AFI's 100 years, 100 movie quotes....NO I AM YOUR FATHER

Well, as I watched the AFI show which listed their desicion for the 100 most famous quotes in movie history, I was amazed to see that, "No, I am your father" did NOT make the top 100! I mean seriously, although it probably can't beat quotes like, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." at number 1, and "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" at number 2, but it really should have at least beaten, "I'm king of the world!" at number 100 from Titanic! I mean, how can I am your father NOT beat that! Although "I am your father" was in the list of the 400 nomminees, is there any one else besides me that think that it should have at least been on the top 100? here is the whole list, just in case people want to see it.

It's one of my favorite quotes of the saga, and I really think it should have made it!!!

 

I watched that whole show waiting for that line - I just assumed it would be in the top 10. That has to be one of the most repeated lines in movie history. Ridiculous that it was not on that list.

 

Yeah, it should have made it but at least "may the Force be with you" made the top 10.

 

I think that "I am your father" is a more popular quote than "may the Force be with you."

I couldn't believe that. It's the biggest twist in movie history and it doesn't even rank in the Top 100?

I usually love AFI lists, being an old movie fan, but that was just wrong.

I was really looking forward to this show and expected both "May the force be with you" and "I am your father" to be on the list. When the second and third quotes came out I assumed that it would be number one because there was no possible way it could be left off the list. Now I just feel that with its absence that the list is completely inaccurate and ridiculously stupid.

MOst everyone who has any interest in movies knows where that line comes from and knows that it implies Vader is the father of Luke. I knew this line before I even watched the saga (which spoiled the twist, but oh well).

 

Yeah, I can't believe it wasn't on the list either!!! The thing with AFI is they think of the quotes that are lesser quotes that can fill out the higher numbers and then they don't have enough space for the must haves. I would have thought "I am your father" is bigger than MTFBWY, but whatever. They didn't even have quotes from really really classic movies like "To kill a mockingbird", "It's a wonderful life" and "Rebel without a cause" but they have soylent green, Titanic and Dirty Dancing? whatever.

Well, I think it's a way to generally add Star Wars to the list without getting specific, since it has such a major movie making influence. But think about it, the quote "I am you father" even ppl who have seen SW may not get out of the blue, but if you say to ppl who haven't seen SW "may the force be with you" at least they will equate it with SW. Plus the twist factor is gone now, so it's no way near as impactful.

I see it more as the biggest movie moment of all time, not so much an important quote.

 

"Soilent Green is people" is a bigger "twist line in the history of cinema". But I was very glad to see "May the force be with you" in the top 100. Remember, 100 is not a lot really. Many of us in an average day make 100 quotes from movies just hanging around the office. Yes, in my list, "I am your father" would be in the top 100, but the AFI list was not for Star Wars fans, but the general public and they were right: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn", "This may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship", "I could have been a contender", etc. do have more resinance with the general public. And I am happy with #8!

I find it highly amusing that a line from the holy, sacred ESB is not on this list. I love ESB but I hate how people use it as a bludgeon against the other SW movies.

 

I was thinking......maybe the reason why "No...I am your father" wasn't picked was because everyone says "Luke, I am your father" Everyone remembers (well not really since its not worded like that in the movie) "Luke, I am your father". You dont hear ppl going around say "No, I am your father." I remember even the commercials when TPM came out they were saying "luke i am your father"

I haven't checked through the list but i'm guessing "scotty beam me up" isn't up there since i've heared that no where in star trek does kirk ever say "scotty beam me up" but somehow the fans started saying it.

So IF the line was "Luke, I am your father" maybe it would be on the list......who knows.

 

Another awards ceremony, and Star Wars gets shut out again. BTW, I have never heard of that "I'm king of the world!" line either, so how famous can it be really? "May the force be with you," could have made it too.

It has seeped into all realms of pop culture and is referred to more than 80% of the quotes listed.

It should DEFINITELY have been in the top 10-probably top 5. That just goes to show how OFF that list is and how inconsequential it is.

 

That is absolutely horrendous that "I am your father" did not make the list. I didn't watch the program, but I fully expected the quote to make number 1. But now you're telling me it didn't even make the top 100! I mean, "May the Force be with you" is good and all, but Vader's famous quote is far more memorable. I guess this just goes to show that the idiots running AFI are, in fact, deranged monkeys.

 

I personally think the line belongs in there.

I mean, I knew the line even before I saw Empire Strikes Back in the 90's. It's been parodied in countless cartoons and comedy shows.

Btw, I always AFI confused with A.F.I. (A Fire Inside, the Band)

 

Take note....It lists the "may the force be with you" quote coming from STAR WARS with no episode name....
As it should be.
