Discussion James Mangold’s First Jedi Film

I think it’ll be a Mangold film with the First Jedi in it. At least, I hope so. Because you’re right that DoD felt like Mangold trying (too hard) to make an Indy Film. Just as Rian Johnson tried (too hard) to make a Star Wars film. They need to adopt the Gilroy approach. Follow your preferred style unabashedly. And then just dress it up in Star Wars clothes.

 

I read he picked this era to be free from canon, so I don’t expect to see any Rakata. Or anything related to the EU.

 

Maybe not but what about the movies after his one in the same era

 

I think the question of the Rakata appearing should be connected to how Hyperdrives are going to be used in this movie.

Will it be set in an era where the Rakata Empire is extinct and Man (and traditional Aliens) made hyperdrives are a thing?

Or will it be set before they got their hands on the tech and only the Rakata (and perhaps a few other ancient alien races) have access to it?

I prefer the 2nd option myself, makes this era feel far more different from the Old Republic eras and later.

It makes the galaxy feel larger for the inhabitants of various planets. Many living and dying never getting off world.

We do know Generation/Sleeper ships were used by humanity in canon prior to getting the hyperdrive, so that could be the reason why we see some humans interacting with aliens.

But I think the main reason we can have human/alien interaction in an era before common usage of the Hyperdrives is that the Rakata have gone around the galaxy and kidnapped members of various aliens, even taught them a common language so they can be organized used for their wars/expansion/construction.

 

James Gunn says swamp thing isn’t happening anytime soon, so maybe this movie really will happen first.

Exactly! This gives me another idea. What if Rogue Squadron is about a bunch of mediocre pilots who go on vacation to the midichlorian planet to commiserate about their plateaued piloting skills, and return as the best pilots in the galaxy?

 

I think with Mangold basically being called out publicly for no Swamp Thing, and the fact his last two movies were Disney and one with LFL makes me think this will be his next movie

 

I would really prefer this to be the 2027 movie. I kind of think a grand, Biblical epic about the very first Jedi, going 25,000 years in the past, would be a really neat way to cap off the series' 50th anniversary.

 

Any movie before the Dawn of the Jedi or Rey's New Jedi Order movie, sounds like more side story kind of movie.

I agree. Rerelease all of the films leading up to the premiere of Dawn of the Jedi. A whole year of celebration capped by the origin story would be a fantastic way to celebrate the 50th!

 

I’m sure all the movies will be re-released during the 50th anniversary regardless.

 

Yeah, that’s a given. He was saying that capping the 50th anniversary saga marathon with the ultimate origin story is a great idea.

 

Pretty solid rumors see Swamp Thing cancelled. Which would probably mean this one is about to happen.
