Hello everyone, I require your services.
I have made several small starwars fanfilms with tryout adobe after effects versions. But now I have decided to buy after effects 6.0 standard, and have a question. What is the difference between standard and professional? I am going to use it primarily for greenscreen compositing and rotoscoping. Would buying the standard make any of the above more difficult? Clicky.

While this is for 7.0, they are still similar in regards to function. Professional ships with Keylight for green/bluescreen keying.

Well the professional version of AE has some nice features I wouldn't want to miss when compositing.
It has more keying filters including "keylight" that give you a lot more flexibility when keying. Another powerfull feature is "3d compositing" that lets you move layers in 3d space. This is more advanced than in the standard version and when doing serious compositing I'd say this is a must.

Rotoscoping can be done with masks in both versions so I think there's not much of a difference between both.

Other than that there are a number of features that are worth the professional edition. These include more "blur" filters, 32-bit HDR and 16-bit color space, motion tracking and a number of other filters that will make your life a lot easier during your work.

I think if you want to do mainly lightsaber rotoscoping and some greenscreening then the standard edition will do a fine job. If you want to do serious compositing and effects work you should consider the pro edition.

Well I had found a new AE 6.0 standard on ebay, for $250 which is about the maximum my budget will allow. I really like good compositing equipment, considering my movie is 100% greenscreen. I don't think I'll be able to buy a proffesional version within my present budget. I have to give this some thought.:(

Another big feature missing from the pro version is 2D tracking.

Most of the compositing effects (including spill surpression) are possible in the non-pro ... but it's more difficult because you have to set the channel operations up manually in layers instead of just dropping in a plugin. (Though many people prefer the manual approach to using the plugins anyway :p )

    Have fun.

$250 isn't a terrible rip; I might say that it's just about right for outdated software, perhaps slightly underpriced. If you look for lower than that, you're going to get ripped off; scams are common for software that expensive, especially on eBay.
