Why do people crave breasts in America, even though the only thing censored is the nipple now, why do we bother censoring, how did the addiction come about?

If anyone has soem insight, please provide it, breasts have become sexual and taboo in America, and it doesn't make a bit of sense.

As I posted using breasts as an example of how any taboo comes about, as seen here,

Cencorship of anything promotes a person's curiosity about it. If you censor something, the best example in American society would be breasts, people become absolutely fascinated by it. They stare, they sneak peeks, and somtimes it becomes sexual and even to the point 0f being a fetish. So you get a generation thinking something naughty and censoring it, it becomes taboo, and they teach their kids its naughty and they get curious and it forms a vicious cycle until the point of breaking where it gets so rediculous that a generation, more realisticly a few people in a generation, and in growing numbers with each new generation, get fed up with it and beat some sense into the world. The reason I used breasts as an example is because they have become an ultimate taboo in America, it is now at the breaking point, bikinis have become so small that it is not the breast in intself anymore that is taboo, but the nipple(also only the nipple is blurred now in tv), soon the vicious cycle will be broken, pay attention in the next 10 or 20 years and you will see it(or rather them wink ).

the problem lies with parents and the government takin care of censorship. I was hesitant to startthis subject because it will probably locked for lack of arguments, although I would appreciate it if the mods would let some start before locking it up.

Any insight about the problem, any arguments welcome, but lets get to the root of the american breast addiction.

Well, I wouldn't say it is simply American.

If you recall, corsets and such came from Europe.

Cencorship of anything promotes a person's curiosity about it.

To echo Jediflyer's observation, the above argument is more than just an American concept: even so, censorship occurs at different levels for different cultures.

This addresses a larger issue of censorship. Anything from illegal drugs to bleeps on Jerry Springer would apply. As an answer, I can only offer the natural human/animal curiousity. Gossip is similar in motivation. The rags at the grocery store, E-network, Dateline expose. The list goes on.

Breasts are unique in a way. Naturally, people want privacy as well. Others actually don't want to see wardrobe malfuntions. If we could allow those that desire to bare their bodies to do so, while allowing people that don't want to know to remain ignorant, then there wouldn't be a problem.

Until the world can turn off such things like Google can do with safe-search, error on the side of the prude is the best option.

As for "why just the nipple?" That is a hanging-chad mystery.

I was hoping this was going to go a different direction. I for one am confused by how the message got out to women (and some are stupid enough to fall for it) that larger is better? These surgeries to increase the breast size is ridiculous. I am a large breasted woman so I know that it is not what it is cracked up to be. Forget those wimpy sports bras for working out they are worthless. I would love to go running and have my chest be completed with the workout at the same time the rest of my body is. Is this just a case of the grass being greener? I have seen naked breasts that have implants and they are not fooling anyone. They are fake! I want girls/women to be happier with they way they are and not resorting to painful and expensive surgeries to "fix" them. If they are relying on a surgeon to make them happy then they are seeking the wrong type of professional. So men out there love your women the way they are. Encourage them to make healthy choices and not surgical ones. And for the female population a friendly reminder that gravity always wins and the larger they are the greater the pull. :)

JediTre11 If everyone who wanted to be naked could be naked everyone would soon be naked, and the prudes wouldlose. Small children(and sometimes older children) Naturally want to go around naked. Its more comfortable(in general, don't go into cold climate and breast size etc). But what we're trying to get to here is ow the breast addiction in Aerica got started, we are the most prudy western country, throughout most of Europe there are nude beaches, and some places women cna walk top-free, but in america we have discovered an 11th commandment(thou shalt be ashamed of thy natural anatomy) and have turned breasts into sex objects. Sure right now its due to censorship, but how did it come about?

I disagree that America has a "breast addiction." I think what we have is an eroticism addiction; or perhaps "we are obsessed with sex in our culture."

It just so happens that the breast is associated with sex in our culture. So what I want to know is "why is the breast associated with sex?" The answer is probably akin to one of master_hard_bread's points: because it is taboo to show them at any other time but during sexual encounters.

Its like if you ring a bell everytime you feed a dog the dog associates the bell will being fed and drools whenever you ring the bell.

The same is true of breasts. If everytime you see a breast you are in a sexual situation, then you will see breasts as sexual.

I don't know if it's cultural or not. I'd say heterosexual men are hard-wired to be sexually aroused by women's breasts. And don't forget that breasts are sensitive to the touch and can be part of sexual arousal for women as well as men.

Even if only "cultural" the association of large breasts with fertility is at the very least tens of thousands of years old (Venus of Willendorf). There's no disconnecting the concept of "fertility" from the concept of sex. It's naive to think that the only "natural" connection between men and women's breasts is through infant breastfeeding.

While I like breasts, abs and butt figure more into my sexiness rating.

Keira Knightly is a great example:

    [image=http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/socialdiary/2005/09_23_05/images/new/keira_knightly.jpg]

Not much breast, but some really nice abs.

But more on subject, I agree with Jabba's post.

P.S. I think we should have more Senate topics that lend themselves to these kinds of pictures...

I don't understand the obsession either, to be honest. I have my own breasts. They're nice to have, I guess, but it's not a big deal. Maybe that's part of why it's usually men that like them so much - most women have their own and they're not that special anymore. In America, men don't often get casual looks, so the rarity of the experience increases its value (and the sexual association as was mentioned by others.)

Not true, in tribes they are always exposed and are not treated sexually, in families where children grew up seeing breasts all the time they are not considered sexual. We are not hard wired to think of them as sex objects, they're for feeding babies and thats it. We see them as sex objects due to conditioning by society.

While I agree with you that it's possible (and quite easy) for a culture to desensitize the sexuality of breasts, I disagree that "they're for feeding babies and that's it." Biologically speaking, nipples have sensitive nerve endings and link up with the pleasure centers of the brain, maybe not to the same extent as other anatomical parts (how explicit am I allowed to be on this forum?). That distinguishes them from the back of the neck or toes as a potential focus for foreplay in sexual intercourse.

Also, psychologists might suggest that the male "memory" of breastfeeding lingers into adulthood and contributes to breast fixations as an object for sexual desire.

I'd add to that the idea that the invention of clothing, in general, had the natural tendency to sexualize the body as a whole. Clothing, I would say, sexualized sex itself. Clothing creates a barrier to sex. It enhances the allure of the body by concealing flaws and emphasizing assets. Frankly, most people look better with their clothes on than their clothes off. Breasts are more sexually alluring when covered. Modesty developed as an afterthought to the invention of clothing. Modesty is really all about promoting the sexualization of the human body. Modesty uses clothing to introduce the possibility of seduction. Clothing allowed the invention of seduction too, since seduction is more or less defined as "getting someone out of his/her clothes."

Yeah, but I think those nerve endings formed there because of nursing. For some women can be rather painful and if a baby starts to teeth... there can be some real damage. To enjoy it would mean women would nurse more (or be less hesitant to nurse). Also if the baby starts chomping to the point where the breast could get hurt, having a very sensitive breast might give some advanced warning and save the nipple before it's too late.

If you look at it from an evolution standpoint and that that into account, women who somehow enjoyed the process and could better feel if something was going wrong would do it more and have healthier babies, women who didn't wouldn't nurse as much and would have babies with less of a chance to survive. As such, biologically it has become somewhat pleasurable for most women to nurse.

But than again, from this POV breasts are not there for any particular reason. They are what they are and they can be used in various ways.

America has a sex addiction because this country was founded by prudes. By church indoctrination, since birth pretty much, we're taught that sex is dirty (yes, even Protestants do that).

Can I ask what is so dirty about sex? It's how we propogate the species, and has been since before the dog was domesiticized. What is so wrong about something that's completely natural? The only answer is that 'gratuitive sex' is wrong. Then again though, sex is not just for reproduction (seeing that we are hardwired to enjoy sex), so then again, that argument is wrong to me. I don't get it.

This ties in with my opinion on breasts, because much of pop culture has turned the breast into a sex symbol because of breast implants and the celebrity images of women. No offense, but big fake breasts are not that attractive. In fact, the last time I saw a woman with big fake implants, I nearly vomitted (too bad too, cause I really enjoy Las Vegas). There is no reason for women who are petite to have DD breasts. It doesn't fit with a sense of proportion. There is no reason for it. (Don't get me started on Dr. 90210 or the porn industry...)

I've said my piece. Can't say any more, or the blood will get riled, and I won't be able to take my afternoon nap with the kids.

Well, not to upset anyone whos religious, but the whole issue surrounding guilt and sin, is that this used to be the great way of controlling the masses, IMO. They wanted their members to do as they was told and the best way was through guilt. Thats why even at a very young age, children were subjected to stories about going to hell if they sinned and didn't repent.

As for the Breast addiction? I don't know. I'm sure psychotherapists would say it mainly goes back to the males Mother and childhood and breatfeeding, and all of that stuff?

It goes far deeper than that, I'd do some research but I'm really busy with schoolwork lately. What this thread is for is not to discuss the now, well not at the moment, it is for discussing how the breast addiction started, how they became sexualized, and why. Something in my gut tells me the reason will end up being the bible.

As for mothers enjoying breastfeeding, you're absolutely right, after the nipples adjust to the baby feeding, most mothers think it is the most wonderful thing in the world. A note on breastfeeding, it is much better for the baby than bottle feeding. Weaning is also harmful to the child psychologically. Usually they completely self wean by age four or five, but sometimes as late as seven, and sometimes earlier, but it has been shown that children who were breastfeed even up till 6 months had a 50% less chance of dying as an infant. There are also many other benefits but that ould take too long and be too distracting from the point of the thread.

Ayway, someone feel free to actually do soem research and stop discussing what's going on right now(until we find the root, then this thread will become a discussion of the now).

I'm not personally obsesed with breats myself. I value the whole body. ;)

America's breast addiction is probably partly biological partly because of censorship, like you said. And of course, America is more hung up on sex anyway...either censoring it or desiring it. America seems to be a little more crass on that issue.
