Got mine done in time! Yay! This has been living rent free in my head for days.

Shadows on the water's edge - Davin Dor - using the song of an Australian folk band (Cloudstreet) who are singing about English folklore.

That's wonderful, Kit', thanks so much! I've got it in the index now. :)

And it looks like there is now one week left in our Music challenge, with stories due September 26. Let's see what else comes in! :D

Me again, everyone! Just a quick and friendly reminder that we are now three (3) days away from our soft deadline of September 26 for our Music challenge. You are still welcome to submit stories on an ad-hoc basis after that as well! :)

Managed to get my story written. In Our Eyes its from the Russian punk band Kino's song by the same title. It's a story about Ben Cozine reflecting on his time in the Imperial Army before he would defect to the Rebel Alliance after the Battle of Toprawa.

That’s great, Theodore! Got it in the index now. :)

And with that, just a reminder that today is the last official day of our Music challenge! Stories officially come due tonight at 11:59 PM (23:59) PST, but you can continue to write and submit after the deadline as well. :)

New challenge time, everybody! Many thanks to @Mira Grau for providing our challenge for 4Q 2024, which is...
4Q 2024 Challenge: OCs Inside Out
    [IMG]
In this challenge, you are invited to rewrite a scene from one of your previously written OC-centric stories—only this time from the perspective of the emotions inside your character's mind control room à la Inside Out (2015) and Inside Out 2 (2024). (For reference, here's the Inside Out Fandom.com Wiki.) Here are the requirements Mira G. has provided:
As usual, stories are due in eight (8) weeks, on Friday, November 22 at 11:59 pm (23:59) PST. TOS applies, as always. If you have questions about the challenge, feel free to ask, though you may want to tag Mira Grau as well, as she was the one who came up with it. :)

    Happy writing to all!

@Mira Grau Just to clarify, as I haven't seen Inside Out (though judging from the summary I just read on Wikipedia, I definitely need to watch it asap): we're not just talking about rewriting a scene from the OC's 3rd-person-limited POV, right? We're talking about rewriting it with the emotions personified, who are prodding the OC to react in this or that way. Is that correct?

And if it is, does the POV of the original scene matter? By which I mean, does the original story have to be written from the OC's POV, or can it be told through another character's POV or by an omniscient narrator?

Idea is to rewrite an already existing scene with your OCs from the perspective of their „mind crew“ as seen in Inside Out.
Wouldn‘t say it has to to be the same OC PoV as in the existing scene.

It sounds a lot like the EPCOT attraction, Cranium Command.

    I already have an idea for this and it's probably going to be super obvious who it's going to be about and Inside Out is just the PERFECT catalyst for a story brewing in the making :p8-}

I'm just dropping by to thank @Mira Grau for introducing me to Inside Out. We sat tonight with my husband and children to watch it and we loved it. Bring on the sequel!

(And now, I have a proper idea for a fic for this challenge too.)

Aaaaand... done! My story for the Inside Out Challenge is up: Sedition, featuring the emotions that populate the mind of Admiral Ozzel's cat.

I was trying to find a question to get this thread restarted...but everything just gave me links to "200 questions to make you get to know your character better."

Which made me then wonder - how many of us actually do those kind of quizzes/questions for our OCs? Do you use them? Do you use something else? Or do you just wing it and hope for the best?

I'm definitely the wing it and hope for the best type...

My characters develop their own personalities, independent of their writer. Like, I start with the scenario and the character, and they decide what they're going to do in the situation. Each character has a different way of doing things, and I just have to wait to see how/what they will do, and how a character responds to any given situation, to me, is more than half their character right there.

Same actually. There are definitely aspects of my characters that have shocked even me, but that is almost entirely a natural and organic evolution that happens when writing.
Most especially when they are hanging around in the background of a scene and my mind is suddenly racing concerning what is going through their head during event x while the protagonist gets most of the limelight and the other person may not even get a word in edgewise, but its the psychology of it that fascinates me.

It actually occurs to me that some of the favorite scene's I've written so far may not mean as much to a casual reader as they do to me, just because they don't know what's happening in the background while I do. Oh well, just a reason to write more stories from different POV's. :p

Hey everybody! It's been a while, hasn't it? Ready for a new challenge? Then please join me for...
    The OC Missing Scene Challenge

I thank the excellent @Kit' for providing this challenge! Here it is...

We know and love "missing scene" stories involving canon characters: something important to the story that isn't shown on screen—at least not yet. This challenge invites you to do the same with your own OC stories!

The "official" due date is in the usual eight (8) weeks, on Wednesday, June 11, at 11:59 pm (23:59) PST, but late/adhoc entries are more than welcome too. And of course you all know to follow the rules of the TOS! ;)

I must confess both this, and the inside out challenge have caught my interest, but the problem is the scene I want to write is very dependent on an event, and a character quirk I haven't revealed yet and probably won't for a while.

So don't be surprised if I come back to this in a year or so and drop something then. :p

My response - How the light fails - part of a missing scene from How it Ends that happens right after the slap.

How recent /old can it be? I have an idea for one of my early epics to be a missing scene, but it was posted in 2008. Although I have recently re-posted it in full.

Great question; the story you’re basing the challenge story on can be as old or as new as you like! The challenge story itself, however, should of course be newly written for this challenge. :)
