Yeah, we all knew it was coming, and yeah he was evil for a long time, but still. He redeemed himself and sacrificed himself to save his son, but you watch all six in order, it's kinda sad when he dies, even though we know he joins the Force and comes back as a ghost. He goes through all this pain and loss to find some love and respect, and dies when he gets it.

Well, ultimately the movies are all about Anakin - from the beginning he starts his training as a Jedi, to his death.

It is pretty sad, but remember Yoda's words - death is a part of life. His death is ultimately a good thing. He ensured the defeat of the Sith, and gave hope for the Jedi Order by saving his son.

His death is sad...but, he finds happiness within. Anakin's tale does not end with his death, it ends a scene later, when he appears as a Force ghost, standing next to Yoda and Obi-Wan. He has finally found peace, and gotten the forgiveness of those that had the most to hate him for. His tale ultimately has a happy ending, not a sad one.

I was always really depressed whenever I watched Darth Vader/ Anakin die as a child. It was heartbreaking to think for the better half of his life he always felt under pressure and scared of losing the people he loves, then that makes him a monster for the other half of his life. He finally smartens up and gives up his life for his son, only to die in his arms once the two were at peace with eachother.

But it is better he died redeeming himself then still being a Sith Lord.

yeah, I tear up every time I read Star by St- oh, wait... Skywalker :p

It's bittersweet more than downright sad, isn't it? Sure, he dies, but he dies saving his son after a life of mistakes and evil. He's at peace. Oh yeah, and if he lived, he'd still be a limbless crisp in armor (which they would have to replace - no picture of White Infinities Vader plz [face_sick]). So yeah, all things considered it's a good death.

It's a very sad scene, though. Freakin Imperial March on a harp :_|

I didn't find it sad because of the force ghost scene. He seemed much happier there than I would imagine he could have been if he'd lived - facing criminal tribunals, dealing with Leia, the gallaxy hating him (both the good side and the bad side), and still missing his limbs, sitting in some jail cell with a breathalizer cuz they'd taken his suit away. That just sounds like torture to me. So no, I can't say I was sad. It was a great ending, he got to go off and be with his buddies in the Netherworld. I figure it is a whole new galaxy where they become flesh once more (i.e., they are only ghosts in the old galaxy).

Though I find the scene to be well done, I've never been fully convinced that one act of good (even it it's saving Luke) should have redeemed Anakin, considering all the evil things he did while being Darth Vader.

But he saved the universe from Palpatine and allowed the Empire to fall, denounced what he stood for and gave his LIFE to save his son. No Sith would ever do that. To give your life for your family and friends, for the right thing even, is the greatest act of honor and love to be imagined.

Yeah, he did some very despicable things as Vader, but even in ROTS, I think he was questioning it himself, even CRYING after killing the CIS leaders. Anakin was always trying to break out from Vader, IMO. He could have let Boba Fett fry Chewbacca and C-3PO, but didn't. He could have killed Piett at the end of ESB for losing the Millenium Falcon, but didn't. He could have killed Luke when he refused to turn, but didn't. He had numerous chances to kill Leia, but didn't, even going against Tarkin's wishes for her to be executed IMMEDIATELY. It was Vader who gave 3PO back to Chewbacca in the prison to be repaired.

If anything, I'd say Vader, while the enforcer and was doing these tasks, part of the time he was questioning it and loathing himself.

If anything, I'd say Tarkin was more ruthless, perhaps just behind Palpatine, even.

I nearly cried at the end of Return Of The Jedi. ;) It was sad. Anakin was redeemed, galaxy was entering better times and was free once again, but he couldn't live to see such happy times.

Despite Vader doing the great thing in saving Luke via getting rid of Palpatine, isn't it still a bit odd karma wise that he gets redeemed? What kind of threshold do the Jedi/the good side of The Force have anyway? :p

It wasn't just the single act of throwing Palpy down the shaft; it was the rejection of the Dark side altogether.

This is one of the saddest quotes in the saga, if you ask me. Darth Vader didn't want to die a monster, hated by his daughter. I wonder if he knew it was Leia, I mean how else would he just know about Luke having a sister unless he saw an image from his mind.

Yeah, he probably knew it was her. later in the expanded universe Anakin's force-ghost tries to make peace with her.
I think in Return of the Jedi he knows at last the identities of both of his children and he understands the wrings he caused them (especially to Leia, by blowing up whole Alderaan) and is obviously really sorry about that. So his last sentence serves as an atempt of redemption and ask of forgivness from both twins. What makes it really really sad in the end.

Anakin's death does make me a bit sab at times, but the Force(Yoda, and Obi Wan) decided that Anakin has lived in hell for the past 20 or so years and let him become a Force Ghost.

I don't think they let him become a Force-ghost. He did it himself. If anyone would ahve helped him, then it was probably Qui-Gon himself.

Although it was a selfless act that Vader did by killing the Emperor, what did he really have to live for? The Emperor had betrayed him, was going to kill his son... so even if he let Luke die and lived to tell about it, he was now humbled by the fact that he was not worth very much to the Emperor. Which he probably knew all along, but hadn't had confirmation until then. So I see his act as one part redemption and one part his only logical alternative.

I've always felt sad when Anakin dies, he's just come back from the dark side and he dies by his son.

I remember a few opposing things that said otherwise, but I guess that has been changed over time. He didn't learn how to do it, but since he was pretty much a force demi-god, I guess he ghosted automatically.

When? If it was something that could be learned post-mortum, Obi-Wan and Yoda wouldn't have needed to learn it until after they died, and Yoda's line in ROTS about Obi-Wan having further training to do is meaningless.

If you aren't disagreeing, how can you explain Anakin being able to do it without it being something he can naturally do as the Chosen One? Yoda's line implies it must be learned prior to death, thus explaining himself and Obi-Wan. Yet Anakin never had a chance to learn the technique from either Yoda or Obi-Wan, and still manages it. The only plausible reason I can come up with requires Anakin to just be able to do it, just because he can. (maybe like how some savants can hear a tune once, and be able to replay it on the piano note for note, they can't explain how they do it, all they know is that they just can). So, I guess, I am confused. How can you state that he was taught the ability by Yoda and Obi-Wan, at the same time agree that it must be something taught prior to death, even though Anakin didn't have time to learn it from them prior to his death? Its a contradiction. It must be taught prior to death, Anakin didn't learn it prior to death, yet, there he is. Anakin must be somehow different from all other Force users in that he, and he alone, didn't need to learn it, it came naturally.
