I'm guessing this has been discussed, like always lock and redirect. I was watching ROTS last night when I wondered, what would've happened if Anakin stayed in the council chambers like Mace told him to?

Theres so many possibilites. Would Mace have been killed? Palpataine? Would Anakin have been finally made a master ["If what you told me is true, you will have gained my trust."-Mace Windu] Would the jedi be viewed as corrupt for arresting/killing a politician?

Strilo edit: Actually we do have a What If thread that would be perfect for this. Check it out here.

I don't know what others think, but, to me, Palpatine was carefully reading Anakin from the moment he met him in Phantom Menace. Obviously, Palpatine was gambling to turn Anakin, he was probably pretty sure Anakin would turn, even if it seemed unlikely to the Jedi (which it didn't, just listen to Mace / Yoda / Obi-Wan talk).

If, maybe, Padme had shown up at the Jedi chambers after Palpatine and Mace started fighting and stopped Anakin at the last minute from leaving the chambers, then probably Mace and Palpatine would tear apart the office fighting and Mace would squeak out a win. The battle would be way more epic than what we saw in RotS, it'd be closer to the Yoda-Palps dual. Oo, and Mace would be temporarily blinded in the fight, he'd end up with a cool, permanent scar across his eyes. Ah, scratch that last bit, it's over the top.
