What the heck is good about Milkshape, except for its import/export capabilities ?!

You want to look into Blender for a completely free Gaming content development software.

There's GMax also--a free version of 3ds Max that is specifically for making game models--but that's all that you can do with it-it doesn't render.

As far as free, probably Blender is the best option since it's basically has all the stuff you need: a 3D animation package and the engine to drive a game.

As far as game and rendering engines there are many that are free like Crystal Space and Ogre. Here are a few:

    Crystal Space
    Ogre
    G3D
    Cube
    Sauerbraten
    IrrLicht

    Yes, gmax is very good.

Hahaha, just realized "Milkshape" "Blender" kinda all like food products.

You import a milkshake and use a blender to make it.. wow.. im done.

Can you do it in 3ds max?

Yeah--it's much easier to do game modeling with 3ds Max than Gmax--I don't know about game engines though--look through the tutorials. Many of the current games used 3ds Max as their modeling program--and most use Softimage XSI for animation even if the model was made in Max.

i know you can model in 3dsmax, but I was wondering if you could actually render the game in 3ds max, or provide scripting animation for models - I don't know much about 3d games, could you refer me to a tutorial or something?

No, that I know for sure-3ds Max is no game engine, as far as I know it's just good for modeling--and some games can take the animation--but you would have to check up on the game engine you are using before trying animation.

All the suggestions are good, but as far as beginner game making goes, you really can't beat Blender. It's free, and comes with a descent game engine out of the box (so to speak). You won't be making half-life 3 any time soon, the engine by corporate standards isn't fast enough, but I've seen some pretty cool little games come out of it. If you take the time to learn the Blender game engine, you will gain a heap of basic knowledge about game programming and low poly modeling and how it all goes together. As far as I know, there isn't another free program as good as Blender that will let you do it all.

I had a 3ds Max plugin which allowed you to export as XAML which can run on a game such as Unreal Tournament. Blender is the way to go for newbies in 3d, then move to Gmax, then to 3ds max, and then to Maya PLE, and If you have the funding, move on to the full maya. that is what I did. Also If you are going to go Expensive Software route, Get Motion Builder. (same crowd as Maya)

I'm a newbie to the whole 3D world. I tried Blender, but couldn't figure anything out. I'm just looking for something that I can make people and creatures on, like poser. The only problem is I can't find any freeware like that. Any suggestions?

No, none other than searching for tutorials on modeling and animating in Blender. I figured out how to work Blender after I worked through a few tuts that deal with the basics. After that, it´s a breeze to do stuff in Blender. I only stopped using Blender because almost no professional studio uses Blender (which is a shame, btw.).

If you never ever worked in a 3D-application, all progs are almost equally tough to master. And although Poser has many presets, if you don´t have a basic understanding of 3D-work, you waste your time trying to create something really cool that you will be really happy with.
