Hello. I wanted to hear some discussion surrounding the in-universe reasoning for different armor variants. It's obvious the standard kit won't cover all roles, so different armor types exist. Let's get into the specific variants! Spoiler To start this off we have the EVO armor. The idea is to protect the trooper from hazardous environments. We can see the trooper has a life support pack, heavier plating and a survival backpack for long patrols. What I find odd is the helmet. What is it's purpose? Why is it better than the standard helmet? The only difference I can tell is it would have a wider FOV. What do you think. Some other armor I think is worth discussing would be SCAR and Shoretrooper armor.
Those tubes on the side seem to be how the air gets into the helmet. While a normal trooper helmet could accept air tubes the same way a TIE helmet does (and one of the SCAR troopers has this setup), it could probably be easily damaged in combat. Having the tubes built into the helmet prevents this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Would be interesting to know how big the difference between the Phase II Clonetrooper Armor and the Standard Stormtrooper Armor was, how long it did take after the End of the Clone Wars until this armor was introduced and how much time it took until all clones were wearing Stormtrooper Armor. One thing to remember is that stormtroopers especially once non clones were allowed were cheap. The empire could probably invest more in the well being of its soldiers. It doesn't have to-if you have hundreds of thousands of ships and trillions of soldiers than it's utterly wasteful to invest more than the minimum necessary on armor.
Darth Invictus The Imperial Military doctrine changed greatly after the Empire's reformation. By the Sith-Imperial War Stormtroopers had armor even tougher than Phase 2. What do you guys think of the SCAR Trooper armor? Spoiler I've always been an advocate of armor customization, and it makes sense that individual SpecForce troopers would get that privilege. However, I think the SCAR armor is so customized it's madness. I seriously doubt the Empire has five different chestplates that fill the same purpose. Why do they have different kneepads? The worst part is the glowing lights. Not tactical in the slightest. Why does the slicer have a different jetpack? Imperial jetpacks have existed in the canon for a long time. Why does the slicer have an antenna? Why would a stormtrooper ever need to use a knife at this point? Punch daggers have been around since the Clone Wars. Why do they use hipstery life support packs? Too cool for the base model? I like all the pouches. Very practical and it's absolutely hilarious that they have to externally strap them on. Really shows the flaws of the Phase 3 kit. I also like Zuke's armor. Obviously a Phase 3 Blaze Trooper. What do you guys think?
Your probably right I was referring to the Palpatinist era. It makes sense that when they controlled less territory ans didn't have the same amount of manpower they would invest more in their soldiers armor.
That's the Empire's whole philosophy. Overwhelm them with sheer numbers of mediocre troops. Everyone aside from the commanders are expendable. That's why Vader gets the SSD and an TIE Advanced with shields and all the other get no shields at all.
I've been thinking about the armor the troopers on Scarif wore. A lot of the armor bits don't really seem necessary ( i.e. why make new leg plates when there's already a standard issue leg plate?). A lot of the plates are simply aesthetically inconsistent with the normal kit. Then I remembered the Empire likes competition. There's instances of contractors having products in competition. For example, Seinar's Vindicator-class directly competes with similar KDY warships. So I figured the Shoretrooper armor is probably an "off-brand" design of stormtrooper armor.
Stormtrooper armor. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! Sing it again, y'all! ... I'll show myself out.
Yeah, and I also get the impression that after the Clone Wars, the Empire got a bad case of "well, we've got no real enemies left, so we can afford to get careless."
Yeah-I like to think the quality of individual equipment improved in the later years of the galactic civil war(in legends) and afterwards into the next century ABY. And the empire still had enemies-just insignificant enemies-pirates, separatist holdouts, occasional uprisings. Pirates could be crushed by the imperial navy, planetary uprisings made an example of by the 501st and combined arms operations directed at any separatist holdouts or enclaves. But the empire certainly had no peer competitor-not the Hapans, or the Hutts, or Chiss, or centrality, or any allied world's or minor client states. When everyone else is an ant why bother investing in high quality training for individual soldiers-when you have millions of soldiers and trillions of conscripts to draw on. Basically the empire is big enough that it can afford to not care about the lives of its soldiers.
Let's not pretend that the armor was even that used. The Empire was at a pretty peaceful time. Most soldiers wore a helmet, maybe a chestplate and shoulderplates if we're pushing it. The armor worn by stormtroopers was mostly for marines fighting pirates in the more lawless sectors. The armor didn't have any delusions of being blasterproof. But it helps in a lot of ways. Armor in the early 20th century stood practically no chance against bullets, but you'd still wear it. Any protection is better than no protection, 'specially when there's shrapnel around.
Minor spoiler for Solo... Spoiler New armor in Solo! I really like the look of it. Many plates are clearly either reused or just plain aesthetically consistent. This is what I really want- consistency. I also like the heavier coat pieces. I'd guess the heating on this trooper is less powerful than 501st troopers, hence the coat. It just screams 'backwater' to me. Disney is being so creative with these films. I love it! All I want is a game with proper armor customization that incorporates all of these beautiful elements.
"Backwater" is exactly the right word. If this were the old EU, I'd say it looks like the kind of thing the Centrality or the Tion Hegemony would've dreamed up in an attempt to make themselves look like the Empire. Which is quite fitting for a pre-OT Han and Lando movie.
So I've finally seen Solo. There was a lot of good, with some bad. The "Range Troopers" still look pretty cool. One minor problem: They wear these big boots for magnetic grip. Clone Wars-era armor had magnets built in to all of their boots. So maybe the Stormtroopers dropped that feature, but I don't see why the new boots would look so much more primitive. The "Motorcycle Cop" trooper on Corellia was pretty eh for me. I don't see why a trooper on a bike would need a radically different set of armor. The armor looks functionally quite similar to the Scout armor. But at the end of the day I think it looks plain ugly and unnecessary. The Mimban Stormtroopers were just great! The reinforced helmets were a great touch. Plus, troopers with capes! Just an all around practical-looking load out. I've heard people complain about their armor's weathering. I have a theory; we've seen that the Empire really hates camouflage. Perhaps the troopers covered their armor in local mud to provide improvised camo. The "Mudtroopers" might be even cooler. They're pretty much Army troopers (As we see in ESB and RotJ) with extra armor and gas masks. I really like the whole kit. The Army troopers we see in the OT are in the cockpits of walkers so it makes sense for these guys to wear more armor.
"Designed to fail" implies some sort of malicious intent. I believe it was just made with cheapness in mind. Not unlike Soviet Russian gear.
if they were just cannon fodder they would be equipped more like the Army troops shown in Solo in the end, compromises have to be made and the GE has to train and equip probably trillions of soldiers, ST armor is probably a decent middle ground between protection, mobility and cost
I appreciate how they're clearly Army infantry and not a Stormtrooper variant—the Mimban Stormtroopers being the Stormtrooper equivalent. I know many people didn't like how WEG had Army infantry and Stormtroopers as 2 separate things, and most authors and gamedevs ignored it (because Stormtroopers are just so much more iconic), but I enjoyed it. Nice Wermacht vs. Waffen SS flavour. Also appreciate how similar in overall concept they are to their Legends equivalent:
I still don't like the Patrol Troopers, but I noticed this nice little detail... Their helmets sure resemble the "Phase 2.5" helmets from TFU. Maybe these troopers were nostalgic?
