The “Terminator” franchise is coming to Netflix with a new anime series created by Japanese animation studio Production IG (“Ghost in the Shell”) and produced by Skydance.

Announced as part of their Geeked Week promotional cycle, complete with logo trailer, the show will follow brand new characters in this world.

2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines.

1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity. Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity.
She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity.

As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.

Matt Tomlin serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Masashi Kudo directs what marks the first animated project for the franchise.

Logo teasers aren't anything new. It's actually not even new for this franchise.

Arnold is working with Netflix now, that could mean he'll be here. Anyway Terminator tech noir aesthetic seems like it would lend itself to an anime style, so bonus

Terminator Zero animated series will debut on Netflix on August 29th (well done, Netflix!). Apparently it is about a solider sent back to Japan in 1997 to protect a scientist that is creating an AI to compete with Skynet.

Tomlin tells EW that the show treats all the past films as canon, saying: “We’re not going to pretend that the third movie didn’t happen. We’re not going to pretend that the sixth movie didn’t happen.”

He also indicates plans to move away from the “muscular sci-fi action” of the latter films and embraced the horror elements of the Cameron movies.

Looove the look we're getting in those images.

    I like this quote

The biggest deviation with the anime, however, is the lack of the Connors, namely Sarah and John. Terminator Zero will ditch the core faces of the franchise thus far to focus on a set of wholly original characters. “I think that it’s time to go into new characters and not burden myself with another John and Sarah Connor saga. There's been a run at that a couple of different times," Tomlin says. "There are a lot of callbacks to the other films," he adds. "Fans who really know the movies are going to be doing the Leo meme from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but it's not going to be as direct as John Connor walks in, because John Connor does not walk in."

I am still hoping we get Arnold voicing a Terminator. Must have been a busy day at the Skynet time displacement machine!

Surprisingly well-done, as far as these type of things go:

Official trailer. I'm definitely keeping this on my radar; of course I like that it has a female protagonist.

The only terminator beyond the second movie worthy of a sequel even though it had different actors playing the same characters from the originals even without Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Sarah Connor chronicles.

I hope the James Cameron project coming up is a redeemer as well as the directors cut of terminator salvation that had not been related yet.

Watched first episode of Terminatior Zero, definitely opens up with Terminatior bloodbath then jumps back to 1997 and apparently in Japan 1997 Terminatior world they had service robots and intelligence programs. Which, uh, okay cool. Not what I was expecting but fine

Does Jim Cameron have anything to do with these things now?

Cameron is interested in Terminatior Zero to see what others are doing but he is working independent on Terminatior stuff

It looks interesting. My relationship to that is very much like The Sarah Connor Chronicles — other people spinning stories in a world I set in motion is interesting to me. What’s their takeaway? What intrigued them about it? Where are they going with it? It looks like they’re going back to the root cause of Judgment Day — the nuclear war — and whether that’s an ultimate timeline. I’d be curious to see what they’ve come up with. I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that. Like with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, they occasionally touched on things I had been playing with completely independently. So there’s some curiosity there. It’s not a burning curiosity, but, obviously, it’d be nice to see it succeed.
    ...

What’s your own Terminator stuff that you’re working on? I wasn’t aware of that.

It’s totally classified. I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively.

Looks like Cameron's reboot will be going pretty far.

As a result, Cameron says he’s confident in the franchise’s future because what comes next will require a ground-up reboot. He tells Empire:

“It’s more than a plan, that’s what we’re doing. That’s all I’ll say for right now. This is the moment when you jettison everything that is specific to the last 40 years of Terminator, but you live by those principles.

It also means moving away from the characters and lore of the prior films and going on all new tangents whilst keeping it thematically true:

You get too inside it, and then you lose a new audience because the new audience care much less about that stuff than you think they do. That’s the danger, obviously, with Avatar as well, but I think we’ve proven that we have something for new audiences.”

So what do you keep? Only the most basic elements:

“You’ve got powerless main characters, essentially, fighting for their lives, who get no support from existing power structures, and have to circumvent them but somehow maintain a moral compass. And then you throw AI into the mix. Those principles are sound principles for storytelling today, right?

So I have no doubt that subsequent Terminator films will not only be possible, but they’ll kick ass. But this is the moment where you jettison all the specific iconography.”

Cameron also reacted to those who cringe at the dialogue in his films saying: “I don’t cringe on any of the dialogue, but I have a lower cringe factor than, apparently, a lot of people do around the dialogue that I write. You know what? Let me see your three-out-of-the-four-highest-grossing films – then we’ll talk about dialogue effectiveness.”

He says looking back at “The Terminator” these days he does find parts of it “that are pretty cringeworthy” but that is over the production value, though he says: “we did pretty well for the resources we had available”.

The only dicey bit in the technical stuff in Terminator is like one or two janky shots of the Arnold terminator eye puppet and even that is covered really quick cutting.

I would suspect Cameron is looking deeper than that, given that they shot some of that film guerilla. Though I'm sure the handful of FX that don't pass the test are also grouped in.

On one hand, it's good that Cameron doesn't want to lean heavily into nostalgia, but on the other hand, if you aren't going to have Sarah Connor, John Connor, the Terminator iconography etc., what's the point of even making it? You may as well tell a totally new story about an evil AI trying to destroy humanity that has no connection to The Terminator.

    This looks so fun!

Though game-related, I think it's worth sharing this since it's pretty sweet seeing some of these new moves given to the T-1000. And they even included the use of the third arm, which is a detail so often overlooked from the film.

    (ultra-violence warning, of course)

Seems like it's been done in the past; at least the T-800 has been in the game.

Let me know when Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor joins the fray, and THAT will be the DLC that I'll be purchasing.
