I was speaking to Mrs Halibut on my mobile phone last night, and I went under a bridge and our communications were disrupted, and I immediately took cover and brandished a rifle, awaiting the imminent invasion. Six hours later I realised that maybe Mr Bibble wasn't being entirely truthful. We all know that a communications disruption doesn't necessarily mean invasion. So I was wondering, what else could have caused the now infamous disruption?

My theory is that Mr Bibble hadn't paid for the phone bill, and so Naboo had been cut off the galactic intercom system. And he only said it was an invasion to try and steer any suspicion away from him. Any other thoughts as to what REALLY caused the disruption?

    Seriously?

This isn't like going into a tunnel or under a bridge. As we've seen, hologram transmissions via the holonet get through even asteroid feilds, unless the bridge of a Star Destroyer is destroyed by an asteroid hitting it just right. Also, given the large number of ships in orbit, you've got the makings of an invasion.

    Seriously?

    Of course not LOL.

But I do think that saying it can "only" mean invasion is a bit melodramatic ;)

But this is more of a humour thread.

A communications disruption can mean only one thing. Invasion.

Look mate, you've said that every single bloomin' time that weather balloon masks the aerial signal. It's not an invasion! Give it a rest already!

One day it will be, mark my words

It made for a better line than...

"A communications disruption can mean only one of two things. An invasion, or Naboo just passed under a bridge."

Wasn't Sio a fun character though? I admit, the line about the communication disruption was completely OTT, but somehow it fits in well with Sio Bibble's campy character.

I remember a post by our much missed old friend That_Wascally_Droid in the ROTS CBC thread about how deverstated and crestfallen Sio looks as he walks behind Padme's coffin and how it takes you back to what a fun, campy guy he was at the beginning. Great observation that was.

It could be possible that the battery on the generator died. Queen Amidala forgot to put it on the shopping list.

Sio Bibble is the old cynic in your family. The guy who always thinks the worst and expect the worst to happen. On the peaceful out of bounds world of Naboo, nothing like that EVER happens. Everything is always serene and beautiful. The people are a little sheltered, backwards and innocent. If one little noise is made, they think the sky is falling, because there very traditional and routine type of people, with tea at 10 every day. Of course, Sio being the cynic of the council will expect an invasion especially after months of a blockade, why not?

And if you think Sio Bibble is campy and pessimistic....he doesn't hold a candle to captain Panaka! ;)

"More likely they've been wiped out!"

"This is a battle we cannot win!"

    "There's too many of them!"

    "Looks pretty bad."

    "We're sitting ducks!"

    He's worse than 3PO!

    Those poor backwater Naboo.....:(

He's the type of guy that sees a particle of dust that settles then runs around like a chicken w/ his head cut-off.

"Teh SKY is Falling!! Teh SKY is FALLING!!!"

Now that I think about it, the holovid of his plea for help was even better.

Now, does anyone want a crusty, dry, serious answer?

(Pretend that darth-sinister hasn't already posted, of course) :p

I believe that Sio Bibble's line has an allegorical meaning. It alludes to the nature of the Dark Side. When people stop communicating with each other, it means that the Dark Side has crept or is creeping in. Think of the Gungans and the Naboo in the same film. Think of Anakin and Padme shutting each other out or trivialising the other's view in ROTS.

True, the line was a little dramatic. Plus like one of those 'huhhh?!' lines where the character's a little too quick to jump to conclusions. But it does make sense he'd think that, I mean Naboo was targetted during all of TPM and obviously as a young Queen she's more vulnerable than most leaders of other planets.

Also, in SW we see one of the main strategies during combat is to knock out communication so that reinforcements cant be called.

Also, although it's cut out in the film, Panaka orders one of his officers to "check the transmission generator". What we don't see, that is of-screen, that the guy comms in the comm techs and they tell him that there is no technical problem at all. So thats what makes Bibble's comment a little more realistic.

    Read between the lines....

Yeah, Bibble jumped the gun on his assumption.

The lines should have been :

CAPT. PANAKA : Check the transmission generators...
    BIBBLE : A malfunction?
CAPT. PANAKA : It could be the Federation jamming us. Your Highness.
BIBBLE : A communications disruption can only mean one thing. Invasion.
AMIDALA : Don't jump to conclusions, Governor. The Federation would not dare
    go that far.
BIBBLE : But how do you explain all the landing invasion craft out the window, your highness ?

The Trade Federation were landing their craft in select remote areas of the planet like the northern hemisphere, etc. They would advance on the city of Theed from the north.

We still don't see it used that often in the films:

    - Death Star approach in ANH
    - TPM
    - IMPLICATION of signal jamming in ROTS ( explicit in Stover novel )
