I wonder if it might have been the semi-surreal for LFL existence of a writer's room, clear and substantial plot arcs, and how conventionally (from a film-maker's perspective) the production process was; that in comparison to LFL's usual production process and practices under Disney, Gilroy left such an impression of "grown up Hollywood" that it sort of silenced any doubters within the executive rooms at leats long enough to get the series to air.

Or maybe he just really impressed them with his "mercenary but artistic" approach to reshoots of Rogue One; being a non-Star Wars fan who still seemed to get the purpose of various aspects that Edwards, Abrams, and others had struggled with.

You can't be serious. I won't deny there were definitely high points to her tenure, but there were real issues with it as well.

He's also the son of a Pulitzer Prize winner, and the apple didn't fall far from the tree. His being involved with Star Wars is outside of his wheelhouse, and almost an accident. I think "grown up Hollywood" is a good way to put it. He's not a "nerd" and doesn't write that way.

He writes like a nerd… who read history, phsychology, and military books.

Nerdy for him is “The political patron has to find a way to launder the money she’s sending insurgent forces against her own government,” or “The most frustrating things about fascists is that they’re incompetent and petty little losers, and people should be reminded of that.” Or “people need to be psychologically pushed into rebellion, and simple mercenary reasons and rhetoric aren’t going to be enough.”

The closest to it we might get in other stuff is Migs Mayfeld voicing a pseudo-nhlostic philosophy about the Galaxy that then runs screaming into the petty, minor officer who traumatized him and disproves his entire philosophy with a casual and unintentional guess that triggers him… and even that’s pushing it.

Out of the suggestions in this article I would be fine with Filoni and Favreau together or Filoni with a more experienced executive. I don’t know much about the others except J.J. Abrams and that’s probably not a good idea.

Don't worry; I think the least likely on that list is Abrams.

What I mean by "nerd" is fanservice. He doesn't approach writing with questions like...

    1. How many cameos can I fit into each episode?
    2. What kind of new force powers can I show?
    3. What kind of new lightsaber design or color can I have?
    4. How many throwback lines of dialogue can I get away with?
    5. How much nostalgia is possible?
    6. How much can I wink at the audience without spraining an eyelid?

J.J. Abrams: Abrams directed the wildly successful Star Wars relaunch The Force Awakens but also its lambasted entry, The Rise of Skywalker. He clearly has an affinity for the brand and, with Bad Robot, managed a small media empire. But he and Bad Robot have hit a rough and unproductive patch, and the filmmaker is only now getting ready to shoot his first movie since Skywalker. But that could be because of the blaster stun from his Star Wars experience, which proved harrowing. “I don’t see him coming back to that toxic cesspool,” says one insider. “It definitely left a mark on him.”

Basically what it is saying is that when plans are made to step down it will be announced
and to not believe these social media people.

She likely is going to retire within the next couple years but doesn't sound like plans are made for it yet.

I heard a rumor that Rogue Squadron is going to release in 2026, on the 40th anniversary of the original Top Gun.

Yeah, it's a rumor I started, so what's your point?

Thats the most likely outcome i say. It does not have to be big name, but rather come from within the company. And some people still do not understand that the job is not a creative one. Hiring and spotting talent, yes. Reading scripts yes. But most of the job is about dealing with Disney on budget and release plans + managing commercial divisions.

I suspect there will be a transition period and overlap with the Mandalorian and Grogu launch next year, and Kennedy might stay on as executive producer for that one and a couple others of the feature films they have lined up. Being 71 is not really that old for a top Hollywood producer, and you can work on top level, without doing much work.

None of the reports says she is leaving tomorrow. So in that sense, we can just close that book and wait for the next chapter to be written. Her contract runs out this year and i really hope for someone who has been abused and exposed for so much hate online - as she has: That she can manage her own narrative surrounding her resignment / retirement decicion - when it happens.
