This movie is all about exploring the Kasdans love of the character. They managed to successfully put in all the great threads of Han's early life together.
I remember watching it opening day and loving all of it. A great stand alone film about one of the most iconic characters in film history. I saw it again before my birthday that year going...solo of course.
Our local library showed the film for May the 4th and I was able to watch with the family. It was great, I really like the movie and one of the main reasons is the characters. They're all very well done, taken from other classical films/shows and work within the context of a 70s heist/western gunslinger man for hire.
Yes Han could've been a little taller and its impossible to fill in for Ford, but Alden did fantastic. Chewbacca was great and lovable. He got a lot to do and say finally. Tobias and Val were great and gave Han someone to look up to and have a woman to cherish like Tobias does. Rio was fun and good comic relief. Qi'ra was a well played female fettal who helped give us the big surprise at the end with Maul. Lando was great to be included as we needed to know how Han won the Falcon if we're doing a young Han movie right. Seeing the Kessel run was a bonus and well done. I'm glad the film showed different timelines as it made more sense this way. L3 was very funny, I think she was a little over the top, but all good. The rest of the characters were all fantastic. I wish we got more of Dryden, Enfyss Nest, Cantina aliens (Therm Scissorpunch). The White Worm crew with Lady Proxima, Moloch, Rebolt and those hounds were fairly scary. Love the costumes, animotronics, Moloch's hood thing and voice. The car chase!!
The film was able to spread out all these classical events in Han's life which was good as we can see now, we may not ever get to see any other film or show go over more stories of that famous Corllian space pirate.

I’ve just watched this for the first time and to be quite honest I’ve got no idea why I’ve been so averse to giving it a go.

Really enjoyable film and I thought Alden was great as Han. Lots of the speech and mannerisms were well done

You definitely won't be alone in not having given it a chance. I would bet that most who eventually get round to watching it will feel the same as you.

How any Star Wars fan could resist watching a live action Star Wars film for seven years is totally baffling to me.

I agree however SOLO was poorly marketed compared to the saga films and R1. Also, with it being released so soon after the previous film which had a mixed reception didn't help. That and I suppose a prequel for a legacy character was something a lot of Star Wars fans didn't really have high hopes for.

I'm sure much better marketing and a December release date would have helped SOLO massively.

I was referring to someone posting here. Someone who's enough of a fan to join a SW messageboard. I don't think they didn't realize Solo had been released until seven years later because of bad marketing. ;)

I’ve not really got a great answer to why I’ve never watched it to be honest. I was pretty disillusioned with the ST at the time and just didn’t fancy watching it. I read a lot about the film so pretty much knew what happened.

I then just couldn’t be bothered to add it into full watch throughs. It’s strange because I’m one of the people who tries to see the positives in any Star Wars content. Any way, I’m glad I’ve watched it now!

No worries. I actually didn’t get around to watching ROTS until a few years after its release. That’s how disappointed I was with AOTC.

It’s not that weird, especially the more content there is. I’ve only seen Ep. IX and Solo once, which doesn’t scream “hardcore message board fan.” Skipping Andor season 2 thus far and no fear of missing out.

Don’t fear it. But you’re missing out big time. :)
