Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi both lost their usual lightsabers before the big battle on Geonosis, requiring them to each borrow a lightsaber from two of the fellow Jedi who came to rescue them. Was it customary for some Jedi to carry extra lightsabers on them, or did these two Jedi come prepared with spare lightsabers specifically for Anakin and Obi-Wan to use?

jedi only carry one lightsaber: their own. but good question though, i guess they must have had extras, but who knows? we never saw them after that scene, so its possible that they made a unwise move.

Well, the way I look at it, I think the Jedi reasoned that since they were captured, they would need lightsabers. Another question, though, is how did they know they were captured?

Well, I'm sure not going to start a thread on it. There's too many of those kinds of threads already.

I can believe that one hundred Jedi going into battle might have the foresight to bring along a few spares. Seems practical to me.

sabers arnt just random weapons kept in an armory. they are very personal, and built and owned by individual jedi.

Well, I'm sure not going to start a thread on it.

    you may not... but [face_mischief]

The Jedi knew that Obi-Wan had been captured because during his last transmission to them from Geonosis, he was seen being confronted by a battle droid. They might have figured that he would have been disarmed by his captors. What they didn't know, however, was that Anakin was also there...and similarly disarmed and taken captive.

Yes, fosh, a Jedi's weapon is a personal item, but if you're going to take things that literally...

...when you're watching a film and a character says he is 'starving' do you expect to see his ribs sticking out?

In the case of Obi Wan and Anakin:
Both their lightsabres were confiscated by Dooku's men. They got their so-called 'spares' from the jedi who Mace led into the arena.
If you watch the scene closely, you will see one or two jedi tossing extra weapons to both Anakin and his Master.

You'll also see that there is at least one Jedi in the arena fighting with two lightsabers.

In a more literary sense, I think that they are a metaphor for the fact that they are fighting with "borrowed" weapons, in the same way that the Jedi are fighting with a "borrowed" clone army. But I could be reading too much into that...

Dont know where the throwback lightsabers came from but AOTC has a running theme that says the saber isnt as sacred as you thought it was. I cant help picturing some big factory like machine pump'n out sabers on an assembly line.

Just when I fall in love with the fact that Annies saber is evolving into the OT sabers, he breaks it. They take Obi's and gives him and Annie some throwbacks. And if you look at the hilts they are almost void of any distinction. Just a silver cylinder with two red buttons. Factory?

Annie is tossed Obi's green throwback saber where he duels with both of them for all of three seconds before one is destroyed. A scene pushed on all of us threw advertising that implied a kickarse display of double-saber wielding. Man, that was cold, Lucas.

But there is redemption to all this. But I cant point it out here because itd be considered a spoiler :(

Would it be too unreasonable for there to be both the cherished and personal lightsabers built by each individual Jedi as well as some generic extra sabers kept for emergency uses?

With the lightsaber being such an important part of a Jedi's life, it doesn't seem unreasonable to assume that the Jedi do indeed have spares. While most Jedi probably don't carry more than one on their person at a time, I imagine if you are bringing a ton of Jedi to a dangerous world on a rescue mission, you bring everything but the kitchen sink, including some spare sabers, just in case.

Obviously not all sabers are built personally. You don't think that the younglings built the sabers they are using, do you?

The lightsaber is a very personal weapon, indeed, but I don't see why that makes it unlikely that some Jedi may have constructed more than one. Is it forbidden for a Jedi Knight to fight with more than one weapon? I think that before all of the troubles started for the Jedi, one was enough for peacekeeping. It's clear that many have practiced wielding two blades, so I can't imagine it's frowned upon.

I like to imagine the Order keeps a collection of lightsabres from Jedi who have fallen in the line of duty, and those two tossed to Anakin and Obi-Wan were from there.

In the Geonosis battle, some of the Jedi fought with 2 sabers. So it's entirely conceivable that those Jedi with 2 sabers gave them to Obi and Ani.

    Got it, sorry.

Actually what Vacantlook said is the only reasonable way to look at it or imagine it. Personal sabers and also some throwbacks. It lends itself more toward guns than swords though. There are amillion guns then theres the cowboy with his own special stylized double revolvers. If I were told that Samarai swords are sometimes made in bulk and not always in personal tradition, it would make the throwback sabers more acceptable. But even then, those swords are carefully made too, and the sword chooses the user there not just tossed around. Oh well, Its space. Makes me shutter but I guess throwbacks work as good as personal ones. Or maybe there off, like cheep poolsticks in a pool hall as apposed to the guy who brings his with the fancy desighns. I can go on forever...

I'm sure the "Spare" Lightsabers aren't just Factory Stamped out, But Rather Lightsabers from the Archives Armory. Lightsabers of Past Jedi...

    What Vacantlook said.

Plus, maybe they have spares lying around especially for Jedi who lose their's, or perhaps SOME Jedi, as they get older, decide to make new lightsabers, or whatever.

I mean, the Jedi may be annoying in some ways, but they aren't completely brain dead.
