Acolyte was one of Disney Plus most viewed shows, still canceled!

Luminate also notes that streaming franchises — including Marvel, Star Wars and Rings of Power — all underperformed last year. The second season of Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings series was down 60% in total minutes watched compared to Season 1, and Disney+ didn’t fare much better with offerings like Echo and Agatha All Along, which underperformed previous Marvel streaming series.

But, juxtapose that with the fact that those big IP franchises were still the best performing series on Disney+, and the solution becomes unclear. Percy Jackson and the Olympians was top dog on Disney+ last year with over 3B minutes viewed, and The Acolyte came in second place with 2.7B.

Weren’t all these shows mostly approved during Covid when streaming services were just throwing endless money for content and there would be articles about the death of movie theaters as movies were going direct to streaming?

It seems like streaming services were wagering on streaming media consumption being far bigger than it was.

As Mandalorian wrapped its last season, it got moved to the theatrical space to continue in Mandalorian and Grogu, then presumably will conclude with Dave Filoni’s film.

There has been no word about Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, or Skeleton Crew getting additional seasons.

Andor’s second season was grandfathered in from the start as far as I know.

With Acolyte, it’s ending in that particular iteration under Leslye Headland as showrunner, but I would be surprised if it didn’t continue on in some other space that perhaps is more economically feasible for Disney, like as an animated show.

As far as I know, Ahsoka season 2 is the only live action show to be approved coming out of Covid.

6 out of the 10 top shows on Disney+ in 2024 were Star Wars. The interest in Star Wars is there. If they aren’t getting the views or subscription numbers to afford these shows, then that suggests to me they need to adjust budgets more in line with who is watching. That maybe giving streaming exclusive shows blockbuster budgets isn’t sustainable when whatever subscriber numbers they were anticipating back in 2021 never happened.

Could we get an Acolyte TV movie to wrap up loose ends maybe?

They can do Darth Plagueis and Qimir doing dark side stuff (the sister can say they fell out an airlock off screen)

I would absently enjoy (if they took it this way) that Tenebrous was still alive and the dynamic of Plagueis pursuing an Acolyte while he still lived.

Everyone is looking for an acolyte.

Tenebrous is looking to replace Plagueis who is looking to replace Darth The Stranger who clearly was looking to replace Mae who literally tried to replace Osha by stealing her hairstyle and wearing her clothes but Osha replaced Sol with Darth The Stranger who replaced Mae's brain.

I’m watching Dungeons and Dragons and it’s really distracting how there’s a dude named Xenk Yendar who looks like and has the same hairstyle as Yord Fandar

Just started a rewatch of everything and it’s the first time I’ve actually gone back through The Acolyte.

I certainly didn’t hate it at the time, but wasn’t one of my favourite entries in the GFFA. However, I found it much better watching the episodes back to back. It’s a perfectly good series and while I’d very happily accept critiques and a discussion around them, it doesn’t deserve the level of vitriol it received.

Found the ending slightly jarring at the time, but I actually found it quite intriguing this time and a second season would definitely have been welcomed by me

If you look back at episode ratings it was viewed quite favourable on here. .. it all seemed to implode when the costing was announced. It certainly is a welcome addition but want that preceding movie to be the starting chronological point

I need to rewatch it too. I still haven’t rewatched the finale though I have rewatched the third episode. I love Jodie-Turner Smith’s voice.

I agree with the ending though. It was jarring. Vernestra’s exclamation of “you” when she felt Qimir was a little off.

An opinion I received recently as to why the show was cancelled was because the all the characters they liked were killed and there wasn’t anyone left to really follow or like. This opinion was a middle schooler’s btw.

Qmir is the best character in the show, it is meant to be from a dark side point of view

I think that was the issue. The show didn’t come from a dark side point of view. It was more High Republic than Dark Sider/Sith. If the focus was the Sith, then they should have been the main characters driving the story forward. Qimir was introduced mid season as The Stranger and then the focus changed — but was still driven by SOL and his guilt.

Think it's implied that even a good man like sol is not immune to darkness

Robert Rodriguez should do it. A few colorful scooter riders singing "The Power of Many" while speeding around in slow motion would probably end the whole thing once and for all.

Nah. In fact, canceling it as quickly as they did is a testament to just how bad viewership was.

People don't understand what Parrot Analytics does to attain data. Their data has nothing to do with viewership. It analyzes how much a show or movie is being talked about across different social media sources.

But Parrot doesnt even track how much of this conversation is even positive. Acolyte was a hot button topic in Star Wars and nerd circles for some time and people still are discussing its impact (good or bad) on the canon. Alot of that talk is negative, as I'm sure you are aware.

None of this is indicative of season 2 interest and Disney is acutely aware of this. Their metrics are the best metrics.

Your show is dead, son. Accept it.

That doesn't mean those of us who are fans of aspects of it cannot waste hours getting forensic on it. I'm about to revisit a bunch of Vern related High Republic stuff to better assess whether Qimir is meant to be Imri, her former apprentice who gave into his hate and force choked some people in the books before seemingly "dying".

I must have rewatched 'night' fifty times.. it's stunning...I know that Andor is better and can't wait for it..I've replayed the culmination of rix road the same amount of times...but there are those of us who love all shades of the star wars spectrum..if you look back on the episodes scores on this site they're not that bad. ... And the more certain right wing YouTubers hate on it, I feel like I'm on rix road fighting the empire..it's not the best star wars but it had some great moments

I have probably said this many times over 25 years on here but, while I love all the various aspects of the Star Wars universe, the things that makes it the most uniquely "Star Wars" is the Jedi/Sith/Force aspect so I'm always going to place a far higher premium on the content which focuses on that stuff over starfighter dogfights or rebels or scoundrels with blasters.

I wonder if it is Imri.... hmmm.

Otherwise, Vern drives me crazy in the HR content so I simply enjoy disliking her hypocrisy and that she created a Sith.

I just don't know how many Padawans she could have had who have the letters I(x2), M and R in their name, gave into the Dark Side and then were in a situation where she believed they were dead.

The show certainly was... not altogether what I was hoping for: largely a matter of execution, a lot of the time.

It was also a bit blunt in it's criticisms of the Jedi - though they certainly do deserve a fair bit of it, in this era. Coming so soon after High Republic does seem like quite a swerve at times.
To be honest though - I have mainly seen reactions, rather than the whole thing. Partly due to having to share my DisneyPlus subscription.
