down, half measures that 'kick in' sometime in the future or some ****.

That just means it's all the more important to attack and discredit Republicans. Swing voters don't pay attention to politics, so that's why you just have to go with a very simple "Republicans are bad" message. Since swing voters don't care about policy substance, Democrats should just go left with policy, which wins over the progressive base...and use messaging to win over everyone else. That's your winning coalition right there. In fact this is what Republicans do, just in the opposite direction.

See, I don't think that's a broad coalition at all. It's unstable. You get the few swing voters this round, and then they swing against you next time. How can you get anything done with that. And all it teaches the Dem Leadership is, is that they should aim for the right-center, just to get the few in the middle, just to win, and then you'll end up with maybe a majority of 1 single vote, and nothing will ever change. It'll teach them to steer as far away from 'leftist' policy ideas as possible, because they wouldn't want to scare the tepid swing voter.

And that's exactly where we are right now. Add in GOP Voter Fraud schemes, and what have you, and we're gonna need more than 1.5-3% uncaring, barely political, noncommittal swing voters to save us.

We need more than "Republicans are bad". We need to be more than "At least we're not those guys". We need solid ideas. Vision. Change. And I have no idea how that happens. But it can't just be "appeal to the swing voter".

How many of the numerous school kids killed in all of your mass shootings are the children of senior Republican legislators?

I think it’s safe to say that the GOP and its followers are happy for other people’s children to die so that America remains free.

@DarkGingerJedi That is because they vote with what their bank statement is at that moment every single time and/or their taxes. Never do they pay attention to anything else. They will gladly lets their sons, daughters, grandkids, nieces, nephews, godchildren etc playing Russian Roulette at school if the Republicans promise a few more dollars in their pockets even though long term that never works out anyway as the GOP believes in cheap money which always crashes. And while I agree we need more bold vision from the Democrats, we also more who have a spine. What Beto this week should every Democrat all the time. Confront them, challenge them, put them on the defensive them to the point they are running for the hills like that UK reporter did with Ted Cruz this week. Ditto our "mainstream press' who by next week will drop this issue like they always do.

@LostOnHoth But it isn't free which is the most ironic and pathetic part that the GOP never understands. It's one of the least countries in the develop world, perhaps the least free but that is a topic for another thread.

@Jedi Knight Fett I fully expect more over the weekend. And it will never end ever because this is not satire:

Got hand it to the GOP. They will find whatever scapegoat they can no matter how stupid, incorrect and insane it is and keep saying it over and over again until enough people go, "yeah the problem isn't the guns....it's doors!"

Yeah, they know what they're saying is stupid and unworkable. They're not engaging in good faith. The whole point is to steer the conversation into absurdity until the outrage subsides.

Why would this be unstable? If you can get swing voters on your side, and keep them there...well that by definition would be stable.

And attacking Republicans actually allows Democrats to move left. Like I said, swing voters won't care about policy substance. What's important is how you package it, how you frame the issue, the words you use to describe it. This is why Republicans spend all their time trying to label Democrats as a bunch of crazy radicals...if you don't refute this, how do you expect to get people to support you?

I’m sure there is a “but they made me” defense there somewhere, as in ‘woke people make men mad so they have no choice but commit mass shootings’.

The Guardian - People in homes with handguns more likely to be killed, major study finds (April 2022)
Researchers find ‘zero evidence’ that living in a home with a handgun offers protection against homicide, with women at particular risk

You're more likely to use the gun on yourself or have your gun used against you than using it to protect yourself.

Real life isn't fiction of the writers of Hollywood, books, and video games. Despite the firearm supremacists railing against the purveyors of the arts they are the ones that think how guns are used in them are the same as what happens in practicality in the actual world.

I don't know who "we" here is supposed to be. But most are doing what you're saying we should do. Also, Democrats like Manchin are as good as a Republican on this, and winning additional seats from Republicans means they're more likely to be more like Manchin.
