Okay, first it's not like I didn't "get" the film. I got it alright, but it was perhaps the most boring movie I have ever seen in my life. I had a better time watching Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and You Got Served than this movie. Can anyone in here honestly say that they enjoyed this movie? I mean how is this considered one of the greatest movies ever made? It was sooooo boring. It takes like 10 minutes just to see a little space craft exit out a space station and we get to see 20 minutes of shots of Jupiter and a nice little psychedelic space trip. Again how is this a good movie? I'm sorry but this is probably one of the worst movies I have every seen, I mean the visual and special effects were astounding for 1968 and are still better than some today, but I just can't get over the 2 and half hours of my life I will never get back.

There, I'm done venting my anger now.

You need to read the novel by Arthur C. Clarke. It's far more detailed than the film as it omits things, and you don't really have the details of the apes in the begining. Also, you don't see David Bowman going to a state of near insanity in the film wheras you do in the novel.

The monkey suits in the beginning looked pretty good for the late '60s too, but I have to agree with you. This movie is a poor man's cure for insomnia. ;)

I loved 2001. The Matrix trilogy is a far greater waste of time than 2001.

well, if 2001 never came out, then it's possible that star wars might never have seen the light of day.

Agreed. "The Matrix is overrated." - Mace Windy

2001 Space Odyssey deserves every bit of praise that it recieves. Its more than just a film, its a piece of art. Like it or hate it, the choice that Kubrick made to take his time tell his story is a very artistic and bold move. The films pacing, much like the ideas that the film presents, is meant to humble us.

    Good, Stanley is here.

You know, The Shining wasn't scary. I find it quite comical and I laugh when I watch it.

The Shining was truely the first horror movie to introduce the concept of using a close family member as the main antagonist. In its time, it was a chilling thought.

Windy, you couldn't be more wrong, you phony intellectual ass-kisser. My use of long slow tracking shots, stills, and even "On the Beautiful Blue Danube," was done only to confuse and annoy those of you who can't feel film. Also, to piss off the Star Trek crowds eagerly awaiting a space adventure movie.

If he wants to be a critic, I say he should make his own film and see what we have to say to him. What an ingrate!

If you haven't figured it out by my above comments in this thread, I am a HUGE Kubrick fan. Not only do I consider him to be the greatest director of all time, but I'd even argue that Eyes Wide Shut has its merits.

My Question: Does anybody else own that fabulous Stanley Kubrick boxed set that includes Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Lolita, Barry Lyndon, Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove?

I consider it to be the crown jewel of my DVD collection! :D

I read the book. I liked the book. I understood the book.

And I hated the movie. For something that, since I already read it, I should have known what was supposed to be going on, it was still confusing. How is an eye flashing different colors good cinema? Why am I supposed to say, "Gee, those several minutes of psychadelic colors were so artistically deep"? And how exactly was that supposed to represent Bowman's trip through the monolith? It's flashing colors. It's flashing more colors. Eyes. He's in a hotel room. He's in a hotel room, and he's older. Who's that guy? Oh, it's him again. Now he's the Star Child. Cue end credits. Wow, that was so deep. I knew what it was meant to portray, and I still had no idea what was happening. It's so intellectual, I don't understand it. What fantastic cinema.

The above is entirely my opinion. If you liked 2001, more power to you. If you liked the book, we can agree there. Just don't say "It's because you didn't understand it."

Would it be fair, however, to say that while you understand it as a film, you don't understand its value as a piece of art?

I'd be happy for someone to explain it. The stuff in space, yes, I think it is artistic. Basically, everything from Heywood's shuttle to when Bowman enters the monolith. I think music and sound (or lack thereof), as well as imagery, are used to fantastic effect. Incidentally, this is also my favorite part of the movie. However, the stuff before and after that (the monkeys and the monolith), are either dragged out or just random and confusing, respectively. In regards to the monolith parts, there are many ways to make an alien experience seem beautiful and mysterious. I don't think different colored eyes is one of them. And I think that the flow and the plot of the movie itself suffer as a result of this attempt to be artistic. So maybe making jups cuts to Bowman at different ages helps emphasize the metamorphosis he's going through, or something. I don't think that the movie had to become incomprehensible (again, IMO) to show that, though.

I loved 2001... but I can see how a lot of people wouldn't like it.. especially after seeing all of the incredible effects work of today.

Also, the end of 2001 is kind of a rip-off.. because they set you up for something they can't possibly deliver... so they do the best they can but there is only so much you can do. Anything else would be cheesy... kind of like Contact, when Jodie Foster speaks to an alien for the first time in man's history... how do you do that? lol
