Is there a program that can convert 3D meshes from one program type to another?

I'm pretty sure that lightwave has a native/built-in app that imports max models (not always well, mind you). Just open up your MAX file, like you would a LWO file in Modeller, and a little window should pop up with some options.

    Good luck.

No, not MAX. MAX is a proprietary format, the only thing that can truly read the file is MAX itself. Some conversion programs can do a somewhat passable job at reading them, but usually loses all textures. LW can't import them at all. You'll need to find a 3DS version of the file and do the conversion through LW, which usually includes correcting the model (parts frequently move around in 3DS), optimizing it for LW (1000+ layers for a single model is a waste), and retexturing it (since few people seem to have figured out how to export textures from MAX to 3DS, even though it's not that difficult).

    Look into two popular converters..

    Nugraf Polytrans and Deep Exploration.
