    So, this one time I was at an Eric Clapton concert (Auckland Supertop, New Zealandl, 12 November 1990) and I wore an... Eric Clapton T-Shirt.

    It's not until later in my concert-attending youth that I realised that wearing an artist's own merchandise to a concert is a fashion disaster.

    My only saving grace was that the shirt I was wearing was from Europe, so the dates were 6 months old, and the design was different to the batch being sold in the tent out front.

    So - advice - when attending a concert, you should NEVER wear the touring acts own merchandise.

    Here's what to wear in ascending order of coolness;

    5. You should wear a t-shirt advertising the singer's favourite band.

    "Look at me. I like the same band as you. Wanna hang out after the show?".

    eg. Wear a Nirvana shirt to a Silverchair gig.

    [image=http://www.jiggy.com/cat-images-sm/nv0002t-sm.jpg] [image=http://www.chairpage.com/photos/pics/live5.jpg]

    4. Wear a t-shirt from the singer's previous band.

    "Yo. I liked him back before you were in this band. Your old stuff was better."

    eg. Wear a Soundgarden or RATM shirt to an Audioslave concert.

    [image=http://www2.ttcn.ne.jp/~ian/soundgarden1.jpg] [image=http://www.tshirtriot.com/cat-images-sm/ratm003-sm.jpg] [image=http://www.xmusiconline.net/cornell2_small.jpg]

    3. Wear a shirt of an ousted group member who split acrimonously.

    "Look at me. I like the other guy better! You suck"

    eg. A Roger Waters shirt to a Pink Floyd concert. Or a Megadeth shirt to a Metallica gig.

    [image=http://www.theweathermen.com/acatalog/megadeth_holywars.jpg] [image=http://www.docks.de/media/fotos/Metallica.jpg]

    2. Wear a shirt of the a band member's ex-girlfriend.

    "Ha, I'm not sleeping with her, and neither are you now. That's one thing we have in common!"

    eg. An Elastica shirt to a Blur gig. Or a Patsy Kensit shirt to an Oasis gig - just don't stand in the first 4 rows or Liam will smash your teeth in. Or a Britney Spears T-Shirt to a Justin Timberlake show, should anyone actually attend those things.

    [image=http://www.ukbritney.tv/britneyspears/shop/m08_small.jpg] [image=http://www.mtv.com/shared/media/news/images/n/NSync/sq-justin-live-march02-wi.jpg]

    1. Wear no shirt at all. We just love rubbing against sweaty naked flesh (take this sarcastically if you're a male, literally if not).

    [image=http://www.rapindustry.com/crowd2.jpg] [image=http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1245000/images/_1248060_festival_300.jpg]

    Now please step up and share your concert going fashion tips...

    Well, JP, did you know I saw this kid once, this kid with the Down syndrome, wearing a Simple Minds T-shirt? That struck me as funny.

    Don't be insulted. I have nothing against people with the Down syndrome. Some of my best friends have the Down syndrome.

    Suggestion. Dont wear a Slash shirt to a Guns N' roses concert, or an axl shirt to a Velvet Revolver show.

    Well...I believe that hot chicks should wear those lace up on the side pants...and nothing else. :p

    A friend of mine had some fun at one concert...and the crowd gave a standing ovation. ;)

    In my dreams here, I have seen the destruction of the Jedi. The death of the Republic. I have seen the Temple in ruins, the Senate smashed, and Coruscant itself shattered by orbital bombardment from immense ships of impossible design. I have seen Coruscant, the seat of galactic culture, become a jungle far more hostile and alien than any on Haruun Kal.
    I have seen the end of civilization.

    > Hey JP, a few months ago i went to a Datsun concert. And i wore an old Datsun roadster shirt that i still had lying around. Was that a good move?

    First of all, big ups for seeing some great New Zealand Rock'n'Roll. :D "Harmonic generator it's a mod-u-lator"

    And, so long as you didn't BUY the shirt for the sole purpose of wearing to the Datsuns show, that would be OK.

    Times when it's OK to wear an act's own merch to their show;

    1. When you have a shirt from their first ever tour in your country. Y'know the guy wearing a U2 "October" tour shirt (yellow sweat stains under the arms, dates on the back so faded you can hardly read them, big holes around the neck) to the Pop-Mart tours is OK. Especially if you sit down for a smoke or go to the toilet during any song post Joshua Tree.

    2. It's OK to buy a t-shirt or programme for $45 at the tent if you have burned or downloaded their last 3 albums. You owe those guys some money. Yeah, you paid $120 for a golden circle seat, but you should really donate a little more. You know that the 2nd home in Zurich & the learjet isn't going to get bought unless you all help out. Just don't wear the shirt until at least 2 months after the show, in case you see someone else on the street also wearing it and have to avoid eye-contact or cross the street.

    3. It's OK to wear a shirt from a 'hometown' gig at your local show. Auckland for Split Enz, Dublin for U2, Athens for R.E.M., Seattle for Pearl Jam, Livepool for Paul McCartney.

    These are rare exceptions though, and not everyone can get away with it.

    Livepool for Paul McCartney.

    Ah, I had: "You Are My Least Favourite Beatle, But Since You Are About The Only One Still Alive -- Well, Here I Am!"

    Is that OK, too? Want to share some recipe tips after this, Darlene?

    Ahh. Yes, that shirt at a Macca show would be just about perfect.

    I saw a CD yesterday "Denny Laine sings the hits of Wings". There's a joke in there somewhere...

    > how about if you have a tattoo of one of the bands's older albums?

    Well, that would all depend where said tattoo was located. Or indeed what band / album we're discussing.

    I mean, are you going to attend a Robbie Williams show with this plastered across your chest?

    the funny thing is that at every concert i've been to there were TONS of people wearing the bands own shirts. i think this "don't wear their shirts at their concerts" thing is more of a myth or one of those things people joke about but don't really follow.

    Another thing is to wear a shirt of a band that the band you're watching perform hates; such as wearing a Creed shirt to a Limp Bizkit concert.

    Oh, I KNOW that. I've done it myself. I'm just saying is the lamest thing you can do. A fashion faux-pa.

    I'm just trying to save some kids the embarrasment of being one of those sad, sad people who don their merchandise the instant they buy it.

    There is absolutely no circumstance where one should wear a Creed t-shirt.

    Is that clear?

    The only way i would ever buy a creed shirt at a concert, is if the toilet booths run out of toilet paper.

    Thanks btw JP. I was worried i might have made an ass of myself.

    You can sleep easier tonight.

    Oh also. It's ultra cool to wear the support acts t-shirt to a gig. The more obscure the support act the better, naturally. This doesn't work nearly so well if, say, Coldplay are supporting The Rolling Stones or something.

    For the ultimate cool, ensure you're at the front for the support act, then after their set push your way out of the crowd (take the longest route possible) and go home.

    said tattoo is on my left bicep, so i think i would have to wear a wife beater or some sort of undershirt tank top, the band is Man or Astroman? and the cover rocks but i can not find a pic of it, if i do i will post it
