Man, if Fox has even a quarter of say in the eventual Classic Trilogy DVDs, we're in for a GREAT time.

For those who don't know, Fox is planning to rerelease the four "Alien" films as a 9-disc set later this year. Each film gets two discs (a film disc and an extras disc), with all four directors (Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Jean Pierre Jeunot) providing audio commentaries (as well as Sigourney Weaver, of course), and all four will have (seamless branching) director's cuts. The ninth disc will be all extras, including the "Alien Legacy" documentary you had to mail for in the previous set. Also the "Alien Evolution" documentary from British TV, and tons of stuff from the Dark Horse comics series.

In cyberspace, EVERYONE can hear you scream...

I dont think Alien will be a Directors Cut...Aliens will now include both versions...and Alien3 and Alien Resurrection will both have new cuts...Alien 3 is rumored to be around 2hr.50min. which is excellent...I love that film...I had not heard of Weaver providing commentary...and I wouldnt bet a lot on Fincher doing a commentary on Alien3...Scott already provided a commentary for the current DVD...so they will likely just recycle that one...I will have to wait for a press release to see all the extras...if all of the extras on the current discs are on this set...then I will most certainly sell my Alien Legacy set...

I believe this info is incorrect: and all four will have (seamless branching) director's cuts.

digitalbits got that info from Empire magazine, which I believe picked it up from the internet. This had been rumored more than a month ago, but Fox shot it down, saying that only Aliens would have an alternate cut.

I heard, although I'm not sure, that Alien3 will have a different cut, but since Fincher wouldn't get involved, it's basically the studio's best guess at what his director's cut would've been. Or something.

Prior to this I only knew of Aliens (The current disc is the Directors Cut) and Alien3 having directors cuts...I never heard of Scott going back to Alien (Which I dont think he should...its perfection!)...or Alien Resurrection...

No amount of re-editing will save that movie. It is destined to suck.

This hasn't been confirmed by FOX yet.
Here is an IGN article about it:
    No New Alien Quadriolgy Details
Two-month-old information is now hitting magazines.

April 04, 2003 - Readers of Empire magazine in the UK will find something interesting in their rumor column that states all sorts of details about Fox's upcoming Alien Quadrilogy. While this is the first time the information has been printed, the reality is it hit the 'net back in February, and originated on Canadian retailer DV-Depot's customer service message board. Most people at the time dismissed it as false rumors.

Here's the original information that hit the 'net back in February:

"Alien: will include 14 deleted scenes for a total of 15
    more minutes of the movie.

Aliens: will allow viewers to choose between the Theatrical version, which has never been available on DVD before, and the Cameron, Director's cut

Alien 3: will include David Fincher's 2 hr. 50 min original version of the movie, which has never been released.

Alien Resurrection: will feature an alternate opening and ending (crash on Earth).

And for the 9th bonus disc, which will include over 3 hours of material:

Alien Legacy - Was a free mail-in offer
    Alien Evolution - BBC Documentary
    Darkhorse Alien Comics
    Darkhorse Alien vs. Predator
Complete Laser Disc features - so can throw away laser discs and have everything imaginable in this boxset
    DVD-ROM

    September 2003
Remember all DVD contents/extras and release date is subject to change "

Or original report on this can be found here. Fox has yet to officially confirm any of the details in the time since they originally leaked out, and apparently some of the stuff is actually still in negotiations (commentary, etc.). As usual, we'll keep you posted as things develop.

I hope it is true and if so I wish FOX would confirm it so I know not to buy the 5 disc set that's out now.

Alien 3: will include David Fincher's 2 hr. 50 min original version of the movie, which has never been released.

Okay, if that's true, then I will buy this, the piece of crap 4th movie be damned. I would love to see what FIncher did with Alien3 before the studio turned it into an average movie.

This is great news for Sci-Fi Fandom, however, in a personal sense, I am angry!

The reason why... I have already bought the original box set, spending over $100 Australian dollars.

It's *actually* supposed to be...woops, looks like someone else has already brought up the word "Tetralogy." :D

Between this set, the Indiana Jones set, the four-disc Two Towers edition, and the third season of Babylon 5, November's shaping up to be one damned expensive month. But I ain't complainin' one bit.

Well, I am glad that the original cut for Alien 3 is going to finally see the light of day. I seriously doubt anything can help Resurrection. Now I know what to get for Christmas. B5 and Indy are on the top of my list. Others can wait.

I'm a really hardcore Alien fanatic (anyone been to the 'Aliens Online Encyclopedia' website before it was closed down? I made that site).
I might as well post IGN's statistics for the "Alien Good Edition DVD set". ;)

Back in March of 2001, IGN made up a fictional Alien DVD boxed set, part of their "Good Edition" line of fictional DVD releases. This boxed set was the ULTIMATE Alien film DVD set, and the author of the fictional news article did extensive and exhaustive research to come up with every appropriate documentary or featurette he could find... along with a bunch of fictional ones.

And then the Alien "Good Edition" specs fell off their site. Searching IGN.com provides no results for the Good Edition specs.

    Well, I found them again:

Disclaimer - this boxed set is fictional, made up by IGN back in March of 2001.

    Part One: Alien (1979)

In space, no one can hear you scream...

OK, quit your bellyaching. Yes, I know there is already DVD Special Editions for these films that are among the most beloved

of all time. And people would have you believe that it is these released issued in conjunction of The Alien Legacy gift set

are the end all be all in DVD entertainment.

But they're not. Hell, they don't even crack the surface in most areas.

As per usual with this recurring column, there is a lot that SHOULD have been included with these releases. Sure, the

pictures included are cleaner then any of the films have ever been seen before and anamorphic to boot. And of course they're

    in 5.1 Dolby Digital.

It's the extras I'm upset about. Or more specifically the lack there of. And while it may have been early in their product

line, this is 20th Century Fox where talking about here.

And these films deserve the 2 disc 5 Star treatment.

    ALIEN: 5 STAR COLLECTION
    Disc One:

    - 16x9 enhanced 2.35:1 anamorphic high-definition film to video transfer of the original 116-minute theatrical cut.

    - 5.1 Dolby Digital

    - Audio Commentary with director Ridley Scott, editor Terry Rawlings, and Alien creature designer H.R. Giger

    - Audio Commentary with franchise executive producers Gordon Carroll, David Giler and Walter Hill.

    - Audio Commentary with writers Dan O' Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

    - Audio Commentary with actors Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto, Ian Holm, Veronica Cartwright, Harry

    Dean Stanton, and John Hurt.

    - Isolated Score with audio commentary from composer Jerry Goldsmith

    Disc Two

    - "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream" a new feature length retrospective documentary chronicling the film's

journey from concept to the screen with all new interviews with the production's key personnel including all listed above and

others like concept artists Ron Cobb and Jean "Moebius" Giraud, publicity consultant Charles Lippincott, and Alien performer

    Bolaji Bodejo.

    - "Giger's Alien" the rarely seen vintage documentary of Alien creator Hans Rudi Giger and his creation of the

film's title menace and it's world. Features period interviews with several key cast and crew members.

    - "The AILEN Legacy" the infamous 20th anniversary retrospective documentary that was the hard to find fifth disc

in the original Alien Legacy DVD boxed set. Produced by Sharpline Arts, the documentary features up to date interviews with

    the cast and crew.

    - "Designing Better Worlds" a new retrospective documentary focusing on the creation of the film's ship Nostromo

and the technology contained featuring interviews with writer and special effects supervisor Dan O' Bannon and concept

artists Ron Cobb and Jean "Moebius" Giraud.

    - "Jones: You Stupid Cat" a new retrospective featurette on the trainers and handlers of filmdom's premiere feline

    co-star.

    - "Kenner's Alien" a new retrospective featurette on the hysteria and controversy surrounding the infamous 18 inch

    action fig

That would be a most amazing and awesome box set, Syntax! I only wish it could exist like that.

However, it looks like this new set will include at least some of that wonderful Alien goodness that you fictionally compiled. I must say that I was rather disappointed at the lack of special features when I bought the Alien Legacy set. The first disc was great and I enjoyed what extras were on the others, but Alien 3 and Resurrection only had the trailers.

Hopefully this Quadrilogy (no marginally educated person knows what a tetraology is, only those who paid attention in math know words like that) will be much more satisfying...if I can convince my better half to make the purchase.
