Summary: Young Mara finds that no good deed goes unpunished.
Notes: Chaos_pockets told me Vader hugging fic could never work. Boy was she wrong.

Mara watched, wide-eyed, as the men in white marched the woman with the sad brown eyes down the street. Mom and Papa had insisted on taking her outside to watch, but she didn?t know why. All she knew was that everyone was outside.

Following the men in white was a man all in black who breathed funny. She focused on him. He seemed scary, but at the same time, he felt all twisted up inside. Mara always knew when people were feeling bad, even if Mom told her she should never tell anyone about it.

The scary man felt wrong, somehow. Like he was angry and sad and hurting all at the same time. Mara wanted to make him feel better.

She twisted out of Mom?s grip and wormed through all the people in the way. She ran up to the man, even though she was really, really scared. He stopped and looked down at her. His breathing was very, very loud. Mara made herself be brave and give him a hug. That always made Papa feel better when he was twisted up inside.

The man is black kept looking at her the whole time, and for a second there was a funny feeling like there was someone inside her head. That was silly, though, because no one could be inside your head, right?

The man in black called one of the men in white over. ?Find this child?s parents. Bring them all to the spaceport. I want them waiting when I am through here.?

It was probably a better thing that Mara missed the execution of Sabe, one of Padme Amidala?s former handmaidens.

At the spaceport, Mara had to sit in a chair while one of the men in white watched her so she wouldn?t run off. She could hear Mom and Papa talking to the man in black, but she could only hear some of the words. She didn?t know what he meant by ?custody? or ?Coruscant?. Happily, she didn?t hear it when he said ?death?. She did hear Mom start to cry though, and wondered why.

The man in black came in the room. ?Put her on board the shuttle. And send a message to the Emperor. I have discovered something that might interest him."

Mara Jade was going to Coruscant.

Interesting vignette. I like the way you showed Vader as he appeared from Mara's POV. Well done!
