I was watching AOTC with my wife (again) and she was jabbing at it playfully as she usually does (she likes it though.) This particular night she was entranced with Amidala's clothing choices. It was interesting to hear a woman's perspective, as most of my fellow fan friends are male. Here were her insights...

    1) The funeral scene: Amidala wore white, and without a bra, to her good friends' mothers' funeral.

    2) Palpatine's apartment: just after an attempt on her life, as well as watching her friend and loyal decoy die before her, Amidala thought her straight hair was too plain for an urgent political meeting and attempted to emulate an African American hair quality, complete with other African adornments and accessories.

    3) Amidala's Parents' house: Amidala, to self "Time to go see dad! Time to expose the entire area between my breasts and my pelvic line!"

She then Jested that even though Ani and Padme were together for days, most of Anakin's time was probably spent wondering what was taking her so long. All dialogue between them in the film represents every moment they spent together between Padme's wardrobe changes.

That's royalty (ex-royalty, I guess) for you. Pomp and circumstance before practicality.

    1. Maybe the white outfit was the only one she had left that was clean, and she thought wearing something clean would be more respectful than wearing something of dark color that had an odor.

    3. :D That was great; thank you kindly for the laugh.

    I LOVED Padme's wardrobe.

Oh, and I'm sick of hearing about how Padme wasn't wearing a bra with the white top. Yes, she was-if you look at some of the high res images, you'll realize it's actually the shirt seams.

    >African American hair quality

I'm pretty sure African Africans have hair like that too. ;)

The fashion technology of the Star Wars universe is far superior to our own, so all that wardrobe stuff might not have taken too long.

If I lived in the SW universe, I'd probably dress like Padme too. Hell, I may do so already-I got the picnic dress pattern from Simplicity and I'm dying to take a stab at it.

Actually in some historical cultures white used to be the colour of mourning used during funeral ceremonies.

The only thing about her wardrobe that I had a problem with was the corset thing she wore at dinner and afterwards, I just thought bad choice! I thought it was nice to see a side to Padme which wasn't just a politicion but a person a woman and even though I thought for the context of the movie her telling Anakin she couldn't be together while wearing these outfits kinda contradicted itself I thought on the whole it wasn't so bad. I just wondered how many outfits she wore because Anakin had like two in the whole movie and she had suitcases

...even though I thought for the context of the movie her telling Anakin she couldn't be together while wearing these outfits kinda contradicted itself....

That's kinda the point. Padmé's choice in revealing and sensual outfits points to her subconscious desire to be with Anakin. It's her superego that gets in the way and causes her to ignite her politician-speak psychological defense. She wants to be with Anakin, but being who they are and knowing how their society will react to it, she worries about the judgement they'll get from others if they did pursue a relationship. It is then that she stands up and pulls on her Senator persona and starts speaking to Anakin like she's giving a speech in the Senate; it's a defensive mechanism. But there still are those outfit choices that reveals her true feelings. It's not that it was some thoughtless contradiction GL ignorantly wrote into the movie; it was purposeful!

That's the first time I've ever heard the word 'superego' used in relation to Star Wars. Not that it doesn't make sense, mind you.

I think the only problems with any of the outfits would have been logistical. Case in point: eating while wearing a corset. No wonder the food was CG. Spaceships screaming through space, piloted by people with telekenetic powers, I can buy. A corset for a full dinner? That's pushing it.

Isn't it convenient that the one time she has to run and be agile is when she wears the one thing that doesn't weigh more then she does? And she wears it before she knows she going into danger?

I wasn't thinking about something either Sinbad or Martin Lawrence said in a monolouge. Something about how if he was a guy in a movie, he make sure the girlfriend would trip and fall if Dracula or some monster was after them.

Padme, in one of her cumbersome dresses: Look out, it's Count Dooku!
    Anakin: I'm out of here.
Count Dooku: Waa Haa Haa Haa!]
Padme: Wait for me, Annie! Come back and save me, I'm triping all over my clothing!
    Anakin: I'm out of here.
Count Dooku: Waa Haa Haa Haa!
Padme: Annie! I can't run because my cloths are too heavy! Ekk! Dooku caught me!
Anakin: You're on you own, toots.

Looking at some of her outfits she must have one big subconcious, I like her clothes because they show progression from Queen to senator.

Um, if worn properly, corsets should NOT be uncomfortable, or prevent one from eating.

That being said, if I ever made that one, I'd make it out of silk instead of leather, because leather's hard to work with and damn uncomfortable.

Padme's erm...."characteristics" were from the seams of her shirt?

You've now ruined the scene for me, thanks. :(

Actually, I don't think she was planning on attending a funeral. ;)

Maybe she's compensating for something? It's not like she needs a bra. Hell, her spaceship was just like a huge Ferrari. ;)

No wonder her kids don't remember her. [face_mischief]

Padme: "Don't look at me like that"
    Anakin: "Why not?"
Padme: "It makes me feel uncomfortable".....

..."BUT, I'm going to shove my cleavage and belly button in your face whenever I get a chance...but DON'T look at me that way"

    Um, yeah whatever...LOL

Some of her outfits in AOTC were absolutely beautiful (I particularly like the Tatooine embroidered blue tunic thingie and her Palpatine's office dress). Some of the other outfits were purely ridiculous in my opinion, particularly her "going home" dress from the deleted scenes.

Mind you this is only my opinion.

I thought her outfits were a lot better, and more human-looking than in TPM. But I wouldn't be caught dead in that thing she wore in the "Are you allowed to love?..." scene. That was just plain hideous! My favorite would have to be from the delete scene with her family. That was awesome!

I liked the tatooine dress and the parents dress but hated the corset dress, in my opinion the peice of material hanging down her front should have been down her back and it just didn't fit into the context of the scene at least for me. The going home dress was pretty but I wouldn't wear it if I were going home to see my parents

Maybe the SW universe doesn't have America's needlessly Puritanical views on sex....ever think of that?

Maybe exposing one's midriff is not viewed as wrong or scandalous.

I think Pamde-as-clothes-horse could have been great for a joke or two, but Lucas seems to never really expressly bring it up, except in that one moment where Obi-Wan says they could use her clothes to barter with on Tatooine. Could have been a couple funny moments there...alas, wasted.

The big issue for me is when she goes to Palpatine's office she has changed her outfit. It would of been much better if she was still in the pilots uniform because it would add a sense of urgency, that she came to the office right after the bombing, instead of stopping to pick out a pretty dress when her friend Corde and several other were just burned to a crisp.

"That's kinda the point. Padmé's choice in revealing and sensual outfits points to her subconscious desire to be with Anakin. It's her superego that gets in the way and causes her to ignite her politician-speak psychological defense."

So in other words GL is saying that if a hot girl wears skimpy clothes, then if she tells a guy "no" she really means "yes".

Wonderful message for the kids George :p

So all you creepy and socially inept guys persist persist persist because she's just playing hard to get. Galk all you want, do as much learing as you can, its not stalking its destiny. :p :p :p

Some people say that thing is suppose to be symbolic of Vader, I dunno if that makes any sense, but I read a thread in here once where someone suggested that. Like when he chokes the guy in ANH
