In ANH Ben Kenobi says "For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic",but in AOTC Palpatine says "I will not let this Republic which has stood for a thousand years be split into two". A generation is roughly 25 to 35 years.

I've wondered about the same thing since I watched Attack Of The Clones for the first time. It is possible that it simply is a blooper by Lucas or it is possible that the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice long before the Republic was founded.

Are you sure Obi Wan says "For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic", or is it "For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy". I could have sworn it was the in the galaxy.

IIRC the Jedi have been around a lot longer than the Republic we see in the PT, and putting a generation at 25 years would mean that 1000 generations was 25,000 years ago, which is about when the Jedi Order was established. Also the first fledgling stages of the Galacic Republic (not to be confused with the Galactic Empire) was founded at about this time, and slowly over time it spread across the Galaxy and became the Republic we see in the PT. So even though the Republic was not fully formed, the Jedi looked after the initial stages of its political formation.

No,Kenobi definitely said "in the old Republic". Maybe Palpatine was refering to the Sith when he said a thousand years, like when Ki-Adi Mundi said "The Sith have been extinct for a millenium."

No, the explanation is that Palpatine is referring to the current incarnation and consitution of the Republic. THAT has stood for 1000 years. The Republic as a whole with the Jedi as its guardians has been around for 1000 generations, as Obi-Wan says.

Ok, this is how it is, if you take into account Knights of the Old Republic.

KOTOR is 15,000 years before Episode 1. Now there are 5,000 years before the first KOTOR. Now that equals your 1,000 generations. This being both the old and new Republic.

Now 1,000 years, is the current form of the Republic. Dating back 1,000 years before Episode 1. This equals your 1,000 years.

    Hope I answered your question.

I think it is a 1000 generations. Jedi have been guardians of the GFFA much longer than just 1000 years; look at KOTOR. That's 4000 years before the Battle for Naboo.

KOTOR (the game) is 3,956 years before ANH, while KOTOR (the comic) exactly 4000 years before ANH.

The Ruusan Reformation, which IIRC ended 1000 years of war occured 1000 years before ANH, which is most likely what Palpy is referring to.

The beginings of the Jedi were studying and manipulating the Force long before the idea of a Republic popped up. They just chose to mildly ally themselves with the Republic and politics eventually ensnared them forever in the system, only to be freed by the Empire. Not that I like the Empire. I am 100% New Republic, the Old Republic was nice but a little too corrupt.

Obi-Wan was right, the Jedi are ancient, they were using the force way before the Old Republic. The Old Republic is only 2000 years before KotOR I believe.

Well, from looking at these lines from Obi-Wan and Palpatine we can logically conclude that in the Star Wars universe, 1 generation lasts 1 year.

What species can mature in one year? I think that the Jedi existed long before the Republic, in any form, existed, but became the divine police force at the Republic's inception.

People in the GFFA mature at lightning speed because their scientists have conquered metabolism!

That's also why you only see fat humans in the deep dark corners of the galaxy, such as the Rancor Keeper. In fact that's the only chubby human besides Porkins that I remember seeing in the saga.

(does metabolism affect aging? It sounded cool, but now I'm not so sure I know what I'm talking about...um, well regardless of if it makes any sense whatsoever, I'm sticking to my answer! It's all about the metabolism!)
